Sniper Elite V2

Sequel to the 2005 original. Looks like it's also set in WWII. The video demonstrates the new kill cam. Coming in 2012 to the PC, 360, and PS3; I didn't see mention of the PC.

It's got to be on PC. Got to be.

The developer is self funding a PC version, according to this bluesnews article.

Yes

Sniper Elite V2 at RPS

New trailer.

New Video:

I hope all the hit box and detection stuff can be turned off.

And I'm not sure how I feel about the kill cam.

I hear you. I wonder what the points are used for?

I want this to be sandboxy, but I'm not sure it's going to be. Or, maybe sandbox isn't quite the right term -- I just want to be able to choose my own path through a level, which you could do in the first game (at least what I played of it).

It looks good, but I'll try and keep my hopes low. It's Rebellion, after all. I should really get to playing the first I've had on Steam for years...but the backlog never slows.

I didn't even know this was happening! The demo just popped on Xbox Live. It feels a lot like the original. I'm pleased.

I couldn't get into the original, it felt way too rough around the edges. I don't mind bad graphics sometimes, but it felt like something out of early 2000s, and it killed the immersion for me. This looks a lot nicer though, I might give it a try.

I agree and it's such a shame that the graphics were so poor. The game mechanics themselves were very good and I think start to finish, it could take you nearly 20 hours to finish. Part of that is the slow, methodical pacing of the game, but I cannot think of another non-RPG shooter that takes so long to beat. Confession time: I never beat it, but I think it's because I got to a really difficult level, promised to get back to it, and then my savegame got deleted. Le sigh.

In other news, I totally pre-ordered this game, because:

(That and I wanted to buy this anyway so a 10% discount + the silly DLC seems worth it)

This game needs a scoring system. I want bonus points for hitting Hitler right in his stupid little mustache.

Can I get bonus bonus points for recreating this?

Demo now available on Steam (and rumors say also on consoles). This looks like a sale title for me, but damn, if that pre-order DLC is really pre-order exclusive, then that's genius marketing.

Also, you'll kill a lot of Nutzis (turn off the commentary though).

Took forever for Steam just to let me download. Going to try it out later.

Since the Diablo 3 beta is down (of course, I just got in yesterday and downloaded it over night), I am downloading the demo right now. Hoping for some good sneaky sniper action.

Just finished the demo twice, its feels basically like the first one if a little more polished and linear. The sniping is just as good as before no complaints, although the squeamish may not like that bullet cam. Oh and I learned it has two player coop for the single player, which is awesome. Demo is rather short though, and quite linear. I hope the later levels are a bit more open at least.

Demo is about 60-90 minutes, even for newbie snipers like me. I wonder if they'll vary the amount of sneaking and sniping in later levels. The kill cam is quite satisfying, the "guards seek out the last location they saw/heard something" mechanic is quite nice and they really did a good job of making the sniping feel empowering. Agree with master0 though, the level was quite linear. Would have been nice if I could have opened some of the doors to the derelict houses.

Edit: does anyone playing the demo get a "must buy" vibe? I'd probably enjoy it for the same reasons I loved Commandos back in the day and, more recently, DE:HR. But I am not a big fan of WWII scenarios and with a backlog and D3 around the corner, no full price for me.

HOLY ****** ***** *****

I JUST SHOT THE GRENADE ON A GUY AND IT EXPLODED AND KILLED THE GUY AND HIS FRIEND

IT WAS AMAZING

I SAW IT HAPPEN IN SLOW MOTION

IT WAS AMAAAAAAZIIIIING

Seriously.

Amazing.

I "get a I'll wait for the steam sale" vibe from it. Unless the reviews change my mind on it. Still should be fun, my favorite trick shot I ever did was shooting a grenade through a small hole in a wall for a double kill.

Such a nice scene, I just had to ruin it.

Haha, nice shot. I wasn't patient enough, so I popped the first guy without realizing that he wasn't actually the forever alone type. Oh well.

Yeah, so that level was a little linear, but as I recall, a lot of the levels in the original sniper elite game were quite linear too, especially as you progressed to later missions. Still an awesome game that I'm reinstalling now.

My pre-order guilt was just wiped away too. Shooting a grenade by accident or shooting the gas tank on the convoy truck was pure bliss. I just love bullet time. Might have to pre-order Max Payne 3 now too

It's not so much the linearity but rather the maps feel very small and narrow. The original was much more open in that respect. I'm in no rush to get it, but with coop and awesome sniping I will most certainly get it some point.

Just played through the demo and, yeah, probably not worth full price, but I'll be picking it up at some point. I think the sweet spot for me would be about $15, based on the demo. I'll probably play through the demo one or two more times just to play around with possibilities (I want to shoot a grenade).

I like the feeling of scoring a big long shot and the feedback I get in points.

You can turn off all assistance and have the AI turn into a pack of effective bloodhounds.

The thing I learned is this is not a true sniper you are playing - more like an FPS lone wolf super dude. Being found out before you find your target is not a game ender. You can whip out your SMG and fight back ala any other shooter. I don't know if your high-value prey will move locations if you are detected early (that'd be cool). And you heal by hiding from enemy sight and fire. That threw me a little and was unwanted for about two seconds before I realized the amount of bad guys they throw around - you need a healing mechanic as you will get shot a lot.

Hopefully, they offer more points to those who can sneak up on their targets undetected using the stone throw distraction action and other sneaky tech-neekies.

I look forward to my unavoidable "got spotted, time to reload" playthrough of this that takes multiple years for me to finish.

I kept hammering at the demo until I stealthily eliminated every single dude that seemed even remotely possible to kill without getting spotted.

I hope the areas expand to allow multiple approaches to the target. This is a game that cries out for that sort of thing - and a choice of when to approach. Maybe when it's daylight there are less patrols due to greater visibility. Or choose to go at night, using darkness as cover but dealing with more alert guards and more guards in general.

*cough* Crysis *cough*

I've played through six or seven levels so far on the hardest difficulty and I have to say this game is probably a shoe-in for 75-80 on Metacritic.

Pros:
Great graphics with incredibly satisfying bullet time/x-ray effects. Note that you can set in the options how often it goes to slow-mo (from never to every time you hit something). The X-Ray effect is particularly cool and never gets old.
The score system is a really fun way to give instant feedback on shooting.
Aim for the window slat on tanks.
I like how there are level events that provide noises for shots. Church bells, loud speaker announcements, ect. It's gamey, but really satisfying to wipe out a plaza over the cover of artillery.
The kill Hitler DLC is silly, but probably the most fun level I've played so far.
The most fun you will have in this game is those times when you are lining up on a single target, waiting for the perfect opportunity to take the shot. The slow-mo mechanic only adds to the overall satisfaction.

Cons:
The protagonist is an amazing shot with that sniper rifle, but cannot shoot for sh*t with his side arms. This is an issue for every time you have to get into a close range firefight (which is pretty often, sadly)
The levels are all quite linear and scripted.
Most enemies are in the same spot over and over again, making replayability an issue. Enemy sharpshooters move around a bit, but you can tell that there are usually only one or two places they are likely to be in a given map.
The different rifles you get (I've gotten three so far) aren't all that distinguishable from one another.
The story is dull.
On its hardest difficulty, I never had trouble getting through a level (can't say the same for the first game)
Ballistics are exaggerated (using RO2 as a comparison) and inconsistent. Bullet drop is insane and somehow enemies can be as accurate as you at 100+ meters with submachine guns. Kind of crazy.
Based on the achievements, it looks to be a very short game (4-6 hours)

Verdit:

Buy it now: If you must play a WWII sniper game at any cost.
Buy it later: If you feel like dropping $15 on a silly sniper game that has elements of Max Payne without the story.
Never buy it: If you want a simulation game and/or want a deep WWII story.

I enjoyed the demo but blew through it in 40 minutes. Entirely too linear for my tastes. Looks like I want to play a sniper sim and not a sniper action game ...

I just had so much fun playing the demo. It only took about 10 minutes. The most fun was when I hit a guy on the hip where his explosives are and he combusted. That and the exploding heart shot. My only concern is how long is the game total?
