Firefall Catch-All

Is there a solid release date for this? I want to play, but if the open beta is gonna take months then I'll rather start earlier than sit the wait out.

Found a neat waterfall, off at the top of a small mountain. Mrtomaytohead celebrated our discovery through dance.

LiquidMantis, looking suitably broody up by the border of the Melding, at dusk.

Yeah you guys make this sound awesome, I'll take a beta invite if any are left. Also was amused to find the extra credits video on firefall making me even more interested.

For those of you with beta access, you should be able to see this thread about in-game commands. It should prove useful. Along with the friends list guide.

All the rest of the threads I had flagged as useful via the watch command on their forums seem to be outdated.

Back-to-back 100% thumpers, on a ferrite node, with a pick-up group of a dreadnought, two engineers, and me as an assault.

We had things so locked down that our dreadnought did nothing but /dance and target for the turrets, for a couple thumpers in a row.

I'm really liking those bright colours and the images in the far distance. Can you travel to those areas I'm seeing wayyyyyyyy back there?

It's like leading a horse with a carrot, but the horse never gets the treat, he only gets to stare longingly at it like a light at a dark tunnel's end. Or perhaps it's that kid who eats something delicious in front of you and no matter how many times you ask to try some, she turns you down and makes a point to eat it in front of you.

Spoiler:

How torturous these pictures are.

Yes, though when I tried earlier there were a few too many powerful beasties in the way.

Sorry - I'm digging what I've seen so far, and am happy to share. If it's really a bummer for folks I'll refrain.

It's no bummer for me. I love these pics and seeing what your thoughts are on the game. If you wanna keep posting please do so.

No, please continue. Every new picture just makes me wanna play more .

I apparently joined Sep 4, 2010... and have not received a beta invite. If anyone happens to find themselves with an extra beta code and has no idea what to do with it, I'm sure I could give it a good home.

Well, I'm all out of invites now. Sent one to a friend and one to a goodjer. Enjoy!

Also, if you can see it in the game, you can get there. Everything else is hiding behind the melding. A lot of times, it will take a while and some creativity, but you can make it to just about every high place in the current game world.

Dimmer, getting 100% thumpers without it being damaged at all, looks like the AI went dumb on you. This has been a big problem in the past, but is mostly worked out. Unfortunately, when the servers get overloaded, it seems the AI is one of the first things to go.

I'd love me an invite, if anyone wants to be my best friend.

Spoiler:

Serves me right for not checking GWJ over the weekend!

Possible, though it didn't feel glitched (I should clarify that the Dreadnought wasn't dancing for those). We were definitely getting swarmed, but the engineers kept the area immediately around the thumper clear while the Dreadnought and I kept the waves from making it there in significant numbers (they were definitely spawning in, and all the ones I saw & engaged were heading towards the thumper). It may be the case that having two turrets & repair stations near the thumper was confusing the AI targeting, though.

In any event, fun times.

One of my groups yesterday found a good spot in the middle of trees. We ended up doing that in the dark no less. It was one of the larger thumpers and things got pretty crazy. LOTS of mob attention with very limited visibility and crappy lines of fire made for a very frantic run of it. Good payout though.

I didn't sleep well last night - sick spouse for the most part - so I was up at 4:30 am checking out the action. I switched to a recon frame and just roamed around. There's a network southwest of the home base that I found, plus I found a tunnel with a NPC inside (who just stared at me when I came close). I think that suggests there is more content in the planning stages.

I also got into a few "local events" which comprised of crashed thumpers - gather up resources and fight off Chosen - and running across a Chosen dropship. Didn't do much else as there didn't appear to be too many folks on (go figure). I think once I get more comfortable with the game, I'll hop into PVP.

The fun part for me is that this is definitely a beta - not one of those "we think we are about ready for launch, come help us stress test 2 weeks before launch" kind of things. I hope we can get more of you folks in to see what's there, because what's there is pretty cool. Not mind-blowing or earth-shattering, but impressive for what is aimed to be a F2P title.

I haven't seen anything about how they are going to make money at this thing - other than what we've all read already.

Liquidmantis - I figured out gliders: HOLD down the spacebar after you launch in the air, steer with the mouse. You can even let let off spacebar, then hold it again to redeploy the glider so long as you haven't hit ground or solid objects.

Yeah, I was doing that and I had it work once. For whatever reason when I was trying yesterday I just divebombed. I just did it again today though and it was working.

You might want to just jump into pvp as the matchmaking will put you into groups with people of similar level as your highest level battleframe for your character first, and then maybe a few other parameters. it goes 1-5, 6-10, 10-15, or something like that. If you level up past 5, and try to jump into pvp, you'll likely get destroyed since people will have up to lvl 10 gear / abilities. So even if you are currently using a level 1 medic frame, but have a level 7 engineer frame, you will be placed in a match with people according to your level 7 frame.

Ah, good to know. I don't think I've cracked 5 on the assault yet, which is all I've played other than this morning's adventure in recon.

Here are some shots I snapped today. This is on my 560m laptop, so I've got the graphics turned down to keep my framerate high.

As I mentioned up thread, I'm no good at running around solo as a dreadnaught or medic. I keep those 2 frames for groups and/or PVP.

They are also trying to balance the game so you level quicker in PVP, and I think that's mostly the case as long as you are placing in the middle of the pack. You are supposed to get more resources over time in the open world.

Got on top of that huge outcropping near Copacabana this afternoon. Found a placeholder tent (couldn't enter, and no NPCs around, but clearly that's at least part of what's planned here).

Looks like I registered on 9/7/2010. Oh well, I'll just keep watching this thread and drooling.

9/4/2010.

Never posted, rarely visited. Thinking about it, I don't think I really visit any forums other than GWJ with any regularity. Who has the time?

Ah yes, Mushroom rock.

Here's a view looking at it at night with some melding lightning in the background:

I tend to forget to jump out of first person mode to take shots... But at least I remember to use the no UI print screen button.

That reads like Sonic Youth lyrics.

Will there be any kind of open-world PvP? Arenas are great, but the world seems more alive if you can get into fights.

Can you see me waving? I'm getting on a jet plane! I don't care when I'll be back again. Oh lord, take to Alien-Ravaged Brazilllllll.
