Firefall Catch-All

Will there be any kind of open-world PvP? Arenas are great, but the world seems more alive if you can get into fights.

Yes, but not any time soon, so says the devs on their forums.

And as for things yet to come, they just mentioned on their forums that a character wipe is coming soon, but no official schedule is set, so don't get used to what you have.

Dimmer and I met up tonight for some wandering - found what look to be dormant PVE sites.
(well, i'm not good at screenies yet - can't get them to show in the post so you just get links)

Dimmer engaged one of the locals in traditional dance: (pardon the UI stuff - this is one of my first forays into screenshots)

and here's the "Asian Engineer" (struck me as funny - like the "Asian Reporter Trisha Takanowa" in Family Guy)

So much potential for fun in this game, but a ways to go yet I think. There's not much to do and exploring only gets you so far, but I haven't tried PVP yet.

Have Red 5 said when they plan to expand their beta? Really itching to try this out and like others, I've been registered with them for a long time and never got an invite.

Uh, define expand. They just made provisions for tripling their current user base by giving everyone in the beta 2 invites. They've done this once before since I've been in. It's just that no other goodjer but me (that I can tell) was active (even just checking threads helped, according to the community manager) on their forums earlier so nobody else got the early invite (mostly based on forum activity, with some randoms thrown in) and so it's gonna be a slow burn to get all 75+ goodjers in who've posted in this thread.

They will randomly do some more invites sometimes, but they never say very far in advance as they like to keep addressing server stability before dumping too many new people into the game. Last time they did 10 or 20k direct invites. You can also follow @Grummz (CEO of Red 5) and he randomly puts out a tweet to people for a small amount of invites (~10).

EDIT: There seems to be a lot of people giving out beta keys for a little bit of effort in the off-topic portion of the Firefall forums if anybody really wants to in.

Almost got in myself with a clever joke, but ended up not qualifying for a lack of posts in the forums overall. I find it difficult to post in a forum for a game that I have yet to play.

yeap, I want to play and all, but I can't will myself to wade through an unknown forum to hunt an invite to a game that I'm going to play anyway in a couple of months. I'll sit around here over this rock, tap my fingers and wait for open Beta.

Doob-doob-bee roop

Exactly, that's what annoyed me about the idea of beta invites being weighted to forum participants. It doesn't lead to very inspired posting to be sure.

I agree. I get that Red 5 is trying to weigh invites towards people who are most likely to be engaged and helpful participants, but being verbose isn't the same as being insightful (or interested, really).

That said, I'm not totally sure what metrics would be better for getting a pool of committed beta testers who are interested in giving feedback.

Whoah, whoah, whoah, whoah. Useful beta players? Insightful participants? I'm all about shaking my sweet booty for some looty in-game.

Yeah, "in-game". Right.

Had some interesting experiences this afternoon. I was playing my engineer, who is high enough and equipped enough that I can pretty effectively solo tiny thumpers, when the random people who hang out to help for XP dropped their own thumper in my turreted and healing stationed area. Their [silent] idea apparently was that we'd alternate. It worked really well, but they wouldn't group up so we could just all benefit from the thumper (I'm almost certain you don't split the resources). At first I was pissed when they dropped their thumper in my obviously occupied area but it worked well for a fairly long time even with no communication. I'm pretty sure they were new as well as there wasn't an air of "spawn camping" so much as an incommunicative multi-lingual implied cooperation that just worked. This probably reflects more on the currently somewhat awkward grouping mechanics. Having it all heavily typed in a frantic FPS setting makes things clunky and overlooked.

A moderately high-leveled, attentive engineer *waves* with a couple of Devastators is a hugely effective combination. Ask Cymbrogi, he was trying Dev and just the two of us cakewalked tiny thumpers. I'm just shy of buying the light thumper, which is my priority right now. I should have done it prior rather than buying some 1000 crystolite blue nanoprints as it'll quickly pay off.

Okay I am in this beta and played a couple times but I'm kinda like this...

So having those ingame commands will help but I think playing with friends would help a hell of a lot more. I saw the thing about giving out Beta invites but I had no idea how to even access them.

...and now I feel like a total jackass because all youse guys want into the beta and I'm herp-derping around trying to solo and understand wtf is going on.

I'm Benticore in the game, btw...

mrtomaytohead wrote:

I tend to forget to jump out of first person mode to take shots... But at least I remember to use the no UI print screen button.

Just realized I missed this earlier. I have a strong preference for using Steam screenshots, but I'd love to know how to suppress the UI when doing so, if possible.

Benticore's in? Alright, when's our next playtime? There's a special Tribes setup tonight, but I'm actually re-interested in playing again thanks everyone's thoughts. I'll say the night that I played left me pretty cold. Sure the gunplay's there, but I didn't connect with anything else. Party might help!

Cyrax's in too? I need to catch up - I added Benticore to my friends list - what's your handle in-game Cyrax?

I'm Cymbrogi to make it easy to add me if you want. I've found it is more enjoyable at the lower levels being grouped, but not sure once you get to lvl 8 like Liquid that grouping is as important. As MrTomaytohead said earlier, it does sound like a character wipe is coming sooner rather than later and with patch days on Thursdays now (I think), we might all be low level again after tomorrow.

Fixed for poetic rhymingness. Might even be iambic now.

Do we have a Steam group?

Ive actually been in for about 2 months now but the game was unplayable for me till late last month...

Not that I know of, might be a decent idea.

So you have invites!

First, a short note for those not yet in the beta:
If you want to spend a little extra time and effort for a beta invite, visit the game's forum and look in the off-topic section as a lot of people are doing random giveaways / contests for invites.

And now, for those actually in the beta:

Beta Invites:
To access your invites to hand out, log in on the firefall site and go to:
https://beta.firefallthegame.com/inv...

Can also be accessed by clicking the invites 'tab' at https://beta.firefallthegame.com/

Useful Beta Forum Threads:
in-game commands.
friends list guide.

Taking Screenshots via in-game method:
Standard shot: print screen
Screen without UI: shift+ print screen

save location: my pictures/firefall

Current Planned Patch Day:
Every Thursday. That's right once a week. Earlier in the week if possible. It used to be Wednesday, but has been changed due to some new bug fixing practices noted in the linked thread.

I hope that covers most people's questions. I may repost this once a week or so if people keep getting confused.

Oh, I almost forgot I fired off a UI-inclusive screenshot yesterday as I was showing a terrrorclaw to respect engineers. Again, this is from my laptop so graphics are dialed down.

For folks who are in the beta, I've created a UserVoice to make it easier to get in-world screenshots from the front.

If you like it, I'd appreciate your upvotes - it's here.

Add me to friends list Andon I'm primarily playing Medic and Engineer so far.

LiquidMantis was kind enough to join me in an experiment, to see how far two engineers could get into the Melding (since repair stations heal damage, I'd hoped we could leapfrog into an interesting / unintended space).

The damage you take from the Melding ramps up pretty quickly, it turns out. We got 30-40 yards in, but our second repair station required constant maintenance to avoid exploding, and was just barely keeping up with healing the damage we were taking.

It was good science, but didn't end well for the test subjects.

lady luck has frowned on me for this one...

For those looking to get into the beta, keep checking your email inboxes.

We've invited a whole bunch of new players, and will continue to do so for the rest of the week so please make sure to help people out where you can

I really want to play this, but it's horribly dog slow on the only machine I have available right now. Definitely not a Blizzard game

True, but I believe they've put zero effort into optimizing this so far. Hopefully when they get to that point, it'll work reasonably well on lower-spec machines.

On the contrary, if you read the patch notes, they've been doing things here and there just about every patch I've been in to see. I used to get 10-15 FPS in Copa, now I'm nearly at parity with the rest of the game world 40+ (this is also up) one med + shadows, vegetation, and increased draw distance.

Don't forget to report in over here for issues with bad framerates.
