Tomb Raider reboot

Gee, I wonder if Uncharted's reluctant/clumsy hero had any influence on the development of this game? :)

Well, to be fair, Uncharted was a modernized version of TR cross bred with Indiana Jones.

Yeah, my take was that Uncharted really was a great take on the same type of story, but with more gunplay. I'm not surprised at all that Tomb Raider is going to put a lot of the stuff people loved about Uncharted into their game. I would have hoped they would.

I thought the trailer looked like a fun game, and probably a day one buy. I will be anxious to read some pre-release impressions, though. If they hold the game back from the press after a delay, that would be a really bad sign.

Honestly, they'd have been stupid not to take cues from Uncharted--even if the best cue they could have taken, the sense of humor, obviously was not.

Considering the popularity of Uncharted and the fact that both games stem from same the pulp adventure genre as Indiana Jones, there's no way I could reasonably expect TR not to show more similarities than simply a treasure hunter with guns in exotic locations. And I'm actually kind of digging the fact that there doesn't appear to be as much light-hearted humor as Uncharted. From the above trailer with the big action scenes that I'm betting are integrated into the gameplay, as well as the whole reluctant/beat-up hero thing, any more similarities and this game really would seem like it's taking too many cues from Uncharted, in my eyes.

Like I said, I'm a little less interested in this, only because I just recently finished the first two Uncharted games (like, last weekend) and will be playing the third in the next couple weeks as well. I'm just starting to get burned out on the genre is all, if only because of my concentrated exposure to it (Uncharted 1 + 2 = my entire PS3 library ATM). I am still curious to see how this turns out, though.

I hope they don't blindly copy from a leading competitor, and I guess that's the risk when you're doing anything new like this in the same vein as an something else that's established. The thing is, whether they're completely changing the series or not, they've got recognition from ~16 years of earlier games, and they're keeping certain aspects of it, so in some respects they've got a safety net, although in others they are moving onto something new.

It'll be interesting to see where the new series ends up in a few years. It could end up being very familiar yet very fresh.

I just watched the Assassin's Creed, Halo, and Call of Duty launches pass me by and I have no substantial interest in any of them. Tomb Raider is the only upcoming game I have some serious anticipation for. The third person survival action gameplay without a HUD just looks awesome. I hope it delivers.

Pre-ordered this before the Oz price hike came into effect.

Paying $60 instead of $80. I'm really sticking it to the man!

This is just cruel, you can only order the Collector's Edition from Gamestop and Amazon (8 Dec 2012).
But those are not the only places you can pre-order from! Which means you could miss out on the Aviatrix Skin ("exclusive outfit that dresses Lara up as a classic 1930s adventurer, bomber jacket and all") and 48-page hardcover comic book about why her ill-fated ship is making its journey. Hmm, 1930s adventurer, wonder who they mean.

To be honest, the bomber jacket looks like crap though. Although wouldn't it be cool to make the reboot and follow-ups start in the 30s? I don't think Lara needs modern technology.

The Collector's Edition is $100, and the game itself is $60, so that doesn't actually seem too bad to me. Lord knows if they sold the action figure by itself it would go for $100.

As far as I know, you still get the pre-order bonuses if you get the CE, to which I say, might as well get the Amazon version, the Challenge Tomb of Gamestop is likely to cost less as DLC then the artbook if either eventually gets released as such. The PC doesn't get a CE btw, as if you had to be told

PS3 CE

Has there been any play tests or previews? I really want to get a sense of how the game plays and how they structured the world. I am hoping for something more akin to Dark Souls than Uncharted...An open world to explore and discover with tight third person combat controls.

Yeah, that info's been available since Game Informer did their cover years ago. And more recently it was said that while it's an "open world," it's quite narrative driven. So, think along the lines of Uncharted meets a little of Metroid.

They did a press event for the game very recently, so if you go to the major sites you're bound to find those previews.

Wow, that sounds more like Dark Souls' environmental progression than I initially realized. Now I'm actually somewhat excited for the title. I'll admit all the bad press/CD's unfortunate dialogue had turned me off.

Preordered the PC version today for $29.25. Get hype.

Where did you preorder it for that price?

There's not a collector's edition for PC?

Must have plastic figurine XD
It'll go well fighting the Aion Demon with the 2h Battleaxe

And the PC version is always far superior than the consoles. I can mod PC versions. The "bonus" outfit is useless when you can grab and modify textures. If not texmod, I am sure there will be a way. TombRaiderHub is a good place to get hundreds of outfits for the previous titles.

I've never bought from GMG. Are you able to plug in the CD key you get from there into Steam?

Awesome, thanks! Preordered!

It's a Steam game, so you'll get a code to plug into Steam.

Yeah on steamworks they just send you an activation code. I will warn you, they are located in the UK and some people's banks will deny the charges or have trouble since it's a foreign transaction. I always use PayPal with them.

Thanks for the info. Just purchased. Can't argue with $30 for this game.

Somebody over there watched The Descent a lot methinks. Also, yes it does!
For anybody with too much time on their hands, her original origin story is that she survives a plane crash, then survives in the wilderness, then gets famous for that, then she becomes a travel writer, becomes more famous, and is disowned by her parents for being unaristocratic.

Tried making a promise to myself to not buy any games for a long while, but that deal is too good to pass up. Looks like I'll be playing this, Infinite, and my backlog next year.

It's the "Play Arts Kai" figure, so I expect it will be available separately.

It's looking worringly cinematic for me at the moment. Lots of explosions and stuff crashing into stuff. I'll wait to hear how it plays. I am stoked for the game and I think the reboot looks spot on but I'm not sure if the game play is going to be there to back it up.

I just was curious. I want the game now.

Okay, I'm officially psyched. Everything looks like exactly what I was most hoping for back when all of the controversy came up. A sense of Lara's development from uncertainty to increasing levels of confidence in her abilities. It's still possible that it will fall down when we see the whole thing, but... they've aimed for the right target, and it looks like they've got a really good chance of hitting it.

Great video. The gameplay looks great.

Everyone is always crapping on Tomb Raider games, but Underworld, Legends, Guardian, and the originals in their time were all great fun. I'm pretty excited for this.

That being said, I would imagine that a single player game with this kind of reputation will plummet in price (especially on PC) months after launching. It's hard to want to go out and buy a game with the industry in that sort of shape.

I became disappointed when I saw that there are going to be quick time events in the game. I was also hoping for combat that was more deliberate, precise, and slower paced. The action seems to devolve into stop-and-pop in every encounter. It does not look like stealth bow and hand-to-hand are viable options. I am going to cross my fingers.

Regardless, the art direction looks absolutely phenomenal. Just a beautiful looking game. It might be enough to get me to bite.
