Anyone feel like tossing me a referral?

If you PM me your email I will send a referral code through the website, Kannon.

Thanks for the offer, Krev got me hooked up, though.

Make sure to join the GWJ chat channel. I get lonely in there sometimes.

So does anyone have a scoop on what is going on with Goonswarm Jita attack business? Read the article about it on The Verge and am curious for more as a former player.

So, Goonswarm's Jita Burns campaign. The article from The Verge pretty much sums it up rather well. The Mittani was banned for 30 days following commentary at an EVE Unleashed panel, lost his spot on the CSM after resigning the chairmanship. Most folks think that CCP overreacted, given that he publicly apologized and made good with the guy who was really just trolling anyway.

So, they got organized. Many, many freighter gank fits were positioned ahead of time, and they've been wandering around killing any and all freighters plus many other ships who were foolish enough to wardec the Goonfleet. It's worth pointing out that Hulkageddon V will be kicking off on the heels of this, which makes this next bit rather important.

See, recently Goonfleet and their allies managed to establish Sov in the majority of systems where Technitium is mined. Why such a big deal? Well, Hulks are why. Roughly 40% of the material cost to build a hulk is in Tech. So, who controls the Tech, effectively controls the price of Hulks. And they're getting ready to blow up hundreds of them.

tl;dr: Goons are doing their thing in EVE. Nothing to see here, move along.

Done and done. Man, I'd be lost in the fog without you lot.

On the bright side, Eve is a really great example of how _not_ to have the starting UI set up. And I play roguelikes! Jebus.

Also, my paranoid nature seems to be a decent fit for the game, so far.

Up to my first real frigate in the mining/manufacturing career agent. It was the first one I tackled, figured the military ones should wait until I had an actual ship... (Yes, I did remember to insure it. Went for platinum since that'd buy a replacement with the payout, which seemed like a decent idea.)

The skills are weird. I like the skill-based systems, I always have, and it's a natural fit for an MMO. But man, it doesn't tell you, or give you anything to do with them. Have an afterburner! No, you don't have the skill for it, why would you?

(Also, seriously, expanded cargo holds slow you down, and reduce your HP? So, freighters are huge, slow, and _squishy_? In a game where PVP isn't toggle-able? Who thought that was a good idea, design-wise? Or does it balance out later in the game?)

No, I don't think it balances out for haulers. They're slow and vulnerable alone, and shouldn't make unescorted trips through low or null sec. And certain times a year, even Empire space isn't safe On the plus side, they can carry a massive amount of inventory.

That fact alone though, makes haulers indispensable. Dont go to war without those ships...ditto on salvage and mining ventures.

I wouldn't say that's entirely the case though; eventually you can get a stealthed hauler. Also, freighters take a hell of a lot to kill.

Well, Freighter can't actually fit any modules so they don't suffer from the structure penalty of Cargo Expanders. It's not really a big deal on Industrials though because if you do tank them it's usually a shield tank, the raw structure HP doesn't matter.

Also, if you're new to EVE my one tip is to try PvP sooner rather than later. Don't quit the game before 1) you've joined a corp and 2) tried PvP because I honestly wouldn't expect anyone to want to keep playing long term without both of those.

Wrong - I've been in since '05 and only appear on 5 killmails as an aggressor - and all of those were structures.

Woo, bigger ship. Have the skill to fly it cooking tonight. (Catalyst) Which after I finish the last agent for the tutorial mission set, looks like it will make a fine exploration ship. Scanner, savager (Which should be done when I get up), and still have room for guns. Nifty. (I will be sad to have only a tiny drone bay, though. The Imicus, with a long-range railgun and a couple of scout fliers is hilarious.)

Quick question: The skillbooks for archaeology are... a mite expensive. The scanning and exploring is quite fun, I'm just curious if it's worth the ISK to pick up the skill if I'll be mostly hunting in high-sec until I've got a bit more in the bank to handle losing a large ship or two.

Otherwise, I'd focus on the gravity anomalies and strap a few mining lasers to it. Either way, blowing up NPCs and mass looting!

Ah, well I still think people should try PvP because they won't know if they enjoy it until they do.

How not to do it though:
1) Borrow someone else's ships in the interest of time
2) Notice that the ships, despite being named 'cheap', are faction / deadspace fit
3) Proceed to welp

For some reason paying for a ship after you've lost it feels much worse.

You might be able to get a gift/loan package from another GWJer for initial skill books. Trying out lots of stuff to see what you really find fun is essential in a sandbox like this. I think most of the money-making from Archaeology is research related. So if you have friends doing research, they may buy what you find, or the market might. You can also set yourself up as a research and do your own science. That path takes a long time to skill-up, but can also be pretty satisfying and profitable.

You can work the research angle until you're making ISK passively with R&D data cores, but it takes a lot of mission grind: http://www.tentonhammer.com/eve/guid...

I'm currently still fairly "low level". I do mostly exploring. My plan is to attempt to earn enough cash to start Gas Mining and then make boosters. Anyways, I've been making a fair amount of money from exploring. Whenever I discover a RADAR site, it's usually worth about 10 million ISK after the bounties and the loot from the actual RADAR site.

Unfortunately, they can be hard to find. And I always find ways to spend that money, despite trying to save up for the Gas Harvesting skill book.

Yeah I'll hook him up with a proper welcome package, sorry for the delay - my bad. PM me your character name Kannon.

I'd have spotted Kannon up yesterday, but he's still on a trial account.

Pretty cool short video

I have no idea what I just watched.

It looked like the were bubble warping (?) into groups of enemies that then unloading their smart bombs. Smart bombs are powerful, short ranged bombs centered on your ship. Essentially, think of an Arcane Blast spec'd Mage from WoW. And all those little dots you saw were actually smaller enemy ships.

I think the technical term is 'a bunch of n00bs getting pwned'.

The group of battleships were equipped with a large array of short-ranged AoE weapons, 'smart bombs'. Which are neither smart, or bombs. They probably all used the same kind of smart bomb, probably the kind that does Explosive damage (probably the least used of the 4 damage types in Eve, and therefore probably the least defended against.) Since they knew what damage type to stack against, they weren't taking any real damage from their own AoE (which normally would be shredding anyone nearby, friend or foe).

So, all they had to do was arrange to get into close range with as many opponents as possible at once. I've seen this kind of attack before, and when it gets pulled off, its literally awesome. I've seen videos showing a fleet warping in on top of a smart bombing fleet, and the attacking fleet just melts away, rather like dropping crushed ice into boiling water. When it works, this tactic is brutal.

And I've killed battleships trying to pull this, when it fails to come together, they are toast. No range on their weapons, no real defenses, we just orbited outside the range of their smart bombs, pinned them in place and killed them.

Scouting, learn it, live it, love it, or die.

i hate you guys...I was watching the thread...and now I resubscribed.

I've been trudging along, working on my exploration. I was making some money, but barely fast enough to keep up with my skill upgrades. This morning I decided to start training Battlecruisers. However, I knew that it would be a while before I could afford one. I needed about 53M ISK to afford the cruiser I wanted. Unfortunately, the most I had owned at any one time was about 25M ISK and I was currently at 5M ISK. So I figured it would be a while before I would actually be able to afford a Battlecruiser. Then I struck gold. I had just moved over to some low sec exploring and stumbled upon a LADAR site with some sweet, sweet Amber Cytoserocin! An hour and a half later I had made 85M ISK!! WOOT!

Haha, that video was great, AnimeJ

Had a big fight last night.

Last week I was scouting some low-sec moons and came across a fully faction fit deathstar POS, which is a POS fitted more or less exclusively with guns. The modules on the tower were worth somewhere around 3-4 billion so we decided we wanted to try and nab them. On Friday we got some friends (Psychotic Tendencies) to help us reinforce the tower, so that it would exit reinforced mode during the weekend. Because we wanted to unanchor all the guns and take them we didn't incapacitate any of them, which meant that tower would be quite fearsome if the enemy brought enough POS gunners.

The tower was owned by Ethereal Dawn, an 800 man alliance who live in the Drone regions, quite far away. Because they lived so far away we weren't sure what they would bring to the fight, but we managed to get hold of an alliance mail calling for Pantheon Carriers. We suspected that they might also bring a few Supercarriers since the corporation holding the tower was also ED's main supercap corp. We later confirmed our suspicion by using locator agents to place one of their Nyx pilots far away from home and close to the target system.

Knowing that we probably couldn't get much done on our own, we decided to quickly call for some extra help and our FCs managed to persuade Wolfsbridage as well as Rooks and Kings to come along for the fun. Since the POS was located near the end of a long pipe we decided to put our main support fleet seven or so jumps out, in hopes of catching the enemy support fleet on its way there. The reason for this was that we didn't want to fight on the POS grid if at all possible.

We waited patiently for the tower to exit reinforced and for the enemy fleet to show up, but nothing came through. The tower came out of reinforced, and after 10 minutes had passed a cyno went up on the POS and five enemy Carriers jumped in. Rooks and Kings immediately responded by bridging in their support fleet as well as jumping in two triage Archons with the intent of forcing Ethereal Dawn to escalate with more capitals. ED obliged and jumped in an additonal seven Carriers, four Supercarriers and their entire support fleet.

A triage Carrier cannot, to quote Star Wars, "repel firepower of that magnitude", so the plan was for Wolfsbridage to jump in their Carriers and save the RnK Archons when they exited triage. Amazingly the Archons actually survived long enough to exit cycle (I guess RnK have their sh*t together) but there were some problems getting Wolfsbridage onto the field. When they finally jumped in they unfortunately landed outside of repair range, which sealed the RnK Carriers' fate.

During all that our support fleet was burning down the pipe to get into the fight. We jumped in a few triages of our own to keep our Battleships up under the POS gun fire, while we tried to neut out the enemy capitals as well as destroy their fighters / fighter bombers with smartbombing Battleships. We had enough to break through their spidertank and killed two Thanatoses with a Chimera retreating into the shield in 40% structure. At this point ED still had two Supercarriers far enough from the POS shield that we could attempt to bump them. Unfortunately a Nyx got bumped inside the shields, but we managed to lock down an Aeon.

We immediately jumped in six Dreads and went to work on the Aeon, who surprisingly didn't try to self destruct. It took him about five minutes to go pop, and once he did we went to work on their tower. The POS gunners decided to primary my Moros and at one point I got a bit worried that I'd die, but I managed to exit siege and get some reps. We blew up the tower, scooped the modules and that was pretty much it.

In retrospect I think the fight could've gone the other way if ED had played their cards right, but they were a bit overconfident and got a bloody nose for it

That was unbelievably cool. I feel like a starfighter right now.

If they stretched the same number of video frames out to make that a 15 minute trailer instead of 1:24 then you'd see what that fleet engagement actually looked like with time dilation in effect!
