I'm not understanding what people mean by it being faster than D3/PoE/etc... do they mean character advancement? I got a marauder to 30ish in about 10 hours of PoE.

Look at the video. The moving and fighting is faster. I've been playing some PoE, and seeing TL2 in action, I was like "Wait, did they give the character some boots of uber speed or something for the demo?"

Ok, yes, I see the running animation makes the character look faster. Is that how everyone is gauging the 'pace' of a game? Not time between mobs? I guess I'm not being critical enough of a game I believed to be vaporware until a just a while ago...

Nah, D3 was never really vaporware. Blizzard just beat their own record in the "when it's done" category.

I see what you did there...

The increased pace of the game will certainly help, along with what Scratched said. I fully expect this, Borderlands 2, and Guild Wars 2 to eat up my time (+MP) than any other game release this year, so I'm not going to sweat about more content.

I just hope that there's more content because it adds something to the game, and not simply to make it a longer game. I like to complete games, but rarely get to these days. I've certainly come to appreciate shorter, more focused games as opposed to long sprawling epics or games with lots of "filler" content simply to get the hour count up.

Don't get me wrong, I'll be getting Torchlight II Really excited for the game. I just hope they are adding all this content for the right reasons, and not because a bunch of people on internet forums complained that they blew through the first game too quickly.

With the time they've taken, I don't think I'm concerned. On the other side, there was a long time they were mum about their game, and the media that is out doesn't have long legs to stand on.

TL1 had the infinite dungeon, so if they ran out of that I've a feeling something went wrong.

TL1 was fairly simplistic though, it was a progression through 7 zones of 5 levels with a few bosses along the way. I'd say there's scope there to expand upon.

This exactly. It's the year of the 2s for me.

Are we really getting worked up about a subjective measure/comparison between two games that aren't even out yet?

And apparently we're trusting videos over someone actually playing it.

No, I'm trusting Certis, who did play TL2 (and Diablo 3 beta).

I wasn't referring to you. That was my point, I'll take Certis's word over my (or anyone's) observations from watching a video.

No, I'm trusing Certis, who did play TL2 (and Diablo 3).

Exactly. And for those of us not lucky enough to play either, we're asking for someone who has to compare them to PoE that all of us have played (that care).

the opening cinamatic is terrible but I am looking forward to the game, I am hopeful it will be good.

Calling it terrible is a bit harsh IMO, but whatever. It's just a non-gameplay trailer, which (for any game) is mostly insignificant to me.

I thought it was pretty bad too.

Hands up anyone who played TL for it's story.

Anyone?

There was a story?

It's like the guys at Runic had just seen the opening cinematic to Kung Fu Panda and said "we should totally do that".

Whatevs. The game will still be awesome. Can't wait!

A little bit "Genndy Tartakovsky-lite" but it does the job i suppose.

Yeah, I'm down with the new pets. Can't wait for this game.

Okay, seriously? NONE of you guys paid attention to the rich fiction of the original Torchlight? The way the once-prosperous town falls into ruin when the source of its prosperity turns out to cause corruption and evil: energy crisis allegory, anyone? No? Alric's parallels with Faust? Brink's tragic metamorphis-- shades of Kafka all UP in this Female Doggo-- and Syl's dramatic introduction in the beginning, only for her character to fade into irrelevance after the start of the game proper (a satiric deconstruction of "woman" in fiction as both goal and obstacle)? NOBODY else saw this? Were you guys even playing the same game?

I've seen PhD theses built on less than this paragraph. Well done.

Yup! I also read nudie mags for the articles.

The reliability of the always-on DRM of the Diablo 3 beta has only reinforced my anticipation of Torchlight 2.

QFT.

I'm playing the Diablo III beta, and that will be the end of it. I just can't be bothered to look past possibly not being able to connect (and even play alone) when I could buy 3 copies of Torchlight 2 and play them all offline with my friends for the same price. Oh well, I wasn't planning on getting D3, and the beta sealed the deal even though I know connecting to the servers issues are exactly why they're holding the open beta.

DRM issues notwithstanding, I'm still pretty hopeful for D3. Though despite the apparent differences in pace and feel of both D3 and TL2, I'm still clumping them both into the "click-click-click-loot-click" category of games. As such, I'll probably only be getting one of them at release - and it's looking more and more like TL2. Cooperative play alone pretty much sealed the deal for me, too.

I can see that but I feel that Torchlight 2 is making a mistake by releasing after D3, if they released before I feel it would have been way better for them.

I will still get Torchlight 2 but I might not get it at launch like I had planned but I am definitely getting D3.

Well no but does't mean I don't want it to have a story but the opening cinematic didn't do any good for the game even though it's not translating to the game.

I love the attitude behind this post. Deconstructionism is the fashionable style of criticism at the moment, so I'd focus on the Syl line of thought if you want to get that A+.

The infinite dungeon as Sisyphus is too easy, but if you linked it to Camus then you'll seem much cleverer.

In game news: I'm still interested in owning this game.

Coming summer 2012: http://store.steampowered.com/app/20...

Pre-purchase TL2, get TL1 for free, giftable if it's a duplicate.

who are these heathens who don't already have TL1?

Well, it's a way to distinguish them.

I just had a look at their site for other places to get it from, and (so far) all they've got is a big steam button.
