MLB 12: The Show

I'm loving Road to the Show as a 2B. You really feel jacked every time you get a hit or even have a good AB. The game now recognizes good plate appearances like line drive outs and working deep into the count and awards you training points.

I think the last time I played RTTS in '09 rewards were purely results-based.

Yes! The last version I was playing was the PSP version, and their judgements were so draconion. I love that now, if you go down 0-2, you can use contact swing to hang in there and at least get a 'good at-bat' rating (and the requisite points).

I think this is what they were talking about with progressing faster in RTTS.

I'm a few months into my first season of RTTS as a shortstop in the rather pathetic Mets organization. Still in AA, but I'm pretty lousy, so that seems fair.

It took a week, but my resistance has worn down. I'm trading in crap and picking this up. I brought some games with me to work and will be stopping on the way home. I don't know why I do this cause I won't play this for more than a month.

I finally figured out why the devs were talking about getting to the majors in RTTS faster than in previous years. It's a combination of two things: (1) tweaked the way you earn points (the good at bats, etc. was implemented last year, they've tweaked their formulas) and (2) you start your RTTS career as a starting AA player and not a bench AA player. That's the biggie.

Sorry I've been blathering about this on two pages, but I finally remembered what it was that was significantly different from last year. Moving on ...

I've been spending some time in the Diamond Dynasty mode. If I get a chance I'll post some screens of my work later. It's a good way to pass time until the full minors rosters come out so I can start my franchise.

Something feels different to this one. Maybe it's the ball physics. I'm not sure.

I played one exhibition game with the intention of giving Pulse Pitching a try and seeing how the game plays. I took the Orioles through 13 innings to lose to Cardinals due to a walk off home run. The score was something like 11-10 and took forever to finish (as I was soaking in the game). I should've won the game earlier but I ended up holding up the wrong baserunner on one play and sending the wrong one on another. Them's the breaks.

I didn't hit all that well, but I hit better than I did in last year's game. Perhaps that's because I went back to buttons for hitting instead of analog.

Anyway, Pulse Pitching. It's weird. I can't decide if I like it or if it's too gimmicky. I definitely had fewer strikeouts than normal and a couple walks, which were great. On the other hand I gave up big hits. I suppose that's also good since I'm not simply dominating with pitching.

Overall, though, something feels different. Not sure what.

Are you playing offline or online? I've had a good time designing uniforms and whatnot but don't feel like sinking time into it against jerks who will disconnect if losing. I played one game against the Brewers and eeked it out.

The ball physics are way, way different. More weight, spin, and unpredictability to the ball now (they've mapped the field more specifically and irregularly too, so bounces aren't so samey all the time). I love when I hit a drive now that's sort of towards an outfielder, but the spin has it curl away from them and out of reach.

I'm back to button hitting after using analog last year too. Analog feels good when I connect, but the ins and outs of that much tension in my thumb at that precise angle never quite felt right. Plus there's the whole timing of the step thing, which can neutralize a swing before I even take it. It's just too stressful to me.

Now if they could only get rid of the animation where the person who strikes out hits themselves on the head it'd be a perfect game.

I knew about the physics, but I didn't realize they made the fields irregular. That's great. I thought the loss of three bounce balls was because of the physics, but it's the physics and the field. Cool.

Diamond Dynasty is starting to make a bit of sense. Could be a fun diversion on the PS3 until Operation Sports finishes its Full Minors rosters. Lord knows I've put a lot of time into the uniforms and logo of the Queens Kaisers.

Inspired by my latest ridiculous TV addiction, I present the Indiana Squatchers.

Whoa

I love your foot logo, but man there are some crazy stuff in that thread, like:

Some cool stuff. I haven't put as much time in The Show yet. Plan to. But if there is a chance for a Diamond Dynasty with PS 3 folks, keep me in mind and hopefully I can be ready for it.

Regarding DD as a off-line mode. I thought this was a on-line thing with folks only. You can play with made up teams off-line?

Yes. You can earn DD coins and unlock stadiums by beating MLB teams. More coins are awarded for beating higher rated teams and playing against a higher difficulty.

Cool! Thanks for the info.

Some thread killer name Seth is doing a series on MLB 12: The Show over at Quarter to Three. Here's the first entry.

It's a grand experiment to see if I can kill a whole site!

Yes, considering you were on the podcast this week.

Any The Show talk?

Very little. I do talk about Diamond Dynasty as my game of the week.

After going 0-11 in my first attempt at franchise mode, time to swallow my pride and accept that it's ok to have fun one tick down at Veteran.

Haha. No, that's just how bad the Mets really are.

I've been playing MLB 2K12 on my pc because I've been so frustrated with the hitting in this game. I want to use analog controls. Want to. Just can't.

Ouch. That's sad, but true

Hahaha... yeah, I really like the analog controls too, until the going gets too tough, and then they start to stress me out with their lack of precision. They seem a bit more forgiving on Veteran, so I'm going to see how it goes. Pulse pitching is a fun new tweak, but I find that the timing on the Vita is different depending on which camera you use, and it's a bit stuttery on 'Pitcher Close' which happen to be my personal fave. I like to see those sweet graphics as close up as possible.

I also like some of the straight-on broadcast cameras (like Pittsburgh or Atlanta) but you can't select individual ones on the Vita... just whichever stadium you happen to be in.

If anyone is interested, the full minors rosters from the Operation Sports team are out. Look for O.S.F.M. in the roster vault. Full minor league rosters ( plus missing MLB guys like Cespedes and Darvish) done with precision accuracy. Makes franchise mode even better.

Yes, Knights OSFM rosters are dope. I'm using 'em.

I'm 2-3 since restarting on Veteran. It's fair, but still plenty tough for me. Gotta dip back into my RTTS and want to spend more time with Diamond Dynasty too. So much game here.

Is it crazy of me to ask if these are available for the Vita? The games are so similar that I would believe they were available. I would also believe that the Vita wouldn't have the ability to import them.

I'm pretty sure the roster vault is available on the Vita as well. I started my franchise on the PS3 before throwing it over to the handheld, but it should work exactly the same. The faces on the custom created players just won't look as good on the Vita (created players tend to look like they got stung in the face by bees).

The downloadable rosters for the minors do work. Wow. Here is how you do it.

Also, does anyone know if there is a list of players and batting stances? My all time favorite player when I was a kid was Ron Gant. I was a dumb young kid and emulated that thing he did where' he'd lift his front leg before swinging. I'd love to find that stance if it exists.
