[trailer] Skyfall

Media blackout begins now.

That looks awesome.

My thoughts are - I hated it. I am sure it shows how old I am, or not hip, or whatever but remember when Bond used to be fun? Cool gadgets, beautiful women, over the top villains, and a suave sure hero. Perhaps this Bond is more in keeping with how people feel now days but he isn't my hero anymore.

Actually that isn't completely true. I liked the Bourne flicks a lot so I can like a darker hero. This just isn't a Bond movie to me.

Big fan of Roger Moore, eh?

I think the problem with that is that all those things are everywhere now, every movie has a great beautiful cast, everyone's cool, gadgets that we'd consider junk now are more advanced than most of the stuff Connery got to mess around with. If you're making a contemporary film, it has to fit into the contemporary world.

His films got pretty bad by the end but yes. And even Connery had a lot of gadgets, plus p*ssy Galore, that jet pack, and a lot of dryly said lines.

I felt these were more in tune with the books. I'm close and probably wont say it out loud but i might like these better. Well better than Moore and beyond. Nothing beats Connery.

Perhaps but to me that means it isn't a Bond film. When thinking about other current spy thrillers Skyfall is more Bourne and less Mission Impossible.

I make no judgments on which Bond you like better as long as you know there's a difference. I've swung this way and that on the issue of the "Best Bond." It usually hinged on which one I saw last. I find more interesting and fun debate is "Best Bond Villain."

Lazenby, surely? Just ignore the content of the whole film!

Haven't seen Quantum yet... STILL!! Worth me bothering? Skyfall looks... interesting? I can't really tell anything from the trailer it's just "someone's coming for MI6 and we have to defend ourselves.... in a Scottish (or is that Welsh - just behind Snowdon) valley.

Is that why I've hated the Bond movies so much?

Maybe I should give these new ones with Daniel Craig a shot, then.

I am in this camp. I have fond memories of the original Bond movies from watching them as a kid, but when I see them on TV I find they are dreadful. There's been a lot made about creeping "Nolanism" or every franchise turning too serious, but I think there is something else going on. Something deeply cultural. To me at least it seems tone deaf these days to make a movie about a super spy taking down a billionaire villain in a movie filled with camp. That's Austin Powers territory, IMO. The real world, as we've learned, is a bit more serious. Maybe that's the current tone of the collective consciousness creeping into cinema, but I find it would be sillier to make a Roger Moore-style Bond movie these days. It would seem odd to me.

Quick question on this. Was Quantum of Solace any good?

I've really enjoyed the Craig films, but I was never much of a fan of the "classic" Bond movies.

No. Quantum of Solace was a product of a the writer strike and is a mess because of it.

The Bond Identity. I'm fine with this direction although I wasn't a big fan of Quantom. It was kind of boring.

QoS has one really idiotic-looking henchman, but on the other hand, Lovely Gemma Arterton.

Quantum has a rare, rare thing that none of the other Bond movies have.

Spoiler:

A super hot Bond Girl that he doesn't sleep with.

New Bond >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> All old Bond

The new ones are far more faithful to the character as it was written than the old films ever were.

Super excited for this.

The best early Bond films were the first three, with From Russia With Love being my personal favorite. Those movies had their over-the-top moments, but they were really restrained compared to what would take place even in the rest of the Connery films.

Bond got progressively more and more goofy as it went along. It wasn't until Dalton that it even started honing it's edge back and it wasn't until Craig that they nailed it. Casino Royale remains my favourite Bond movie by a wide margin.

I was surprised to read about the directory and Craig significantly writing/rewriting QoS around the strike. More surprised even when Craig sounded like QoS was an embarrassment. Casino Royale felt stiff and plodding and almost dreadful, but I enjoyed QoS. To each his own.

Totally agree with you on this.

For some fun discussions from a few english blokes on the progression of the Bond series, give these a listen:
Bond Special, p1 - Connery & Lazenby
Bond Special, p2 - Moore & Dalton
Bond Special, p3 - Brosnan & Craig

You should see it, but don't expect much.

The last Brosnan one I saw had him para-surfing down a tidal wave on the canopy of a jet he'd just ejected from. Scaling back from that was wise, I feel.

I feel like Brosnan got a raw deal. The writing for the movies he was in was horrible and silly. He could've done much better if he were given quality material. Once he got an invisible car, well, where do you go from there?

The trailer didn't get me amped for the movie. At the same time I'm kind of glad it didn't give away the best parts or reveal the plot.

The most exciting part of this trailer? The music. That was pretty tight.

Casino Royale is my favorite Bond film, largely because it feels more like the original novels to me (the ones I've read; I don't claim to have read them all!). However, I also rather enjoyed several films from each of the prior main Bonds: Connery, Moore, and Brosnan. They were fun in their own way. Lazenby and Dalton are best forgotten.

I like Craig as Bond--more for Casino Royale than the rather empty Quantum of Solace. This trailer just showed what we expect from a Bond movie--guns, exotic locales, things crashing into other things, and Bond saying something tough. Kinda bland.

And c'mon--let Craig grow his hair a bit longer than that.

I think the new movies are great, but I feel they could do with just a tweak towards the direction of gadgets and silliness, for just a bit of that old school Bond flavour.

I've heard they're bringing back Q for the new movie, so that'll be good!

Ben Whishaw is the new Q and I'm very excited to see how he fills the role. I've only seen two things he has been in, Perfume and The Hour, but he steals the show in both instances. I'm also excited to see Ralph Fiennes for a certain reason... Big time spoiler/rumor ahead!

Spoiler:

The rumor I've read is that Judi Dench is passing on the M moniker to Ralph in this film, something to do with her mishandling MI-6 assets. This completes the circle of relaunching the Bond franchise and allows the producers to start remaking earlier films. Not a big fan of this possibility, but what else do you expect from internet rumors?
