Legend Of Grimrock

I feel really under powered in this game. I just made it to level 4, and even though I feel as though I'm being a completionist, fighting and collecting almost everything, I still barely survive any given encounter.

Toorum, or whatever there is left of him. My brother just beat it today, and told me not to continue on until I find him. One key-less door in the SE of the map left to open!

Spoiler:

There is absolutely nothing mission critical about finding Toorum

Yeah, but knowing he's there - probably right under my nose - will drive me mad until I find him.

Casual:

What difficulty are you playing on? What classes are you using?

Also, it's a pretty hard game, even on normal.

Yeah, this game is deliberately difficult I believe. Even with a balanced party it's pretty easy to have combat not go your way and find yourself in a world of trouble. I think that's why I enjoy it so much--that and the exploring aspect

I'm playing on Hard now with 2 rogues, 2 mages. The game this way definitely requires a careful and methodical approach. Even on normal, you will find that the new monsters on new floors scale pretty well with your character progression.

However, you start the game with nothing and the scramble to find useful equipment is one of the things that makes the early game tricky. As you get good loot, a lot of new tactical options open up: range attacks, spells (offensive and defensive), armor tailored to a char's strengths or weaknesses.

Level 4 is I think the first level to have an area where monsters respawn. If you're feeling underpowered, you can take some time grinding in that area to get some XP.

My first run through was on normal with the default party fighter (minotaur), fighter, rogue, mage, my second run through was on hard with fighter (sword), rogue (daggers), rogue (bows), mage (air). Not having 2 fighters up front makes the game really hard.

I used a guide on my hard run through to find the 10 secrets I'd missed from my normal run through.

New monsters seem to always be really difficult. Once you've seen a particular monster type a couple of times, you know how to deal with them. But the first time is just a killer (get it?).

And giant land crabs of death can just fall down a hole and die, I hate them so much.

What are crabs doing so far away from water anyway?!

That will teach you to fool around in dungeons

That Goromorg said I was her first.

Look at what you've done Q. Happy now?

You still have Zoidberg. YOU ALL HAVE ZOIDBERG!

I need a hint.

Anyone else remember the old hint books with level 1/2/3? Level 1 was no help, level 2 was usually just enough to figure out the puzzle, and level 3 was the solution. I need a level 2 hint here.

On level five you find a scroll that says:

Spoiler:

The gate of iron shall open if you take your time and rest in the place where the dragons gaze.....

To me, that means you should rest in front of the two stone dragons on the level but that's not doing anything for me. Do you need to just stand there for a while VS rest?

Also a question about level 6:

Spoiler:

Can you go back to level 5 from six? The sign on the wall says something about you can't go back or what have you and there is a gate blocking the stairs....

Thanks,

Tim

Spoiler:

Take note of the orientation of the two dragons.

Read it like this
The gate of iron shall open if you take your time and rest in the place where the dragons gaze.....at the same time.

No idea about the second question, I haven't gotten there yet.

Yes, you can.

Yes, you can.

Eventually you can, at some point near the end of my sweep through 6, the gate back to 5 opened. Not sure what triggered it.

Thanks for all the help googers, that was quick!

I figured out the madness maze but didn't realize that:

Spoiler:

You need three damn keys to get off this floor! DAMN! I was all excited when I got the second key, only to realize....

So, two other questions (I know I could go to another site but I don't want to read too much, I hope yall don't mind assisting?)

1. Level six, haunted hallway

Spoiler:

There is a pressure plate, when you step on it you can hear a wall opening, I can't find that damn wall and am beginning to think the third key is in here somewhere since I don't remember anything else of note happening in this room. So, is the wall that opens in the same room, the haunted hallway "room"? And, there is a button two blocks north and one block west of the pressure plate, on the wall, is the button related? I can't remember if I pushed it before and maybe it opened the secret room in the NW corner of the room.

2. Level six, multi-story transporter
[spoiler]There is a button on the east wall, I think it's the third teleport, the one with the gargoyle behind you. Does that button do anything else other than release the poison? I was thinking you had to push the button then run like hell to another location on one of the two accessible floors but, the small room with the key doesn't yield anything and the other floor is the main floor, that's a lot of ground to cover....)

Thanks again!

Tim

Spoiler:

The pressure plate is timing dependent, I think the switches just open bits of walls IIRC

1. You'll find the wall opening if you stand on the plate long enough to let it open more.

2. I think it does something important, but I don't think it's timer-based.

stuff

1. Level six, haunted hallway

Spoiler:

Stand on the pressure plate long enough to fully open the door. Get a skeleton to walk onto it as you head for the opening. It's very nearby, but the skeleton keeps the door open just a tad longer.

2. Level six, multi-story transporter

Spoiler:

That button just releases poison, nothing else.

Ok, thanks again.

All issues except one button solved. I can see myself playing through this again, a little slower and a little smarter, finding the few secrets I've missed, too much of a pain to remember what button's I've pushed and which one's I haven't to try and figure it out at this point. I do enjoy this game, takes me back to the days of Bard's Tale/EOB etc. I like the 3D effect of the monsters, the first time one of the skeleton's tried to put a spear in my hide, I actually leaned back in my chair.

So:

Level 5, dragons, got that figured out, thanks. Should have seen that one, rookie stuff.... Only thing is:

Spoiler:

All that for a damn lurker's vest? I'm not rogue heavy so that was a lot of work for little reward....

Level 6, pressure plate, damn timing on that one is HARD, as hard as any in the game so far, I almost didn't make it but then:

Spoiler:

A snail came by and triggered the plate, I then realized why that room was spawning monsters and using a snail, it was much easier.

Stairway up to level five:

Spoiler:

It unlocked for me after I opened the last gate to get to level 7

Now I just have to find:

Spoiler:

The key to the bronze door right before level 7, time to backtrack....

Thanks again for the help, loving the game. The puzzles have all been solvable with a pen and paper and a little logic. Some of the timing secrets are tough but doable.

Tim

Finished.

Man, that was a pain in the ass! I was pretty tired of the "Game Over" sequence by the end.

Man I am stuck like Chuck.

I am on level 10, just outside of the inner chamber and it's obvious what needs to happen but I only have one key, I don't know where I got it and I hope to hell I haven't missed a key somewhere. I went back through level 9 but I didn't see it there. If I've missed it somewhere I might be done or start a new game, I don't want to spend a ton of time backtracking, might as well spend it catching things I missed on the first run....

So:

Spoiler:

I have opened one side of the puzzle and it's clear you need to open both sides, push the button to make the optical ball (whatever it's called) go across to the other side, push the other button to open up the gate to go into the receptacle on the other side but, like I said, I'm down a key. I opened up one side, loaded a save and opened up the other side to see what was going on. Is the other key on the level? I don't know what the push tile near the statues is doing yet, is it important at this point? Hints please, not full solutions.

Thanks!

I assume you're at the bit right at the start of the level

I'll give you some hints of increasing explicitness

Spoiler:

With only 1 or 2 exceptions the path through each level is pretty much self contained, so all the keys need to solve a level are present within that level

Spoiler:

There are 2 round keys to find in the initial set of rooms, for the two round key locks

Spoiler:

You can use the red gem puzzle to manipulate which of the two sides of the area you can get to

Spoiler:

Pull down all the tapestries

That puzzle is kind of a pain. I even forgot what to do my 2nd time playing.

Level 1 hint:

Spoiler:

Do you have a red gem? Do you remember where you found it?

Level 2 hint:

Spoiler:

You found it in one of the alcoves near the statues.

Level 3 hint:

Spoiler:

See what happens if you put it back where you found it.

Yeah, that puzzle was really hard, I had to look it up.

Spoiler:

The red gem is important.
