Pencon 2012

I'm in... I'm so in. Since it's in a castle, wifey may even want to come. I'm a dirty skimmer, but if she didn't want to do gaming 24x7 is there anything interesting for her to do in the mean time? She's a Ren Faire nut, a casual gamer, a photographer, and an all around wonderful person. But more than one or two games a day and she gets crabby.

Thank you for adding to my vocabulary, I didn't know that word. And yeah, I am only half a person

There might be some stuff in the area.

But it's going to be all games, all the time at our event.

Does she knit or crochet? My wife can teach it and I was basically offering her a kids-less weekend of wine, cheese and crafting peace & quiet for the weekend while I get my gaming on.

You are not alone, Fedora, my wife and I are also in the DDFL club. But we are clearly in the minority.

I used to drink socially, but for whatever reason alcohol gives me splitting migraines now. NOT FUN.

She'll be on the tail end of the season, but Hocking Hills in autumn is some of the best leaf color in the state. Definitely opportunities for some photographic expeditions.

she can knit and crochet some larping costumes!

btw, as a person who has never entered the ohio region of this country, what is the weather like in October there? I would assume it is fall time so something between hot and cold? In Florida its the end of hurricane season so semi-wet with expected 70s and up. Ohio is a lot farther north, does it start getting sub zero early up there? Do I have any chance of building snow forts on this trip? I kind of want to make a Calvin and Hobbes themed snowman battle in front of a castle. Or is it non snow cold where I have a chance to pull my leather jackets out of the wardrobe which I never get to wear down here?

The weather is really variable in the spring and autumn up here. In mid-October it's not unheard of to be 65 and sunny or 30 and light snow. Occasionally in the same week. I would pack for cooler weather (40s-50s) to be safe. Leather jackets may be a good call. Plus they can double as leather armor for all the LARPing.

Is this light snow able to stay long enough for building? or is it the light snow type that melts when it touches the ground. Basically a slow falling rain.

Depending on the quantity, it could last a day or two. Usually it's not until the December or January months where the ground freezes and snow stays around for longer.

Yeah, generally accumulations don't stick in late October. You might see an inch of snow that will melt off within a few hours. Last year's PenguinCon, in mid-October, didn't see any horrible weather, and as I recall, we weren't even dressing for cold weather yet.

Yeah, no...you're not building anything in October snow. Again, I'd expect 40-50. Maybe some rain.

As for things to do at PenCon, here's a list of stuff that is probably safe to assume:

- a castle
- quite a few console gaming stations
- a USGS-certified mountain of boardgames and rooms full of people who actually want to play them with you or teach them to you
- hopefully at least one simulated starship bridge with sexy touchscreen consoles
- a shrill but adorable ginger in a bathrobe
- hopefully at least one board game developer demoing his games for interested parties
- Oilypenguin hilariously insisting that he's "not getting drunk again this year"
- maybe a table or two of PnP roleplaying
- Meeting people whose real names you do not know and you've never seen but whose voices you recognize and whose lives you feel oddly connected to

So...there's enough to fill a weekend, I assure you.

A) PnP is pathfinder? **EDIT** Oh, Paper and Pencil, just got it now, so I can bring my stuff
B) do we all get to go around in bathrobes or only gingers?
C) No sober people messing with drunk people? What hypocrisy is this?!

A bathrobe is permitted for any and all attendees, however, I'm sure most attendees would prefer you wear something underneath it.

hey. HEY.

I was sober for May (Yes, I know that rhymed) and found that to be the superior experience.

Seriously. We don't want any Rodney Dangerfields mucking about.

I'm sorry, but a bunch of people doing the Coltrane, "WHOO!" after every horde wave was my superior experience last October.

Tagging for possible attendance and guaranteed awesomeness.

You can expect me to be teaching and playing my Dune set again. The Spice Must Flow!

I would love to get the band back together and go save some penniless gypsies in a PnP.

There is some messing with the very drunk but they mess back so mess at your own risk.

I really don't see any reason why I wouldn't be able to come, so expect me to be there and be TOTALLY hilarious.

Will bring the 360 regardless of how i get there, and will be down for any gaming except persona.

I'm down with complaining about our tasks some more and threatening the NPCs.

Well, we've had a big week. The staff is working on putting together a pricing structure and I've been sent the list of food the castle is prepared to offer complete with pricing.

Did someone say something about giant turkey legs? Because I think someone said something about giant turkey legs. We'll see!

Oh, another question: will there be a boardgame list somewhere? I might have a couple worth bringing if they aren't already going to be in the Goodjer stockpile for the weekend.

I submitted my vacation request to my manager, and the only thing that'll stop me from attending this year is illness or a denied vacation.

We normally have a gdoc going closer to the event that lists what people are bringing and that will have sign-ups for the big games on it (like Twilight Imperium). You know, stuff that we can only really get 1 game out of.

Cool. I've got Game of Thrones 2nd Edition (the boardgame), Fyedaddy has Runebound with some expansion stuff if I can convince him to attend too, and I'm hoping to own Chaostle and maybe another good game or two before October.

There is never a shortage of good board games and usually a few people that know how to play them. That is of course no assurance the other players will have a clue (see Shogun game from MinPenCon 2012). Make sure you label your games in case there are multiple copies and so people know who to ask questions.

I will not settle for mediocrity.

Good god. Between that and the beer I'll end up sleeping through the weekend!
