Start: Jan 14, 2013

Requirements:

Own SoS, RoTF, and CoTG
Have the time to complete 3 Ascension games per week
Have a Chollange account: http://challonge.com/
Desire to win!

Tournament Information:

Proposed Tournament

Match format:

Deck: COTG, RoTF, and SoS varying between rounds

Format: Best of 3

Timer: 3 Days

Match Tie-Breaker: In game (player with second turn)

Tournament Format:

Qualification Round: 4 matches in Swiss Tournament format (similar to previous tournament). Essentially, you will play a best of 3 match and then based on your results you will be paired the following round against someone with similar standings. Winners move to the top and losers fall to the bottom. A player will be awarded 3 points for winning a match and 0 for losing a match. There are no ties. There will also be no byes this tournament.

Round 1 Deck: CoTG

Round 2 Deck: SoS

Round 3 Deck: CoTG + RoTF

Round 4 Deck: SoS + RoTF

Playoff Round: Depending on the number of players signing up, the top 20-40% will qualify for a single elimination playoff with the same match format above (best of 3, etc, etc). I will ask for feedback on deck selection and decks for each playoff round will be determined.

What do people think? I'm overloaded today with work (around 11pm here and taking a break to post this) but will update OP and thread title tomorrow assuming everyone is ok with this.

Signup sheet: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/...

Reporting a match
The match should be reported by the challenger (player on the left) after both matches have been played. To report a match, go to the report match page and choose the winner. Score is no longer necessary.

I signed up. I'm still not too clear on the format though. Are you going to assign matchups, or do we just start playing other people on the list?

Original post a work in progress as of right now. All will hopefully be clear soon.

Unless we're playing for prizes there's probably no need to take screenshots for results verification. Word of mouth by both parties should be enough.

Yeah, I think I'm being a little too harsh with that.

Edit: Added the optional tag. I really don't think we need screenshots ever, since people here are typically easy going and honest, but if we ever do need them, I'd rather people get used to the concept in the preseason and not have any "hiccups" during a competitive tournament.

Opponents have been assigned! Start reaching out to your opponent via PM!

There was an odd number of people so whoever signs up next can follow the game initiation process and play me!

Just for clarification, and understanding that in the future we'll handle all commincation with opponents via PM:

I seem to be assigned to play Chumpy first. We have an ongoing game that's just barely started. We should finish this game, and PM to confirm that our next game will be the first one for this league, yes?

And are we using 7-day clocks? I think the game allows 3 and 7, but because it's a chess-style clock, neither exactly approximates one week. Fine with me, in any case. Bit of a rules lawyer/neurotic clarifier. Thankfully the game regulates its own play once we actually start.

I would suggest finishing the game and then starting your official match but do what you please. They're exhibition matches.

I thought of the 3 vs 7 day rule as well, and realized it doesn't equate to the match being exactly one week, but thought the 3 day timer wasn't adequate.

I must added myself to the spreadsheet, too late for the first games I guess

Maybe write 7-day timer in the OP, then, in case there's someone else in the world as anal as me? (Pray not! )

Safari will lie to you. It will lie to you, and you'll be lucky to only double-post.

The original post clearly explains how to start a match with an available player (and how to find an available player). Are you Justin F? Can you add your forum name and gamecenter id instead of your real name?

Also, I edited the sheet to show a red cell if you have an opponent, and a green cell if you're ready to play (your current opponent cell is empty)! For those of you going on vacation, just make sure your current opponent cell has something (anything) typed into it and you don't have to worry about getting preseason requests.

Me and the Troll, ready to roll!

Yeah, I seem to forget how to read sometimes. I'll PM my opponent.

I'm still a little confused. I don't see you on the preseason sheet. There's two tabs on the spreadsheet link. Players provides information on who has the game and what decks. The preseason sheet is where you can signup and start playing people.

Awesome, excited to hear the results.

Blast!! Good game Athros. I knew there might be a problem when it said Completed on my game list when I there were still 8 stars on the board when I passed the turn.

On to game #2!!

Damn, 57-56! Close one.

ok, added myself to the spreadsheet as sirjoekcb's opponent (he had no ongoing game). PM sent.

It'll probably take a while since there's a 12 hour time zone difference between me and the M0nk3y Pr1nc3.

Honestly, I thought you had it in the bag with some of the cards you pulled. The last turn I was just trying to yank the last little bit out of the honor pool to try and keep you from destroying me.

I wish Ascension had a "Save this replay" feature. I would really like to be able to look the game back over, and see it played out again.

It was a great game TheWalt! On to the next!

i just signed up if anyone is looking for a game

Just thought I'd chime in that while I'm not participating at the moment it's due only to my time differences with just about everyone making it unlikely games will finish before my imminent "vacation". I'll be looking forward to a gwj tourney at some point.

K. Let's see how this goes.

Agreed on the tourney part. The reason I named this thread the Ascension Gaming League is because I see this short term preseason function evolve into a formal competitive format. The reason I say format and not league is because I think there are a number of options.

Season - A "season" based format where every player plays each other and get points based on a win. Person with highest points win the season, or the season qualifies a select group of players to then participate in a season end playoff. Examples: Premiership in England, NFL/NHL/MLB etc in US.

Tournament - A format that ends with a playoff but may have short qualifying rounds (shortened, narrow season) to make the playoffs. Example: March Madness, World Cup, etc

Ladder - A format where a player starts at the bottom of a ladder and wins his way to the top. Typically a player challenges a player higher on the ladder (how far up you can challenge depends on size of ladder). Typically a player alternates from a challenge mode and a defend mode after each match. I.e. if you challenge someone and win and move up, you now have to defend (or wait for a challenge) for a round. Guy at top of ladder must always defend. Example: Proving Grounds back in the day for Counter-strike...not used a lot

I think what most people want in the short term is a tournament, probably following a world cup format. In the long term, could we have all three? Maybe. Depends on interest and continued participation in the game.

I'm in.

I'd agree that a tournament is a good trial format with a season later on perhaps once we see how many people stick around.

I think I'd prefer Periodic tournaments to leagues; I think they're easier for folks to commit to since they are so finite. The breaks between them would make people fresher and more enthusiastic for the next one.

Next time please allow at least 24 hours before assigning opponents. For those of us who work and can't come to the forum that's a little bit of a crazy short window.

I'd suggest that any time one plans an event, one announce how long the signup window is. We will have this stuff down cold by the time we do the first GWJ tourney!

Yep, 3G connection gave out while editing. Sorry for mucking up the formatting, by the way, I didn't get any formatting controls on iOS.

I don't see the problem. I set it up so people could find people to play and assigned the first few matches to get things moving. As I write this there are two available opponents for you to challenge so it's not like you were left out. The window is still open and will always be open.

Great game TheWalt! You smashed me pretty hard. I regret banishing the card in the middle, allowing you to snag personal wormhole and Everbloom!

Great game!
