A Game Of Dwarves - Strategy & Management, Hooray!

DF is still my long lost love. I keep coming back to it, only to realize that it hasn't really changed in a couple years. Much like Minecraft. It feels too much like going through the motions now.

I am looking forward to this Game of Dwarves, if only to re-kindle my love for the mystique of delving deep and forging precious things through the sweat of my brow.

It's like someone is making me a joint. Like a really nice joint.
But that joint, it has some coke in it. And soon I'll be back on coke, eating kittens, killing goblins in elaborate traps, digging down to Hyades itself.
This is not a healthy relationship I have with DF.

That was exactly the bug that bit me -- a heavily populated Vagabondo tram track going around a traffic circle.

I have learned to avoid double buses for the same reason. The buses make a turn when there is only room for a single bus, then their second half stays out in the intersection for a long time. Multiply this by 15 buses in 15 intersections and you can snarl the traffic for an entire city.

I sure hope the Dwarves dont get drunk off their asses and leave them behind. The hallways could clog up!

How have I only now found out about this thing!

Two gameplay videos from the Yogscast:

couldn't finish these video...These 2 gentleman make my ears bleed.
I am however, really pleased with what I saw minus the volume.

Anyone still interested in this? (Were any of you ever interested in this...?).

Well, I've been looking forward to it, and the release date sure is fast approaching, but I've been reading.... mixed opinions shall we say.

RPS advises to hold off and wait for reviews, but if I hold off, I don't get the pre-order bonus Ale Trees... what to do? Oh and by the way- ale is DLC only? In a game about dwarves? Tsk tsk.

Well, I was interested, until the launch DLC.

I was interested, but between the launch dlc, the RPS opinion and Gnomoria my interest has diminished. I'll let it get a few patches and probably pick it up during the inevitable steam sale.

You know, I didn't realize this was only a ten dollar game. The launch DLC isn't as annoying, when it's that cheap. Hmm.

Yeah, they just dropped the price from $20. Paradox realizes their smaller projects need attractive price points (see: Magicka).

Me, well, I'm waiting to see how it turns out before diving in.

You know, what the heck. It's ten bucks, it's Paradox, I liked the trailer. Preordered.

+1 good enable!

I want it so I bought it. I started playing Dwarf Fortress again but I got a little impatient with the interface. A watered down version of DF would be nice :).

I did the same, except I played a couple rounds of the Towns demo instead. It didn't compel me to pay for it, but it'll hold me over until tomorrow.

I actually tried to play Towns hoping they polished it since the last time I played (got it on GG) . I got a decent impression but I'll abandon it because A Game of Dwarves comes out when I get home and my steam download run at a speedy 5.5MB/s(my max is 74mbps or 9.25MB/s). It should take me at most 10-15 minutes to download and because I can control my PC from my phone I can download it as soon as it comes out.

I can't wait to try this game it looks like fun :).

PS: Malor will still beat me with his symmetric 250mbps connection .

So, how is it? Filthily enable me!

Still waiting for the unlock, but I've got meetings and then Forza Horizon should be here any time.

25 minutes to go. my internet might be fast but it doesn't travel though time yet.

edit : I and Everyone on the steam forum went crazy because the release was about an hour late but it works now . Just restart steam if you don't see it. BTW my download rate was only 2.2MB/S ( I was busy doing other things anyways)

So, any impressions? I read some over on the Bay 12 (Dwarf Fortress) forums, but I would rather hear some GWJer thoughts.

Don't let my record deceive you I went AFK a lot yesterday (part of the reason my game play hours are inflated). My general opinion is that you should wait. I haven't got enough play time to get a full impression because I'm only through the second mission which is practically a second tutorial.

In terms of game play it's pretty easy and intuitive. The levels are mine-crafty (block rather than block/floor sandwich in DF). The mechanics seem ok but the game feels a little over simplified. The game kind of holds your hand for the first missions which is generally good because it teaches you the game mechanic. I'm still not sure what I'm doing wrong with the trap setting quest.

The fact you can buy/sell stuff is fairly useful. I didn't do much combat at all. There is no voice over but the text isn't too long and too involved .In terms of polish I'd say it looks good. I didn't have any serious technical problem but Kergguz said his game kept crashing.

If $10 is your impulse price, you can probably give it a shot. After finishing the first two missions (tutorials), I'll keep going but I'm not sure I'll make it to the end. If your more of the $4 variety, you're probably safe in waiting, too. (I.e. You're not missing out on awesomeness.)

What did the DF crowd think? Any general reaction from Bay 12?

I was surprised by the generally positive (if lukewarm) reception the DF crowd is giving the game post release. The main points:

* cute graphics but the user interface could be better
* there are some problems navigating between z-levels, especially when mining
* the AI isn't great
* the game is pretty slow - takes a long time to do anything
* they're wary of how much of a DLC machine the game will likely be

Overall, I think they're saying the designing and decorating aspects are pretty fun, but the game is a bit bland and not super polished. At the same time, they acknowledge that it's $10 and weren't really expecting much more out of the game.

RPS Review:

Sorry. Look, I’m know this Wot I Think isn’t spilling over with my usual energy. Let me be honest: I am not really enjoying writing about A Game Of Dwarves. I didn’t really enjoy playing it. It didn’t ever draw me in to what was going on. I didn’t care about the dwarves, or the project of building and digging. It’s not that it’s a dreadful game, no, that’s not it at all. It’s fine. It just that it’s a game without enough of any of the resources a management game actually needs. It’s lacking something vital: the matrix of story, activity, and presentation just left me cold. I didn’t really care about seeing more of the game, and there was no satisfying consequences for having looked after my dwarves properly. Perhaps it needed more things pinging out as having been unlocked, or perhaps the discovery of things in the depths of the game needed to have more magic to it. And the pace of it doesn’t help – to be left waiting for something to happen because the the dwarf you need to do something is having a nap does not make for great videogame time. And that happened regularly: I hit “fast forward time” just so that I could get through watching the AI sleep.

So far I'm finding this pretty tame, and the RPS write up sums up my thoughts. I'm prepared to give it another couple of hours but if it doesn't grab me soon it could get consigned to the pile. I never really seem to have any interesting decisions to make, unless you count deciding what sort of fruit tree to plant interesting.

I'm addicted, and you need to up your dwarf pop as fast as possible that gets it going faster, trade and more dwarves.

I haven't played much this since release, but I'm a fan of Tekkor's LP vids:

So any personal views on this game?

I have been watching the LPs as recommended but the LPs are being made so slowly that I have no idea of the pacing of the game.

Basically I am DF player but sometimes I just want something simpler.

Will this be a good lite version of DF?

Pros? Cons?
