Hero Academy Catch-All

Yep, officially hate the Tribe. So OP, it's ridiculous. And even by their very nature they're free from opposing strategy or tactics. Think you're actually using strategy to win? Ha! Here's a Tidal Wave, Chieftain, or Shaman to completely f*ck you over. While I'm on the strategy note, it doesn't feel very rewarding to lose a lengthy game because the game decides to give you nothing to work with at the end, or give your opponent an army.

So, to ask nicely, I'd not like to play against the Tribe until a nice good nerf.

Ah, Robot Entertainment! Taking their AoE:Online design prowess to Hero Academy.

My next game invite is not Tribes. So by all means don't be afraid to accept it.

And that's why I hadn't. Good to know!

Challenges sent!

By the way, how do you swap items?

loving this after picking it up today. primer2828 is my user

Drag the item to the door on the left. It can be a waste though, the randomizer kinda stinks most days.

As for the Tribe, in in agreement with Cyrax. I think they're OP, but I doubt the nerf will be nearly that big. Some tweaks are needed, there's no doubt about that. But at least they don't suck as badly as Dwarves did during their release.

On that note, I'm back to playing Dwarves all the time. If you want an easy game, send me a challenge, and I'll help you as best I can!

Thanks for the invites! After playing on my iPad though, my iPhone 3GS is looking a little shabby. Looks like I have another excuse to upgrade!

This is a rather basic question, but please clarify this for me: If you destroy all the opponent's crystals, you win, but if you lose all your guys, you lose, right? I was playing my first game thinking that I only needed to have the crystals reduced more than my opponent, and those games didn't end well for me.

Correct. The 2 win conditions are:

  • Destroy the opponents crystal(s) OR
  • Kill, and stomp, every unit your opponent has

Man I'm hooked on this game. I think it's the only game I've played on my phone in the past 2 weeks.. That little red notification bubble in the upper right with a upper 20's number in it is pretty damn compelling.

I generally find it best to play the game counter to an opponents strategy. They overreach to keep killing off individual characters, chances are that they're leaving their crystal vulnerable as well as Assault Boost tiles.

Just downloaded this game and looking for a generous soul to tolerate the first few games, as well as any suggestions on a first team to get acquainted with the game. Thanks in advance.

Academy since it's free is a good start I think. Also, send a challenge to shoptroll. I'm the resident punching bag

Many thanks. Will probably get to it later today. I also shamelessly live up to the site name, so can't commit to playing more than a turn or two most days.

Shot you a game invite Aretz, and don't worry about the turn timing, this game is the epitome of "at your own pace" (if someone wants to play more, they can just crank up a few more games with randoms..)

Tips:
- Remember that you can retry your actions multiple times before final submission, just click on the little blue pie slices in the bottom left to undo. In settings you can also flip the option of allowing you to undo individual actions as opposed to all actions.

- Remember that you can win by going for the crystals, it's often an easier win than trying to take out all the enemies.

- If you step on a KO'd enemy, you remove them from the map stopping them from being revived. Dropping a fireball on them works equally well.

Don't get frustrated if you lose a few troops/games, the learning curve on this game goes pretty fast, you'll be a pro in no time.

I think this seems to be my main problem right now, along with clustering my troops too much :\ Is there anything else I'm doing wrong (aside from bad RNG)?

Sent out a game to you Aretz! Don't expect strategic prowess - I've only won one or two games.

For those of you who sent me invites, I'm taking a break for a little bit. But I will be back.

I think this seems to be my main problem right now, along with clustering my troops too much : Is there anything else I'm doing wrong (aside from bad RNG)?

- As with all good tactical games, try and guess the enemies likely response based on what he's got on the board and what's likely in his/her hand. Groups of troops are good (with dwarven paladins aura stacking) but bad if there's an enemy council wizard/tribe witch within 1-2 moves of the horde. Think about sacrificing one of your units in order to draw out/execute one of their overpowered heroes. Especially those pesky council archers. If someone brings one of those out and loads them down with gear, that's probably their main tactic, remove it from their arsenal and you'll oftentimes see they don't have a significant backup plan. Don't give the enemy a good shot on you from a nearby power boost square (the sword squares)

- Occupy assault boost (purple diamond) squares and layer on defenses to that troop. It's remarkably tough to dig out a fully equipped knight sitting on an assault square backed by a healer, and it makes any attack against a crystal significantly more effective. If you're playing dwarves, try and get your engineers on these squares, they're made doubly effective.

- Take the temp of a game in the early-mid game (crystal health,# reinforcements left on each sides, board occupation/premium square occupation) to decide what your final strategy is going to be and stick with the plan (barring silly moves from an opponent)

- Remember that on the vine covered crystal board/s your crystals themselves can do a 300 physical attack, oftentimes it's the best option for damaging/finishing off an enemy.

- Try and maintain numerical superiority on the battlefield, barring tons of enemy troops with area of effect or chain attacks. I can't count the number of times I've only had 1-2 enemy troops moving around on the board against my 5-6. There's just no way to stop the forward momentum of that big of a troop disparity.

- Sometimes it's a good idea to sit back and let the enemy make the first mistake. If your troops are well positioned and dug in, focus on a few fast "move up->attack crystal->fall back" moves that'll lure them in to your well supported defenders.

Good advice, thanks John! I think one of my main faults with this game (and most tactical games in fact) is that I tend to rush in and not think ahead. Will have to slow down and think a little more and work on some of the points you mention.

Great game, Ariskany. You had me down to my last couple of guys, and if you'd have lasted another turn I'd probably have lost that game.

Getting back to playing the game, and I've sent (and are sending) invites to all those I've not played against. And a friendly reminder that I'd prefer not to play against the Tribe, though I'm pretty sure I'm about to win my first game against them. Thanks, Johnvanjim! ;P

edit: Blackanchor, the game says your ign is invalid.

I'd be interested in a few more games as well.

New to Hero Academy, but liking it very much. Like some of you have posted, most days I'll only get to a few turns. Send an invite along: fivebrians

Thanks!

I'm getting an invalid name error.

Huh... I just accepted your request now, and you're on my list of "friends". Did it seem to work out on your end?

Edit:

Wierd. Just tried to start a Hero Academy game with you, and it says "Invalid Player Name." Anyone else have this problem? I also don't understand: with Ticket To Ride, I can go into Game Center, pick a friend, find the game, click 'play', and it will start up a match and fill in the friends name. Doesn't seem to work in Hero Academy...

HA uses its own friend system. Invite me as cyrax.

So, I see that all heroic teams are half off this weekend. Any recommendations?

I would get them all, but if you only had to choose one get the Dwarves. They are my personal favorite.

Goodie, I get to pick up the Dark Elves. They still haven't patched The Tribe, so no sale there.

Sorry for the long turns of late. Ascension is pretty much taking up all my time. I'll try not to be so anal about deciding my turn, and get these matches moving.

Cyrax, I just got around to sending you an invite. I saw your response and promptly completely forgot about it.

CRAP! Double post!
