Any photographers in the house?

very cool perspective and nice and sharp! The bright back light really helps to define it. Nice

Thanks for the feedback. I was really pleased to find something to work with after initially thinking there wasn't much to take advantage of in the space.

I like this one too. I especially like the way the beams are not in parallel with the rest of the lines.

I should probably also point out a new blog I started dedicated to one thing...

A Multitude of Macrocosms

Duaoe - you have a lot of great work on that site. http://a-multitude-of-macrocosms.blo... really caught my eye of the many excellent shots there.

Thanks! I just wish I had an eye for other types of shot Unfortunately, as I tried to allude to in the description of the blog, I think I look at life as a series of very small instances (microcosms - hence the name!) so trying to see the bigger picture, as it were, is difficult for me.

With the weather finally getting better here I had a chance to try out the neutral density filters I received as a gift. It was a great way to let me do the longer exposure to bring the softness to the water. I was very pleased with the result.

Very nice! I've got a neutral density filter and I've been meaning to try this out myself but haven't gotten to it.

I have ND filters on my want list. That's a great shot!

Visited the newly renovated aquarium at the Zoo this weekend to play with the wide-angle lens the GF got me for my birthday. Since it was pouring rain we also played with the waterproof snapshot camera I picked up for our trip.
The highlight of the trip for me was this shot.

No editing. Straight out of the camera. It is now my new desktop background.

The snapshot camera performed... Meh. I'll be taking a closer look at those pics over the next few days, but there was a whole lot of digital noise beyond what could be accounted for by a cheap sensor. There's some real aggressive sharpening going on or something. Whatever it is I hope I can turn it off or I'll return the camera and just get a disposable and a zip lock baggy.

So far I'm not impressed.

I managed to get away for the week but the weather was rubbish and I wasn't able to really experiment with the camera - however, i did switch to quite a few B&W shots and I've posted a couple to my flickr.

Here are a couple:

I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi there, amateur photographer just getting into the hobby here. So I’m on nightshift over the weekend and I want to take some photos of the supermoon. Do I need some sort of lens filters when photographing the full moon directly?

I took some photos Friday night and the moon was too bright to see the surface of the moon in detail. Is there anyway to tone down the brightness? I have a Sony a55 and planning on getting a wide angle zoom lens & tripod tomorrow. Any tips would be appreciated, because I have no idea what I’m doing.

There's lots of good articles you can find with a web search including this one: http://open-window.typepad.com/blog/...

A snippet with the summary from it:

A clear view of the moon
A tripod
A long telephoto or zoom lens, i.e. 200mm or more
A timed or remote release of the shutter
A low ISO setting, e.g. 100
A moderately high shutter speed, e.g. 1/250s
A small to medium aperture, e.g. f/5.6 -f/11
Manual focusing

Just remember that even though it is nighttime shooting the Moon is almost like shooting straight into a flashlight In an auto setting the camera is going to look at the whole scene and see all that darkness so is going to want the shutter to be open long enough to let a lot of light in. Since you are interested in the detail of the moon, you don't care about the rest of the scene as much so from where you start, you'll be lowering the amount of exposure that gets to the sensor.

One other note that after you've taken the picture (and sorry I'm not familiar with the Sony) the moon may look smaller than you'd hoped in the frame. Don't forget you probably have more than enough megapixels and data in the image to crop it which will make the moon look proportionally larger in the image.

May have to try to shoot some moon shots tonight as well. I don't really have the lens for it, but I'm going to try my cheap-ass fixed 500mm and see what happens.

An Olympus camera sponsored by Orchestral Manouvers in the Dark? Nice!

I hope to shoot the moon tonight as well. Put some weight on the tripod as well if you can. A bag of sand on the leg supports work well. Shutter shake can ruin a shot. Use your self timer if you don't have a remote.
I suggest we all post our best shots after!

Haven't had much time to do anything terribly interesting with the new camera, but dear god the video is gorgeous, and the stabilization is *really* good:

Here's a .jpg straight out of the camera:

Not bad. Looking forward to doing something interesting with it.

You're a big tease, aren't you?! Just like that fake supermoon everyone was going on about. I didn't even SEE a moon over the last two nights except for the one in the mirror... and that was pretty super!

Nice work with the moon Groan. I missed the first night due to airport pickup conflicts and went out last night but didn't get much worth sharing.

Nice execution on the concept Happytime Harry. Great catch on the moment of movement of the dress and the model looking back.

Is she wearing contacts? They kinda freak me out. Otherwise a nice photo.

Yes, and I didn't want them in but whatever, she's the one paying. She's big on colors, and I did nothing in post to them.

Excellent lighting!
What was your setup?

I just got delivery of 3 stands, flash mounts and umbrellas to play with.

Now I get to play!

I'm pretty sure they are all cheap Chinese stuff but it's a starting point.

Alienbees 800 with a an octobox is the only thing on her. I have 2 other AB800s lighting the paper in the back. It's a pretty boring setup haha, there are some others at http://www.focusure.com.

I have 3 AB800s and an ABR800 (ring flash) with various softboxes, reflectors, and umbrellas.

But this is more where I got my start in photography, the studio thing is still pretty new to me.

Awesome.
I'm a little ways off before I start investing that much into my hobby studio. I've yet to make any money from it, this time around (did weddings and such a LONG time ago and decided to pick it up again and rekindle a little. Maybe do some jobs for anyone who'll let me and we'll see where it goes from there.

Is Focusure a team of photographers or just yourself?
