DayZ - ArmaII zombie mod

Here's the video I used to install.

The comments are actually useful. For instance, to get this method to work I had to use all lowercase for the filename and then run the program as the admin then boom, it worked.

Edit: I posted an event on the group tonight. Use Vent to find each other, then direct chat once we have visual.

Elycion, Lucky Wilbury, Redhwk, TheWanderer, Vega, Grubber, MoonDragon, and Karmajay all got invites. If you didn't request one, but I've seen you post here and I already have you on my Steam friends list, an invite was sent. Unless I forgot/didn't notice, because that happens too.

Oh! Thank you! I may play a bit this weekend. This is one of the few FPS's out there where my ~200 ping doesn't really matter too much.

Does anybody know if the Amazon ARMA 2 stuff activates on Steam?

nope.

I can't vouch for this game, but the copy of Deus Ex: HR I got from Amazon activated on Steam just fine.

there are things you can activate on steam that aren't always on that list though.

Also, fun game tonight. shame we didn't meet up until the end and the server crashed. Guess thats what I get for spawning in far east of elektro and you guys are on the other side of the map.

Well... went and had a great time tonight with Taidaan, Moondragon, and... someone. I'm sorry I forgot you.

The point is... I need a safety on my mouse. Not only did I wound Taidaan and bandage him, feed him, and transfuse him blood, but when lags got weird... I shot him dead. Even though he was, in actuality, 500+ meters in front of me I killed him. I'm a bandit now, with -7 humanity. I feel horrible. I'm a moron, first off, and second off... I had a great time tonight. Does that make me a sociopath or just bad at games? I don't know.

Yeah that other was me Good times, I got quite the tongue lashing from the wife about talking on Vent, tomorrow I'm going to be a silent partner, listening in on the conversations. I think this gives me the incentive to get the garage swapped over to the office/workout room so that I can get on Vent.

Yeah, that didn't go too well. Server had issues all night, and I had my first death at the hands of TheWanderer because of it. We were trying to rendezvous with Lucky, Redhawk, and Moondragon when the server didn't translate that I was actually in motion. So 2 minutes after I started moving eastwards, Wanderer says "What's the hold up? Lets get moving." To which I replied "What?" He then asked who the other guy was next to him. A few seconds later, that guy ate the 12-guage, and I (some 500+ meters away) died from it. We both blame the server...

Edit: I tried to leave that initial incident out, Wanderer. It makes you look bad

I woke up early this morning and managed to get DayZ running. Spent about 10 minutes being chased by zombies.

I have learned the most important lesson: Don't shoot a zombie in the middle of town.

The servers were pretty empty this morning, because it's 7AM, but I did see one survivor. I couldn't tell if he was a bandit or not.

How do you get the in-game voicechat to work?

I spent an hour trying to get the mod working last night to no avail. I'm gonna start over and try again after work today.

What's the problem Gumbie?

My Arma:OA install got buggered, and wouldn't properly "verify game cache." Kept reloading the same file over and over again. I finally ran Steam as an admin and that fixed it for me.

I discovered, after TheWanderer's my our mishap yesterday, that bandits are pretty distinct. They look like something out of Modern Warfare, having masks and military gear/colors.

In-game chat is done by cycling to whatever channel you want to use via " , " and " . " Most people use the Side channel for general discussion, and the Direct channel for talking to someone nearby (I don't know what the range limit on Direct Chat is). Caps Lock is the voice chat button, but don't use it in the Side Channel, as it tends to bother people.

This never did work out for me. While it will actually load through steam as soon as it connects and starts the map it crashes. Every single time i try through steam.

I just created a shortcut on my desktop that points to the OA exe and it works fine that way.

Lot of people are kicking people off of servers for using ingame/direct chat. Claiming it causes lag and or buggy with the servers.

Got everything installed from Amazon, downloaded the mod and enabled it in game. Tried to connect to over 20 servers and got "Connecting failed" every single time.

This is a current problem regardless of install. I've yet to read what the cause is.

I just created a shortcut on my desktop that points to the OA exe and it works fine that way.

I nuked my OA installation and re-ran it.

Then opened up OA and played for about 5 minutes.

Then I did a forced update via the DayZ updater tool.

Loaded up and ran fine.

Connecting to servers takes a long time, though. I think housing all characters in a central server keeps cheating down, but definitely makes it rough when your game spikes in popularity like this.

Someone made a post on the official forums for listing time shifted servers. Something to check when looking for one.

Was this the retail download or the steam one?

I did the same (delete and reload and played in order arma2 and AO) and reloaded the mod and no luck through steam.

Be sure to read the install guide. Other than installing the files in the right place there's some command line stuff you need to add.

I'll be looking to play some DayZ tonight around 8:30-9:00pm EST if anyone wants to join me.

For Steam, specifically remember this step:

7) Go to Steam and right click Arma 2: Operation Arrowhead, go to 'Properties', 'Set Launch Options', add "-mod=@dayz -nosplash" without quotes in the target line and click OK. You can find other launch options, like windowed mode here.
8) Run Operation Arrowhead and select "Launch ARMA 2: Combined Operations" to play the game.

I forgot that step.

Last night we found out that these additional servers have shifted time:

"NYC 7" (mind the gap!)
"TX4" (did I get that right?)

I logged in this morning, just to bum around the town where we left off. Found that the sign on the top of the hill actually lies. It has its directions reversed.

The town surrounding was crawling with Zeds. I did a big detour to the other side of the town where it seemed there weren't as many, and there was a barn. Hoping to find some supplies/ammo in the barn, I snuk my way into the barn with only one minor incident requiring firearm discharge. But it seems that the deeper into the town I got, the more Zeds spawned behind me. :/ I logged off inside the barn. With several Zeds patrolling outside. But I'm feeling fairly confident so far. I got about 30 bullets on me in total. And being inside the barn gives me a certain sense of security--if somewhat false.

If we collectively choose to continue our adventures together, I'm still in the same neighbourhood.

One thing that really puzzles me about the game though. My own footsteps are significantly louder than when the Winchester rifle fires. You guys were laughing at me last night when I scared myself with my own footsteps, but it's true. Especially when I cross from grass to gravel, the footstep noise is quite loud, and since my 5.1 system doesn't do "down" the noise comes from behind. Which freaks me out. Especially since gravel noise isn't always perfectly aligned to gravel texture on the ground. Is there a way to lower the sound of my own body? The breathing is fine. Perfect in fact. But the shuffling while I crawl, and footsteps when I crouch/walk are WAY too loud.

Oh, and another question. Do corpses often disappear when you shoot things?

Let's just say that my mouse needs a safety. I totally shot Taidaan in the ass. Upside is I know how to do a blood transfusion now.

TheWanderer wrote:

I had a blood bag on me at one point and was in desperate need of blood but could not figure out how to use it.

Do you need to be in a hospital to do it or can you be anywhere? And can you perform it on yourself or is it required that someone else perform it on you?

You can do it anywhere, but I believe someone else has to do it. I could be wrong though.
