Artemis: The Ships Bridge Simulator - call for crew!

Yeah, but does the science officer need to get naked all the time? Because...from the voices I heard over vent...no one wants that.

They were already naked.

I don't know about need....

But if the communications officer does a fan-dance I expect video.

This is a little last minute, but NSMike, drdoak and I are putting together a crew at our place this Friday. If you happen to be within driving distance of Akron, OH you're more than welcome.

PM me for details.

Oh, and we will have a projector, and the sound will be powered with near-audiophile-quality home theater speakers and a dual-driver aluminum-cone 10" subwoofer. You won't NEED to fake the shaking when the ship is hit.

Oh, yeah. That deserves to be mentioned.

Now if only you can hook it up so those of us that can't make it can join in over the internet.

As much of a good idea as this seems, after having seen it in action, I can see Artemis being pretty soulless without the same-room interactions.

I'd actually *love* to see a 19th century naval version of Artemis - yelling out 'hoist the mainsail!' would be so much more satisfying than 'set phasers to frequency A'

Or a WW2 submarine version.

I would play that.

I think the real hurdle is that pretty much every nerd knows what a phaser does, but only very specific nerds can understand this:

I'd imagine that if a real Star Trek spaceship existed, its level of complexity would be vastly greater than that of a 19th century warship, which could be comparably simplified

They've kinda-sorta done the team-based ship combat thing, with Puzzle Pirates. There's not a lot that's very interesting about the actual mechanics on ships, just a lot of manual labor, so they substituted puzzles. Works pretty well, actually.

Now, multiplayer WW2 sub combat? Hmm. The navigator's table would be particularly good. But I dunno about loading torpedoes, minding the engines, or manning the radio. Important jobs, but I think they'd be kind of lousy in a game.

I think it's do-able, though, with some creativity. The radio could easily be like the Communication console on Artemis. There would just be an added mechanic where the more you communicate the more likely an enemy is to notice you.

I think the real downfall of WWII sub combat would be the hours of soul-crushing terrified silence. I'm only half kidding. Sub combat is all about waiting in silence until you take a single shot. Creative liberties would have to be taken.

Here's a pretty nice view of the Weapons station, Science station, and Main Viewscreen from last night.

In WW2, I just don't think there's enough game there.

Modern subs, though, that might be better. The sonar station would become very interesting, maybe the best job. And you'd have the nav table. and the captaincy. But being the helmsman would be unbelievably boring. Damage control could potentially be really interesting, but it would take a great deal of development resources to do well, and of course most of the time that person would be sitting on their thumbs.

I kinda think you almost have to go SF for this sort of thing, or else do an even more complex current system, like a battleship or an aircraft carrier.

Just discovered this game at Origins Game Fair this weekend, played the crap out of it, got to know the creator/programmer/everthinger a little bit (he's from Cleveland like me! Woo!).

Picked up my copy, and am looking forward to getting it up and running with my friends in the very near future.

And that's just the beards!

Here's a video of Tim "Tuvok" Russ playing Artemis at a con recently...

Oh man I so wish I could join you guys for Artemis.

Anyone still playing this? Interested in some multi-ship action? I bought the game, got my kids training on it now, soon I will have a powerful crew, able to work with some other ships on harder challenges.

I'm gonna get a group set up within the next month and have video recorded for the blog. Can't wait.

I would love to play it over the internet if we could get a group together again.

Somebody let me know if this is doable online. I see that Steam is now selling it and man, I would love to join the drunken adventures of Space Goodjers. In space.

I remember we did a bit of a dry-run online some time ago in preparation for doing it on a LAN for a con, so it's definitely do-able.

I would totally be game for this. Count me in.

Picked this up on Steam day one and I don't even know anyone willing to play locally.

I could be convinced to do this. Especially with steam making it easier to do.
