I suck at ESPN NFL2K or why I hate JohnnyMojo :)

Ok, here I am thinking I have finally picked up on this game after a series of frustratingly humiliating defeats at the hands of the Xbox when I play JohnnyMojo and the Denver Broncos. As Johnny is beating me like a TomTom Drum I am quickly becoming Mr. "I hate this game and I hope my house suffers a massive electrical surge". His kind guidance falls on deaf ears as murderous rage towards the incompetent Carolina Panthers builds... They cant seem to pass, they cant seem to run - they certainly cant guard against the deep pass or the short pass or the mid range pass or against grandma from the stands taking the ball for 75yds and a touchdown. No one should consistently make 3rd and 18 catches - is there some secret to this - tips - should I just run my QB towards the end zone as I let all my receivers run down the field and then throw into quadruple coverage and come up with the immaculate reception - not once, but at least 6 times.... I dont mind losing, but I hate to feel incompetent. No I dont really hate JohnnyMojo and the man's got crazy skills in the game, but I do need tips or some idea of why I stink at this game.

Because you play like I do?

I''m doomed then?

Abandon all hope.

I love it when my name appears in the subject of a thread.

My only real suggestion to you Spy is that once you got behind you changed your gameplan and started throwing almost every down. Looking at the stats of your League game, you rushed 16 times and passed 12 times. That is about right if you have a back like Davis and a QB like Delhomme. When you played me, once I scored you passed 2x as much as you ran. In that situation, it is much easier to defend against you.

The other suggestion I would make is that Davis is a power runner. Run him between the tackles, not to the outside. If you want to do a toss or sweep, then sub in Foster because he has better speed to get to the outside. Grumpicus rammed Jamal Lewis down my throat by changing the controller configuration and putting Shoulder Charge on the triggers as opposed to Juke L/R on the trigger. Davis is a similar runner to Lewis, so that config change might help.

Lastly, I would suggest lining up in more three receiver sets and running out of them. If you can get the defense to put 5-6 DBs on the field, then Davis is like a juggernaut. Unless you are playing against a stout defense (which Denver does not have), Davis eats nickelbacks for breakfast.

So I guess it''s a good thing I let you beat up on me last night Spynavy?

Hope that helped your confidence!

Also JMJ, what a great tip! It was tough for me to use the tools for a running back and never actually thought about changing the controller config!

Hopefully i will be able to actually score my next game!

Clarification: Given that Jamal is a power runner, I use Alternate Configuration A to put Stiff Arm on the triggers instead of Juke. Of course, I do love the shoulder charge - but I still have to hit ""Y"" to use it.

Johnny makes some very good points there. I think the key thing is some people get down by a couple touchdowns and go to air for the rest of the game. It''s so easy to defend against and you''re very likely to toss an INT eventually. Every game I win shows I had a solid running threat going the entire time, at least enough to keep them guessing.

Falling into the ""Must launch air attack"" mentality is usually the kiss of death in this game. I should know, I lost 52-7 because of it. This game really works when you use your team''s abilities instead of forcing your playing style on whatever team you happen to be using. Try to think like the team''s head coach because that''s how the team has been developed. It''s very tough to stay disciplined enough to stick to your guns when you''re down 14 points, and maybe the 5 minute quarters are partially to blame for this. I remember thinking that I didn''t have enough time to stick with my game plan, and abandoned it outright. So, instead of losing respectfully, I got trounced.

I on the other hand, have stuck to my pathetic excuses for game plans and have lost 7-14 and 7-10. Quite respectible, my suckiness.
I''m still 0-2. But I have my self respect, and you can''t take THAT from me, you jackals.

But I have my self respect, and you can''t take THAT from me, you jackals.

Sounds like a challenge... you KNOW I''m going to try. =)

I hate giving away my strategies, but since I don''t seem to be able to pass all that well anyways here are a few things I do. Note use these at your own risk.

One key for me in the passing game is to watch the safeties. Basically if they split out wide you aren''t going to have much chance of hitting an outside deep pass, but a crossing route or a post would be perfect. But if they stay in the middle of the field it''s time to hit Timmy Dwight on that fly or flag pattern! Also putting a bit of touch on those outside long passes seems to be a good idea while across the middle you usually need to muscle the ball in there, although sometimes you need to float it over a linebacker but that''s just a decision you''ll have to make on the fly. Oh and also use the hot routes judiciously if you see them in a defense you think could be exploited by going across the middel then adjust your receivers route accordingly. Anyways that''s all i''ve got hopefully it helps you guys out.

Thanks for the tips - I will try the config change as well. Demiurge soundly trounced me again today :). Anyhow, I didnt realize that when you exit you lose voice so sorry about that Demi - I think I cut you off mid sentence.

- Spy (still suckin)

Our game was pretty close Spy. Except for that 94-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown I had, it would have been a nailbiter!

No worries, Spy.

For the record, Spy doesn''t give his defense enough credit. we were scoreless at the end of the first half because his D was so tough.

Ready to play again Demi?

Hehe, that''s the spirit. =) Let me finish lunch here (I suck at cooking =) and then I''ll be ready.

I am the main chef while I am off - so I feel your pain. Tonight we are having Tropical chicken or Chicken with lots of Soy sauce lime and Ginger tossed on it.

This sucks sitting here at work and having you guys talking about playing games right now... I thought this was Gamers With Jobs not Gamers Sitting At Home This Very Moment Playing While I''m At Work?

Oh I have been living the life the last 2 days - sporadically accomplishing the honey-do list while squeezing in mucho game time. I even stripped part of my deck after Demi trounced me - someone had to pay for my humiliating defeat and it was my decks turn to suffer.

Hmm...I should be home in about 90 min....can I get a game with the winner?

Hail Marys every down!! I kicked Swampyankees`ASS!!! Always go for it on 4th down too!

As an 11 year old I take offense to that. Wait...

Demurge was kind enough to build my ego and let me win one. I Johnny online beating someone playing Tampa. I was safe because he was already playing so I could sneak away and cower in my office.

Yeah, that''s it... build your ego. Who else needs more self esteem? I''m handing out wins like they''re sugar free.

Oh and by the way I was wearing my new Gamers with Jobs T-shirt which apparently boosts luck by at least 20% - that and sacks :).

I think I''m going to do the dishes, get my jogging done and then pop onto Live for some Football while I wait for the CS source beta to launch. I''ll be on Live at around 6:30 CST!
