GWJ-ATX 2013: Third Monday Movies

Note that the grills are the small campsite size.

small campsite style is more chicken/burgers/dogs and less amazing steak + porkchops..

I haven't piped in yet because I probably won't know if I can come that Saturday until that Friday night Would you mind if I just showed up? (Bringing beer and food, of course) I most likely would be coming by myself.

Nope, not at all. Number of attendees was more important when I was considering just doing it at my house. Now that it's at the park, space is not an issue.

This is a tough month for me, folks, but I'll do my best to make it. I bet Bill Harris might like an invite, too.

I find your ideas intriguing and would like to subscribe to your newsletter. Who's gonna invite him? Have any of y'all met him before? I send him emails a few times a year about his blog, but I don't know him personally.

Sidebar discussion: Any good homebrew stores around here? I need about a case of wine bottles, associated corks and a corker.

Sidebar answer: Be sure to ask Anthony and Jay this question on Monday.

Who's gonna invite him?

Done. He's tentatively accepted, barring conflicts with Eli's sports schedule.

Counting Boogle as well as *Legion* and his wife, it looks like we've got at least 15 at the moment. If we just add the folks who've attend gatherings earlier this year but have not yet chimed in, we could hopefully get this up to 20 or so.

Given that everyone who's voiced an opinion has implied that "up north" is acceptable, I'm going to go ahead and name Cat Hollow Park as the gathering place. I know for a fact that it's convenient for *Legion* and MyBrainHz and it's close enough to both my house and the local HEB that procuring missing items should not be a problem.

I've decided not to spend the money to reserve the pavilion. When I called today, it was available day so it's possible that it'll be open anyway by the time we show up. More relevant, though, is that I went by there today and neither of the BBQ grills are really all that close to the pavilion so I figure we'll probably set up around one of them anyway.

The park itself includes, "restrooms, basketball, tennis, sand volleyball courts, baseball field, picnic tables, bbq grills, benches, playscape with swings, pavilion, and an 18-hole disc golf course." I know Boogle will want to hit the disc course and we'll probably bring a volleyball. My wife also suggested that if anyone had board games that didn't have paper pieces that might blow away (e.g. no Monopoly), there are plenty of picnic tables. I might also be able to dig up a kickball if we have enough people to make that interesting.

As for what picnic items to bring, make sure that you and yours are covered and then add a little extra to share if you're so inclined. I should have plenty of plates, cups, and napkins as long as you don't mind them maybe having Dora or Tinkerbelle on them. I can also bring grill tools but if anyone is a regular user of charcoal grills, please bring your briquettes and competence - I'm looking at you, Koshnika.

As noted above, there's a spreadsheet that you can use to register your attendance and indicate what you might contribute to the common pot. According to the Park Rules and Regulations, "No excessive consumption of alcohol is permitted," which I assume means that responsible consumption is allowed. That being said, no glass containers are allowed in the park so keep that in mind.

The gathering is officially from 11 to 2 in hopes that we can assemble before it gets too hot. Later in the afternoon, the pool will be open for those interested in getting a day pass. We may choose this option depending on what the group and the kids are interested in doing. Alternately, we're happy to open our house around the corner to continue the festivities in the air conditioning if the crowd isn't too big. It's a modest home (at about a dozen adults, it's time to overflow onto the back porch) but it does have Rock Band as well as a dining room table for the aforementioned board games.

That spreadsheet looks kind of sad.

Also, I found out that the pool will be open so I modified the information post to list that as an option. I'm not sure exactly how much day passes are but they're very reasonable if I recall correctly.

Updated my entry for the Google doc! someone bring drinks. =)

The forecast for Saturday is a high of 79 and a 20% chance of rain. Remember that you're primarily responsible for food/drink for you and yours. You may also want to bring some portable seating. I'll bring plates/cups/plastic and a 6-foot folding table to use as a sideboard. I think that we've also got a volleyball around somewhere and I'm sure Boogle will want to play a round of disc golf.

Quicksilver, I will definitely bring funkiehen if she isn't too sick (she getting over a bad chest flu) but if she can't come, we need to invite you over, its been toooo long.

EDIT: I'll be there regardless.

I'm likely bringing cookies to share. Presently on a Reese's peanut butter with chocolate chip kick, but I'll entertain requests. I'm also bringing sidewalk chalk and bubbles in case the playscape gets 'boring', 'cause that's how I roll.

Souldaddy, please come and bring your Lovely. When's the last time you've been mobbed by Grumplings? You know you miss it.

You and I will get along swell.

Could someone bring a spare seat for me; I didn't bring one in my luggage.

Pretty sure we have an extra chair. We'll bring whatever we've got. And rocket balloons.

Leaving here in a few minutes to head down; see ya all in ~3hrs.

I will be coming but my lovely is sadly ill

Thanks everyone for a great time and good food. Now that I'm back in my "hotel" I wish I had stayed longer to hang out after; I'm bored out of my skull now. Looking forward to making another one soon.

Just a heads up, Prometheus opens on June 8th; which just happen to be a three day weekend for me, score!

I'm down with some GWJ Prometheus action @ the Alamo for the June get together.

A big thumbs-up to Grumpicus for another successful exercise in herding cats and making a meetup happen.

Nice that we got a good sized group this time around, and the weather patterns didn't conspire to chase us away.

EVENT STUFF
Tickets are $15, buy them right away if you plan on going. We can meet up at the site if anyone else is attending.

Unbeknownst to me, my amigo who moved down from OKC a month before me has already acquired us tickets for this event, so see you there.

I'm out for the next two weekends, d'oh.

Yes that was my suggestion and, I'm going to have to bail on it. That is the weekend I fly home and drive my car back.

Edit: I'm open to modifying this plan. I'm not going to leave it up in the air for _too_ long but feedback is welcome.

June: It's time to start avoiding the heat. So how about somewhere air conditioned and serving cold brew? How about if that brew was made on-site? Per Tigerbill's (I think) suggestion, this month we'll check out Prometheus. We've all been to the Drafthouse before, so I thought that this time, we'd check out Flix Brewhouse. Watch this thread for an update when tickets go on sale; I suspect it will be on 6/2.

I will wait until we go to see it. Though I'm not a rush-out-opening-weekend moviegoer very often anyway.
