Portal 2 Catch-All

Updated it to make things a bit more clear.

That was pretty fun, Norfair. Short and sweet.

Spoiler:

I did the final jump from the turret spot to the bottom portal pit and overshot the glass platforms by quite a bit. Probably not intended, right?

Any feedback would be appreciated. I'm planning on making maps for a little while, and would appreciate the feedback for future creations.

I must have gotten dumber since portal 2 came out. I can't seem to solve anybody else's levels listed here. I tend to get half way and stall out.

Also Kexx, your maps seem really dark. All the portalable surfaces were pitch black for me. Made it kind of difficult to tell where I could and couldn't get to.

I hadn't considered jumping from there...

Hell, I can't even do your second map. I come up just short of the platform at the end.

I finished Jump #2 after work today. Not being tired allowed me to actually string together more than one thought in a row!

Agreed with the above comment on Kexx's maps -- both very dark. Looking forward to playing them if you'd just lighten up a bit!

Will try to work through everyone else's maps too.

You have to maximize your velocity before going though the final portal

I made some updates to the map to make it a bit more obvious that the final landing platform needs to be activated too.

Can you edit maps you've published? I wasn't sure so I made a change, deleted the old map, and saved it anew with this link:

http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfile...

If this makes it any better, please let me know. Hopefully the description and the one minor change help some (after a couple of deaths, at least). Also, seeing how creative some of the other maps are this early on is awesome. Mine is much less an exploration of movement in space then it is a maze (thus the name)- going to play with movement a bit more for my second map.

I don't get why my maps look so dark. I tried playing them from the editor, then after they were published, I played them from queue, and they seem fine to me. Not amazingly bright, but all portalable surfaces are white. Let me see what I can change up, because I've even added light windows instead of strips, and it doesn't seem to be working...

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated!

EDIT:

Ok, I added 4 more Windows, and several light strips throughout. Also, I unpublished and republished, so here's the new address so you can re-subscribe again. Please let me know if it's still dark. I worked on Deja Vu Nightmare, I still have to work on Ad Nauseum!...

I'm pretty sure I'm doing that. I think I'm jumping from the highest place (the platform that the laser passes over) in the map to the lowest place (the pit at the beginning) but I'm just coming up short of the platform. I've only tried it twice though.

I did the same twice and died both times. Odd.

I tried your maze map, Demon, and it's plagued by the same darkness issues I think others found in Kexx's maps. Screenshot.

A patch came out yesterday-ish that said it fixed some lighting issues. Maybe the map needs to be rebuilt again?

I don't know what these guys are talking about Norfair. I can make the jump every time.

You guys should try these tests and use them as inspiration on your next tests. 12 Angry Tests

I wanna goooo hoooooome! I wanna finish my maaaaaaaaap!!! I hate woooooork!!!

ahem...yes, it´s addictive...

I've tried all the maps posted here so far, and I have to admit that Kexx's Ad Nauseam was the only one I managed to solve. Must work on some of my own...

I'd like an invite, but I don't know how to find out what my Steam URL is to post here?

To add on that, you can set a custom url (like http://steamcommunity.com/id/hyetal) after you hit 'Edit my Profile' on your profile screen.

That's the only one I haven't solved. Course it was still suffering from darkness last time I tried.

For those who have played my map, I'm curious how you felt about the first step and getting the edge-less safety cube. Was it a little too tough to figure out or just about right to give you that "a-ha" moment?

I played it again this afternoon. I did everything exactly the same as I was doing before and easily cleared the platform this time. No idea what was causing me to come up short before.

Those are made in Hammer. That kind of stuff isn't possible with the in-game editor. Not a knock against it at all, just saying the in-game is kinda the 'lite' editor and Hammer is the 'pro' editor.

I was wondering how he got the catwalk stuff in there.

Here's my second map. I designed this one to be fun rather than challenging. It's based on one of my favorite sections of the first Portal, where you are first introduced to turrets and the various ways to get rid of them.

As always, I'd love some feedback!

You are correct. My point was to use them as inspiration. Less is more type thing.

Thanks! I've set it up as http://steamcommunity.com/id/Crowbar... (some other bugger had already used CaptainCrowbar - apparently Steam profile names don't have to be unique, but the ID URLs do).

Well, the level editor has a cap. I was rendering to test, wasn´t even finished, and it said Error: The chamber has too many items. Please remove some items.

What the hell? Why limit us? Let my computer´s horsepower limit me, not the editor! Bah...

I heard there was a limit. Figured it was pretty high though... I haven't hit it yet even with my craziest ideas.

Yeah, I had a test chamber with about 30 turrets in it (plus a bunch of other stuff, buttons, cubes, lasers, etc.) and still didn't hit a limit.

I searched the forums a little, not thoroughly, but I did find a thread with someone complaining about the same thing. A Valve person answered, and explained that the limit exists due to avoid crashing by designer and other players. They are thinking about increasing the limit.

The user in the thread created a map with just cubes falling on aerial faith plates and colliding, he was just testing out stuff. What got my interest was that the Valve person saw the image, and told him to lose the cube droppers, and just have the cubes. He explained that droppers are their most "expensive" item, in terms of memory.

I would love a sheet with items and their sizes. That would help out immensely.

I've also had insane maps with loads and loads of stuff, but didn't get the cap limit. I believe it's an added equation. My issue, for example, I'd stake my life on it, was that my room was massive in size as well. It hit all x, y, z axis limits in size. Then I filled it with items, so that's probably the equation that got me the message.

Either way, I removed some items, fixed it up, playtested it countless times, and now, I believe it is ready. Fellow Goodjers, I give to you:

THE SPHERE ROOM

Ok, made my first map. I'm sure the intended solution won't be hard to work out, so if you can break it and solve it in another fashion, I'd appreciate the heads-up!

Consider it a challenge, heh!

Edit: Kexx, that last map looks nuts! I'll have to give it a try!
