Crysis 3 Catch-All

So, not surprisingly, EA has made good on its promise and dumped a little information on Crysis 3, including some screens that have them cynical blog posters swinging between "I mean I’ve seen companies reusing assets but this…this is just plain lazy!" to "Those screenshots will look nothing like the finished game in any way, shape or form."

Meanwhile, others have criticised the notion that a billion-dollar futuristic power suit seems a bit at odds with the use of a bow and arrow, neatly overlooking the simple fact that - screw common sense in the face! This game has bows and s**t!

The game is set to take place in New York again, although the city's looking a bit more like how it was envisioned in Enslaved this time around. A shame, then, that the art direction likely won't reach as high, because if these screens are indeed real, then... well, I'm planning on buying a new PC come summer(ish) anyway.

(Never mind that Crysis 3 is presently slated for the spring of next year)

clicky if you want bigger screenies.

It seemed like at the end of Crysis 2, things were pretty cleaned up in NYC and they were ready to move some where else... in the world!

Yeah, NYC can seem like a bit of a retread, but the early reports I've read are that it's a dramatically overhauled version of the old stomping grounds...to the tune of having the city under reclaimed rain forest-like conditions.

All I know is that Crysis 2 sported one of my favorite single-player campaigns this gen., so that earns enough good will to sign me up for a day one purchase.

Games like Crysis need to stop worrying their pretty little head about a plot and just call their missions what they are, scenarios, and cut the overwrought voices in your ear trying to move along a plot they don't really care about.

Same here. Day one perch.

The Crysis games have been some of the very few day one purchases I do. I absolutely loved the first and second. I even bought a new computer at each release just to make sure I can get the full experience.

Personally, I think the bows are a dumb idea although that won't ruin the game for me. I am hoping against all odds that this is not an origin only game. If it is, I will have to pass this time around.

While I would have liked to see another location, I think that's partly because I would have liked another location to begin with. That is to say, New York has been getting done to death in recent times, and Crysis 2 was just one of many games to draw from the city. It doesn't seem to matter how many people shout out that they want the next installment [insert random game (or GTA) here] to take place in Tokyo, or even London at a safer stretch, but for some reason (multiple actually, and I'd be willing to have a guess or two), NYC frequently wins out.

(That said, I hardly find Tokyo or London to be especially inspired locations - there are many other places in Japan (or Asia, for that matter. Busan would be nice) and Europe; personally I'd rather travel around a virtual Sapporo or Kobe than I would the capital again).

Still, that digression aside, I am totally down with the overhaul, and would probably feel less sour about it had they used just about any other city in Crysis 2 and then overhauled that instead. It certainly seems to be a happy balance between the first and second game, and I like the thought that it could build upon the meaning of the events of the past. Well, I would if I felt that said events really struck me as meaningful in any way during my time with Crysis 2.

I love that EA sent me an email today asking me to put down money on this when it's a year out.

Kickstarter in disguise!

Yeah... you're not playing this game.

I wish it were a new environment, but I'll still be Day 1. I loved the SP and MP from Crysis 2.

If it was the MP from Crysis1, I might be more interested, but C2's MP just seemed like any other arena shooter.

I think I like the Compound Bow idea. It'll be perfect for sneaky sneaking. Since I liked Crysis, Crysis Warhead, and Crysis 2, I'll be picking it up.

Crytek just can't get away from beaches and forests can they? They manage it for one game in an urban setting, and now they are bringing that same setting back their staple.

Is that a "butt" fish?

Can't say as I blame the company. It releases one game with an urban setting and every hardcore pc snob with an internet connection (read: all of them) accuses it of selling out.

Mind you, Crysis 2 was much more linear, which was at least a part of it.

Oh yeah.

There's only so much you can tell from a 2m trailer, but something I found myself thinking was that in years gone by when games were cheaper and quicker to make, what they showed in the trailer would have been the kind of content that would have gone into an expansion. It looked like more Crysis2 with extras, a different spin on an old environment.

It hard to be certain though, as that kind of trailer is just fast cuts of action that looks impressive, rather than showing much substance.

I don't understand why they are trying to make it seem like the bow is some sort of miraculous new addition. Let's be honest.... They added it because of Hunger Games. Don't try to feed me a line of crap about how it's so awesome and innovative. You added it to appeal to a demographic.

That being said. I will play this at some point just to see the eye candy on my 3 screens.

It does come across as being a marketing gimmick used to give them something distinctive, and that they should have thought about being distinctive earlier when they put all their guys in dull featureless super-soldier suits and had the player character have almost no personality.

Unless there's some convoluted in-game reason, I just don't see it making sense in the same game series that is a modern/near future military with powerful weapons. I wouldn't mind if they did a low-tech variant on Crysis, which I think could be more interesting.

The Tek Bow was good enough for Turok, it's good enough for Prophet.

My first thought when they revealed the bow was (coupled with the suit's invisible Stealth mode) Predator.

Add a literal urban jungle to the mix and you've got Predator +1.

Works for me.

Bow+Nade launcher = reminded me of Rambo, where he uses grenade tipped arrows

Haven't bought Crysis 2 yet, but definitely enjoyed Crysis 1 (at least the first 2/3 of the game). I guess they're using the sci-fi thing to move away / differentiate from BF / COD.

I think they've got a weird cognitive dissonance with all their shooters. On one hand they want to be COD, because COD is the current market leader, but on the other hand they never were like COD in that all Crytek's games from the start have been pretty tactical.

The fact that it's sci-fi is a side factor really, I never really felt they took full advantage of it. Although the voices in your ear in C2 say a lot of science-sounding words it never really matters to you, and that's not accounting for the massive shift in story between C1 and C2.

While I don't disagree with this, the whole no personality super soldier thing seems to have worked out pretty well for Halo -_-

I have no problems with the bow itself. Overblown marketing, maybe, but I'm not looking to Crysis for a mind-blowing yarn set in a fully cohesive and sensible world.

Interactive gameplay demo just landed. It's kind of neat that you can pick a gameplay style and skip to that infiltration type in the mission.

It's funny, I always thought the computer voice that alerts you of activated suit powers was stylish and bad-ass. But listening to "Cloak engaged." every 5 seconds was kind of distracting in the video. Maybe being a passive viewer makes it come forward more where actually playing out the mission recedes it to the background.

Other than that, game is looking great so far.

That looks awesome. Glad to see more vegetation on this one.

The MP beta is up, on origin for PC in the demos section, 3.4GB.

If you're on an nvidia card, there's new drivers: http://www.geforce.com/whats-new/art...

Crap, I want to play this, but Comcast just informed me I'm at 93% of my data cap. How long does it run?
