DayZ - ArmaII zombie mod

I'll be getting on in an hour or so. Will be on vent if anyone wants to join. I need my zombie killing fix before the weekend is over.

I had the strangest run a little while back. Technically this was probable the best run I ever had. I ran into a city and manage to raid the place for supplies including 3 separate stores without running into any trouble what so ever. I had pretty much everything you could possible need. Winchester with a silly amount of ammo, map, knife, compass, etc. I had everything, and in turn the game became really really boring. There was no point in scavenging for food or anything, I could last days with all i had. I just ran around doing nothing til someone shot me. This game needs a little more high end stuff. It be nice to say build a house with fortifications and supplies.

I just purchased Arma II and it's expansion on Steam. I'll definitely be on tomorrow once I install the mod. Can I get an invite to the Steam group? (id = Poohblaster)

So now whenever I log in to a game, I spawn lying on the floor with everything in black and white with a big hourglass right in the center of my screen. Does this mean I am dead? It says I have ~2200 blood, but I can't move or do anything that I can tell. How can I respawn or whatever?

EDIT: It looks like this is the problem I am having: http://dayzmod.com/forum/showthread....

I had this happen a couple times on Sat. but I waited out the hour glass and I was near full health and had all my gear. Might be worth waiting the 3-4 minutes for the hour glass to run its course.

Been trying to recover from my craptastic day Sat. I've been able to recover all my survival gear except a compass. Tried to hit the office building in Vybor but doesn't seem to have anything in stock the couple times I checked there. Made my way back to Stary Sobor tonight and met another chap there that needed some painkillers, gave him some then he proceeded to pull the biggest train of zombies I've seen. I unloaded 4 mags from my M16 on the runners and another 2 mags from my 1911 taking down hoppers and crawlers. We then went and hit the military camp where I scored a M24 and 5 extra mags but then forgot to drop the stuff prior to tryin to move it to my backpack and lost all but one (maybe 2) of the extra mags.

Another group of survivors came in to town from the south and after we finished in the military camp. So I've had the opportunity to line up some shots with this rifle but didn't take them, even with one of their party being a bandit. Just didn't want to spoil their fun since I was getting ready to log.

I've really noticed that as long as you are prone the zombies really won't agro on you, I've had them as close as 10ft maybe even 5ft in broad daylight and they've not given a damn about me. Maybe they just think I'm one of their crawler buddies with a weapon and backpack on my back.

Loved the story about the lighthouse master0!

There is a lot of high end stuff already, and more to come. Not going to list anything (spoilers?), but there's a lot of stuff you simply can't get in most towns and cities.

Think the highest end item you can get is if you find, repair, and refuel a helicopter. Someone mentioned to me there are also *military* helicopters about.

Rocket is currently pulling his hair out getting the server architecture up to scratch, as server admins keep trying to do dodgy things. Apparently he's had about eight hours sleep over the entire weekend.

A provisional changelog is out.

I have some extra compasses and watches in my backpack that you're welcome to if you still don't have one the next time we run into each other.

I came across a crashed chopper in the middle of a field yesterday. There's supposed to be super high-end military gear at these crash sites, but I think the server I was on had the loot/spawn bug thing happening so there was nothing there. I couldn't tell if it was repairable, but I could climb into the gunner seat. I read that repairing a chopper is a monster project. You have to find scrap metal to repair the top and rear rotors, other stuff to repair the dashboard and instruments and then something crazy like 30-50 jerry cans to fuel it.

Having a blast reading all the survival stories. Seems like the sound of gunfire brings the zombie horde down on you pretty quick... I'm guessing there's no option for stealthier melee attacks?

i actually came across a rotor piece as loot. thought it was a bug.

Hey guys, accidentally setting off a smoke grenade at your feet in the middle of an army base at night will greatly shorten your life expectancy. In case you were wondering, or anything.

Also, if you do play at night, set your HDR video option to the highest setting, which will fix the worst of the banding/posterizing.

As far as I know, no. People have been asking, though.

Nope, no melee. You have to think real hard if you really want to pull the trigger when in populated areas. I did find a pistol with a silencer once, though.

Looks good, but I'm really worried about the removal of bandit skins. I can see the realism aspect of it since in reality you wouldn't know who you can trust or not. But in the end, it's still a game, and without any kind of visual cue I think it's going to turn into deathmatch with some zombies around. There should be some kind of consequence to running around murdering players and I thought being ostracised with the bandit skin was perfect. I guess now everyone is just going to shoot each other on sight just to be on the safe side.

WE ARE THE REAL MONSTERS

I've never been killed by anyone in a bandit skin, but about 5 people in survivor skins have got me. Then i decided to shoot first since they all just seem to wait till i turn my back then shoot me.

After my first kill on each guy (I have two full copies of Arma II on two different machines with different keys) I found out there's actually a bug in game right now with banditry... After logging out an hour after a kill or so and logging in the next day, i was no longer bandit and had over 3000 humanity...yikes...oddness with humanity can occur.

Had a survivor walk through a doorway in a mini mart in polana without seeing me in the corner, i'd just come in with a brand new toon, had only a 1911 with 1 mag for a gun and ammo and i put the whole mag into his back then took his revolver, 10 speedloaders, and alice pack full of goodness and all his tools and hoofed it right back out of town. Woot, my mule was set:) Got up to my buddies and my hidey hole in tact.

Night before that two of us decided to scout the small airfield up north, the one without the barracks...way less loot at it and not as good as the NW one at all, but still can find some stuff...and of course vehicles can spawn there....but we havn't got so far as tryin to repair vehicles yet. Too confused about their persistence and how it's done to be honest. We were approaching in stealth crawl near sunset when we heard gunfire from one of the two hangers. We watched a few and deduced we thought it was just one guy and we'd risk it. He kept killign zeds, tryin to loot and running back and forth between the hangers...seemed odd to me, i'd be tryin to stealth it, not shoot everything. We crawled up between the hangers, deciding to kill him if we could and loot him. Bought this time we're midway up between the hangers spread out and in crawl still, he comes runnin between them this time but stops and looks right at us....dunno what tipped him we was there...put 24 rounds at him from my M4A1 (i believe it was, got from a deer stand) he turned to run as i fired and i tried to track him as i was firing...thought he'd got away into the hanger but we rounded the corner and he was dead..musta fell over from blood loss right as he was passing out of our sight. Dude was loaded, we both got good stuff, blood packs, frag grenades, i upgraded my M4 to a M4 with holo sight and M203 grenade launcher, got lots of mags for it off him, few other things...then we hoofed it before anyone else showed up since all the gunfire'd been going on, didn't feel safe...:) Just wish he'd had NVG.

Zombies dont seem to be much trouble compared to other survivors/bandits. I've had far more deaths to people in survivor skins than zombies. You can sneak around zombies pretty easy and if you do aggro them get up and sprint into a building or out to the contryside (building better) and kill them using a pistol or winchester...then move on quickly.

I'm probably gonna try to hook up with a bigger survivor group to get more experience working as a lil bigger team and getting military vehicles/choppers etc.

RE helos, there was something about having to enter them then go to the map screen and access the cargo from there. Hope you still know where it is, because they're always full of something.

And 1.5.8 is out:

* TO INTERACT WITH MOST ITEMS: YOU NOW NEED TO OPEN GEAR MENU (G) THEN RIGHT CLICK ON THE ITEM! SUCH AS BANDAGING AND EATING AND sh*t

* This is a pretty major update. I don't really know what affect the new sickness and temperature system will have on player behavior especially with antibiotics being so scarce.
* It is the genesis of an idea, so please remember this might cause havoc. You need to be careful.
* To light a fire, you need matches and wood in your inventory. Place more wood in the inventory of a fireplace to keep the fire going.
* A fire that does not have wood in it will go out when you try to light it.
* You can tell you have an infection, because your character will start coughing. The infection causes you to loose blood down to a minimum of 6000. This leaves you with reduced blood until you take antibiotics.

Changelog:
* [NEW] Server cleanup system replaced with a more agressive one
* [NEW] Inventory Interaction system (right-click on items in gear screen to bring up interactions)
* [NEW] Temperature System now implemented (effects are limited)
* [NEW] Chance of catching an infection the lower your temperature
* [NEW] Chance of catching an infection from already infected players
* [NEW] Water can be filled in ponds, all water pumps, wells, but not the sea
* [NEW] Forced disconnection saving for abort and alt+F4
* [NEW] Zombie's will investigate player deaths
* [NEW] Adrenaline rush from panicing causes greately increased hunger for a while
* [NEW] Bandaging Sound when bandaging yourself/someone
* [NEW] Coughing sound when you have an infection
* [NEW] Camera Shake when temperature drops extremely low
* [NEW] PROTIP: Use Global Chat/VOIP in populated areas
* [NEW] Fire requires wood to keep burning
* [NEW] Various Loot spawn balancing changes
* [FIXED] Should not be pellets for the Winny
* [FIXED] Whinny is way to powerful and quiet (mmmm your tears will be delicious)
* [FIXED] Helicopter loot despawning too fast
* [FIXED?] Too many zombies for the Carebears to be able to play
* [FIXED] Fog is way too thick
* [FIXED] Climbing a ladder with a pistol will cause you to fall
* [FIXED] Zombies not attracted to Flares and Chemlights
* [FIXED] Panic noises going apesh*t all the time
* [FIXED] Zombie spotted alert far too quiet (increased slightly)

So in essence he made the game even harder. I'm not sure if that's awesome or just plain painful. Probable both. The bit with flairs attracting zed is both awesome and bad. I always wanted rocks or something to throw to distract zed, but flares will do. Although nighttime is gonna suck more then usual. Hopefully the loot will be a little more varied and balanced. On that one really good run I posted before I found five flash lights. In one house.

So, I found a helicopter today. No, not a wrecked helicopter. An actual real working Huey. But I suspect it was out of gas. And as best as I could tell, there was only a crossbow stored in it. I could successfully enter Pilot, Commander, Gunner, and Back Seat positions. Coincidentally, I found it nearby a perfect place to get something like that fixed. A Factory. The factory I ended up in had all sorts of repair stuff in it. Lots of scrap, but I also found a couple of wheels, and engine, a fuel tank, and a windshield. Just no toolkit unfortunately.

I heard that empty tin cans actually work. Maybe that's why they are lootable items. But smoke grenades DEFINITELY work! Oh boy do they work.

I almost peed myself when I read this.

Server for downloading the patch is down, or at least the US one is, Swedish one is still up.

If I were to buy Arma 2 and install this (and I'm trying not to, for some reason) how would I connect to the servers?

demonbox wrote:

There's a comprehensive installation guide here and a video tutorial here. Short version is that you install Arma 2 and the expansion, make a folder for the mod, add a shortcut that tells the game to load the mod.

Once the mod is installed, you just go to multiplayer and pick any server running the "DayZ" mission.

Oh, and there's a hotfix patch to 1.5.8.2 that fixes too few matches spawning, among other things. Not sure if the servers have updated to it yet, though.

This is exactly where I thought this game was headed. Welcome to a fairly hard core survival simulator... also with zombies.

Well if you want more survival tips, here's another one: bullets are precious. If you hit 'F' you can toggle your fire mode until you get to 'flares'; that way, if you accidentally hit the trigger, you'll waste a road flare instead of a bullet. Just remember to switch back if you need to, or you may end up running wildly across a hillside trying to shoot the zombie that is following you and wondering why the grass is all lit on fire and why there are flares going off everywhere around you.

Goddamn do I hate doing that, running around a bunch of zombies and throwing flares in their face. Not particularly heroic now is it.

After, and frankly during, my escapades shooting Taidaan in the rear to death I bemoaned the fact that my mouse does not in fact have a safety. I've actually taken to holding my trigger finger over mouse 2 when I'm not on top of a quarry. In other games you are wailing away on the mouse 1 button, but here you use it perhaps least of all unless you're in the gear menu.

Started this up today to try and play "for real".

I was on the coastline in complete darkness. Against the night sky I could see the shifting shapes of zombies wandering on a nearby hillside. I crouched down and tried to make my way the opposite direction without firing a flare. And then I saw this faint glow in the distance and thought I would check it out, see if it was survivors. As I get closer, the light's moving away. Then I'm on a roadway of sorts. Gravel crunching under my feet as someone carrying a flare is racing away from me. He's coming up on a small town and it looks like he's trying to open the door of a house. Not sure what to do, I drop to prone and figured I'd wait and see what happens. He turns towards my general direction and fires a pistol. Bad move for him... from around the back side of the house come 5 or 6 zombies. He's dead in seconds, the flare at his feet. The zombies then scatter after a few minutesand I slowly belly crawl my way over to his backpack to loot what I can. Then I hear a crunch behind me, the rustle of chainlink fence. I make a break for it, out of the flare's light and crawling prone I end up underneath a nearby chicken coop I think. Another scavenger appears picking over what I left behind. I'm guessing this one's a bandit based on his facemask (is that how you identify it?). He's scanning around and then I think he sees me so I start backing out of the coop. I kneel, line up a shot and not realizing the music has changed I get one bullet off before the group of zombies approaching me from behind tear me apart.

Absolutely awesome game! Wish I had more time for it!

I had just gotten a Winchester and crawled away from town. Someone was shooting in the distance, and I didn't want to be involved. But there was a zombie crawling behind me. If I stood up and ran I'd outdistance it but draw the attention of all of the other, faster zombies. So I crawled, in the rain, for the a long, long hundred yards, over a hill and out of sight of the town.

And then a little late I got cocky and in a hurry and tried to climb a cliff. Fell and broke my leg.

So I lost all my gear last night. I only jumped in real quick to check out the patch. I had last logged out in the NW airport barracks and figured I'd pop in, check the loot spawns, and then get out of dodge. But stupid me couldn't resist the temptation of the control tower and what might be inside it. While stumbling around in the dark I heard a walker close by so I went prone and waited. Then he tripped over me so I had no choice but to shoot him, which you can probably guess how that went. Luckily I managed to run right into a ladder and quickly climbed up it. So safely up on my roof perch I couldn't really get a good angle to the ground to pick off the horde of about 20 zeds down there. If I crouched on the edge of the roof and then leaned a little I should be able to get them. Not so much.

Lesson learned: If you're on the very edge of a roof, the leaning animation apparently is enough to make you topple over the edge. I knocked myself unconscious and then the zombies ate my face.

Funny thing is I don't actually mind it too much. Starting off new, with nothing, and having to scavenge for supplies again is actually kind of fun.

It's a bit like a roguelike in that regard. There's a lot of interesting decision in the early game, so its fun to do, while at the same time resetting your risk (because you haven't collected all that valuable stuff yet).

It is very much like a roguelike, which is quite possibly *the* biggest draw for me. (That, and a huge open world. Also, zombies.)

One thing that I think would be very interesting is if there were some sort of pseudo-endgame. The thrill of the roguelike is starting from zero, descending all the way to accomplish some task (get the amulet, etc), and then ascending back up and escaping - or, more often, failing, and restarting in the name of succeeding in that pursuit this time.

It would be neat if the surviving and collecting gear built up to being able to go raid some near-impenetrable place or pursue some other difficult endgame-y accomplishment. Nothing that takes away from the open-ended sandbox nature of the game, mind you, just maybe a few optional goal-like things that serve as nice carrots to chase when you're loaded with gear and not struggling to survive.
