NFL 2011-2012 Off-Season Pre-Draft Catch-All

Ultimate Frisbee is awesome, but I'm not sure how many organized teams for kids there are around here. And Houston has a thriving scene. I played in an adult league one year, but getting up at 8 or earlier on Saturday to go play in a league where there were no coaches or referees was clearly less fun than playing in evening pick-up games. Yeah, I said referees.

Speaking of which, we should discuss that in a different thread:

Lot of "hopefullys" there *Legion* :P

"Hopefully" is all that exists in April. Reality doesn't exist until the pads go on.

Pretty stoked that we're finally nearing the draft.

That's why my boys swim. It broke my heart as someone who loved playing football to make that decision. But aside from head trauma issues, I personally have other health problems I blame on my time in the game and I didn't want my boys to have to go through all the physical things that I do when they are older.

Ultimate frisbee for mine. Of course, part of that is because they'll end up being about 125 lbs wet by the time they graduate.

Jockeys, duh.

2012 schedule tomorrow. Hopefully some better TV slots for the Texans following last year's success.

A pretty cool story about Trent Richardson, and a girl with Leukemia

I plan on steering my future kids toward safer sports like thai boxing and ju jitsu.

So ESPN is just PR for the NFL now?

3 hour tv special to release the NFL schedule last night...

Ratings and money- They show soooo many NFL shows because people watch them.

I know you complained before that it seemed like so many of their general interest panel shows shorted conversation about basketball just to talk about NFL offseason stuff like Manning's move, the bounty stuff, free agency, etc. The simple fact is that football discussion simply brings higher ratings and more commercial money. You'll notice that with their new contract they paid big money to extend NFL Live from a half hour to an hour daily and to add another hour a day in the form of NFL32. They wouldn't do this if it weren't profitable.

Just odd. Every other sport, college or pro, handles schedule releases with a simple press release. A 3 hour tv block seems excessive. I guess someone watched it, but not me. I went to look at the 49ers schedule on their web site last night and that was enough for me.

And there are! The Texans are getting two Monday Night Football games, one Sunday night, one Thursday night, and the Thanksgiving game at Detroit. Very excited! Quite a change over last year, when almost all of our games were at noon.

In other news, I've begun wondering why Weeden from OK State isn't getting more talk as a QB prospect. He's getting some, and was on ESPN yesterday, but it seems like the conventional wisdom has settled on a big two (Luck and Griffin) and a clear third (A&M's own Tannehill). Is this just because Weeden is older than MilkmanDan?

The Ravens schedule looks ... rough.

Awesome, Tampa's coming back to Minnesota. Crap, it's Thursday night. It's my last chance to see a game here before the Vikings leave next year (which is going to happen).

Take that Friday off now and never look back.

Me, yes. The boy is almost 10, and doesn't typically stay up that late. We'll have to see how it goes on that one; we'd realistically get home at like 11:30 or so, and that's a good 2.5-3 hours past normal bedtime.

Have you seen the Titans schedule?

Well, they get to play the Colts twice, so there's that. Then again, the Ravens get the Browns twice a year ...

He can nap in the car on the way there/back.

You have a few months to slowly increase his bedtime up to midnight.

Mountain Dew has its uses.

Interesting discussion on draft pick value.

In terms of the NFL, I prefer the Poly line that has been presented. I believe the Harvard model overemphasizes later picks (as 6th and 7th rounders rarely are given chances to grow, though this might change with the way draft picks are paid), but here we have a more gradual decline than the JJ model.

The Redskins paid for 1.2 with the JJ model, which fits their way of thinking (I believe), but I firmly believe they overpaid for it. In the end it might pan out, but outside of some savvy drafting, FA pickups and perhaps a trade or two, the Redskins shouldn't be competitive for a number of years.

Then again, Cam Newton came in and made the Panthers look a hell of a lot better than anyone expected. Thing is, Carolina earned Newton and have picks to fortify their defense, while the Redskins cupboard is pretty bare in the coming years in terms of drafting.

Regardless, this article present three different ways to look at the value of draft picks and for that I am glad as the JJ model has been outdated for a while now, imho.

From that chart, it looks like the JJ chart is even well below and skewed from a graph created from stringing the lowest peaks together.
