Grim Dawn Catch-All

I'm in, but still deciding for how much.

They're a good team, Titan Quest was excellent, I love loot games, I love games with unusual settings and I've been watching this game for a long time... buuuut... the fact that they're only asking for $280,000 - despite how far along the game actually looks - makes me wonder if they know what they're doing. I can't imagine it costing less than a solid million to finish this thing up.

Well, they already had the preorder thing up on their website for the past couple of years, so perhaps the $280,000 isn't some sort of drop dead "we need the money or this game is dead" sort of thing. Like he said in the video, it'll help them hire people or pay the people they have for more time.

...and I'm in. Coop ARPG, Yes please!

I've actually been following this game for a while; never got around to preordering.

All these games and kickstarter projects starting after the winter season and around Mass Effect and Diablo releases. Not good for those who're broke :\

I was intrigued by Grim Dawn a while ago but it didn't grab me like that occultist video. That looks fantastic! And I can't believe their particle/fx artist isn't working in the industry somewhere. They are top notch to be sure.

Krater looks really good too. I mean really good. If I am reading correctly, it sounds like they have found an interesting take on permanent injury to your character. I am not a fan of any sort of permadeath or persistent injury in my games. It is too roll of the dice, sucks-to-be-you-no-matter-how-much-time-you-put-into-your-character. But this sounds like it is taking the trauma and turning it into a random boon. No two characters will be the same no matter how closely you spec them.

Crate answers some questions, including wtf the money is for: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/...

Well, it didn't take long for them to convince me. Backed.

Backed. Backed the Banner Saga while I was at it.

Hah! I just realized I signed onto their forums again and posted very similar ideas for improving the skill mastery as I did 2 years ago. (involving core skills that are awarded automatically through points in the mastery like RIFT's tree/root system)

Well it seems they are hell bent on leaving the TQ system intact. So I just can't support a game that I have no confidence in the skill system's longevity, no matter how cool that occulist video looks. I mean, what good is it if they captured the 5-10 level window in which the mastery is useful? TQ gave you more options but was probably worse than D2 with skills that were godly at level 5, skills that were ok throughout, skills that sucked until the last 20 levels, and skills that were a rollercoaster.

Every rpg eventually devolves into cookie cutter builds. And when you have cookie cutter builds, it is good to have many to choose from. Or is it? Because there are different degrees of cookie cutter and having more volume of more narrowly defined cookie cutter builds is worse than having a less amount of less stringent builds.

To sum up in an equation where + is more, - is less, Q is quantity and V is variety:

+Q +V > -Q +V > -Q -V >+Q -V

I'll probably end up backing though I didn't play Titan Quest. I picked TQ up for my dad a couple of years ago and he loved it. As well, the game looks really pretty. And, $18.

Fang, yes, all these games devolve into narrowly defined cookie cutter builds, if you absolutely must have the very best character. If you're more interested in seeing what works instead of what works best, it's a different story. In Diablo II I created an assassin with low defense and elemental resist but high physical resist and a ridiculous amount of life leech. She could survive anything as long as she never stopped attacking. Stupid? Hell yes. But also fun and different.

New video has been posted featuring a bit of music and sound design.

One of the devs just started a reddit AMA: http://www.reddit.com/r/IAmA/comment...

Haha, awesome! Dan Crislip is an old friend of mine from music school. I was wondering if he might make an appearance in any of their Kickstarter videos.

They're $226K....they need a little under $55K with 17 days to go...so about $3200/day. It certainly seems doable.

This project should certainly make the goal, but the enthusiasm seems a little lacking- which is too bad considering how much love Titan Quest has.

Another video (class or boss fight perhaps) push should get them much closer. I am sure that occulist video netted them a bunch of moolah.

Apparently the Iama they did on Reddit yesterday(?) has led to a big boost in donations. They're up ~$16K in almost a little over hours.

I was initially not going to chip in for this. After all with D3 and TL2, what do I need this for?

Then I watched the video and saw more about the open world business. This game sounds like a fun diversion into a new blend of game-types. Kicked in and looking forward to it.

Well, and maybe this isn't clear enough from them, but their projected release date is August 2013, so I don't them as competing with D3 and TL2. I have seen a lot of people say they won't be kicking in for because of those two games, specifically.

It looks to also have a segmented story that you can do out of order. These kinds of games are great for once you become a pro at the mechanics of the game. You can skip ahead to the highest level areas you can handle when creating alts and avoid plodding through the introduction over and over.

The thing that keeps me from kicking in is the Aug 2013 date. If I can get the game for $20 at release, there's no reason for me to pay $18 more than a year in advance.

The number of people that will still be playing D3 every week in August 2013 will be: a lot.

Except that if enough people think that way, no one gets to buy it in advance and no one gets to buy it at release because it won't make its goal. I think of it this way: in August 2013, I'm going to get an awesome loot game and it'll feel like I'm getting it for free because I paid so long ago.

You get alpha and/or beta access for contributing the 18$ no?

I think you have to kick-in $35 for beta access and $50 for alpha access.

I'm totally going to forget to contribute to this. I should stop procrastinating sometime and just do it.

Maybe tomorrow.

I just kicked in. Hopefully, my bucks will get this game a movin'.

Ditto.
