TERA Online (Now Free to Play) - Catch All

Its open beta so... sure why not?

The problem is that coming down the pipe is:

Secret World
Guild Wars 2
Neverwinter

All seem to have similar action combat with more in depth skill systems, look just as good in the visuals (sans an abundance of little girl's panty shots too), and don't have the animation lock issues (albeit lessened a bit with practice) TERA has.

TSW and GW2 combat is more standard fare. It's their skill systems that's different.

Neverwinter will be action oriented like TERA.

Edit: Personally TERA is a no go. Only thing that makes it somewhat tempting is the action combat.

That's pretty much what pulled me in. The story, quests and environment (although the environment looks beautiful and is massive and seamless with no wait or loading times except when on Flying mounts between cities or entering dungeon) is pretty standard fare for MMO's. The interactive combat and chained combat skills have me interested in seeing more. And if it doesn't all pan out, I've definitely spent money worse things in the past.

I will be rolling on Valley of Titans (pvp) with the other Dragongod Knightkings. I waffled for to long on my pre-order and missed name res but that is where I will be for launch and Open beta.

So apparently the month I thought was going to be pretty barren is now jam packed -- my wife just revealed she's been planning a surprise vacation for us in the middle of May. As a result, I'll be missing at least one week, maybe two, depending on when we schedule the group.

Speaking of which, when were you guys thinking? Mondays probably work best for me, but I could make Tuesdays or Thursdays work as well.

Any of those three nights work great for me actually.
Wednesday and Fridays are pretty shot for me.

I'd vote Tuesdays, if that's okay.

Tuesdays are fine. I can't do Wednesdays.

Yup, Tuesday is fine by me. So what level should we aim to be on May 1st then? Looks like the first dungeon is at level 20, but perhaps there is some fun group content before that that we should aim for to keep the leveling more reasonable?

I'm already level 8 after about 3 hours of playing. Liking the game so far.

We should probably decide on characters first, so we don't go in with too many tanks or healers.

Lets not go too nuts for May 1rst, as I would like to spend some time on my main, I don't think I could be 20 on a second toon by then (especially if I go lancer, they level on the slow side)

Downloading now. Server is Dragonfall, correct?

Gah, I am playing more betas than anything these days:
The Secret World
Path of Exile
GW2
Diablo 3

This looks promising though. I havent made my mind up on character, but thinking maybe a mystic. I'll probably dabble until I get attached. Berserker looks like it could be a winner.

I am in. Playing a Mystic named Ravenor on Dragonfall. Up to level 4 I have been impressed with the game mechanics and actually being able to avoid damage through movement.

What I've noticed is that even though you can avoid damage through movement, the enemy gets a large hitbox on you. I think there were times I was standing to the side of a monster as it was doing a forward rush attack and I still got damaged.

Also movement speed is slow during combat and dodge is limited once per 5 secs.

The game WANTS you to get hurt even if your tactics may be perfect.

Anyone starting up or has already started an unofficial guild for GWJ?

That is the core of the system. Races matter in this regard. Do I pick a small race that has a smaller hit box that is harder to target for heals but also harder for enemies to hit? Or do I take a larger race that is easier to heal and easier to hit? There are gender differences in hit boxes as well. Females are smaller hit boxes and the difference between male and female is also dependant upon race.

I found this on the forums and I believe this information was from a Korean player. I assume they wouldn't change this key aspect for the American release.

Yeah, although according to this developer post they have tried to make the hit boxes (and attack ranges) as close as possible while still maintaining the flavor of racial diversity (meaning small characters do have hit boxes a bit larger than their visual appearance, and vice versa for large characters).

Playing with a controller as a healer (I found out yesterday) also obviates the hitbox issue somewhat. Using a controller lends itself to more of an auto-lock-on kind of system. At least for heals.

Hopefully some of us can meet up this weekend and make one. All my previous joking aside though, we do need to decide on a name. I suppose if no one has something clever we can just do "Gamers With Jobs."

I'll be playing later this afternoon and then in the evening. I am Ravenor, the Mystic. I figured for 50 bucks if I get a few months of off and on playtime I will more than made my money back. The game is fun and the action combat is novel. Not sure longevity against D3, GW2, and TSW, but I have paid more and received less. YMMV.

I'm playing as well this weekend: Selitha, Slayer.

Well, Kilanash, Shazaam and I formed a guild this morning so we'd have a gchat channel. Bean having decided to guild up with other friends inspired an interim name for us:

Making a guild is super cheap so if someone comes up with a better name we can reform, but in the meantime feel free to join up with "Hookers and Blackjack."

(Selitha, Blade, and Zero.Anne should be able to invite, or none of us are around you can apply by finding us in the guild list... I think?)

(No hard feelings at all, by the way Bean -- in fact, you inadvertently led us to an excellent, if potentially temporary, name. :D)

If someone wants to get creative and make a guild emblem, the format is a 64x64 24bit BMP file. Maybe Stan with a cigar, or Bender or something? Anyway, if you post it here I'll set it up.

For me the combat is fun and different enough to carry the game, for now anyway. I'll probably play until GW2 hits.

Well, after the most long winded game patch in history I got to play Tera last night. I'm in the UK and signed up with the NA Tera to play alongside by friend in Canada, and it seems to be working out fine so far. I made a Human archer, friend an Elin(?) priest. I have to agree that the starter area was a bit of a drag, but getting past that the game is enjoyable.

I can't honestly say that it feels like it's breaking any new ground, and while it's not bad I doubt I'll continue with it past the beta. Currently my single player game of choice is Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning, and in comparison to that the combat in Tera feels like nothing special. Now, I know that's not a fair comparison of a single player game to an MMO, but it might have contributed to my being underwhelmed.

Actually I guess I'll have to eat my words. We both ended up buying the game after the second day of playing the beta

Well, I left my archer at level 16, but I played a sorcerer to 20 on another server. It seems like genuine, requires-a-group type content starts around level 18 with the first guild quests for BAMs being in that range (one located in the Oblivion Woods zone, another in the Valley of the Titans). I'd suggest that for the static group we'd probably want to aim for either the Fey Forrest to Oblivion Woods transition or the Oblivion Woods to Valley of the Titans one as a starting point (i.e., level 14 - 16 or level 17 - 19).

Any other thoughts/opinions?

Also, on the sorcerer I went pretty much the entire way in a duo with one random person or another. This game's combat is super fun in a group, so I'd be very happy just doing group questing if people don't want to level that far for the first meeting (in which case I'll just roll another class until we catch up with my archer).
