Self indulgent parent thread

Cross posted from the PAX East thread figuring I might get better insight from this thread.

On a side note, what is good hotel etiquette with crying babies? Leland just would not stop last night. At home we let him cry it out at night but at the hotel we didn't want to do that but because it is different then we do at home I almost think it made it worse because he (and us) didn't sleep much all night. The neighbor kept banging on the wall. We tried co-sleeping which we have never done before and that was a failure, and I think the fact that he can see us (mostly mom I think) just frustrated the heck out of him but once he got to her he wouldn't fall asleep and gut frustrated because he was tiered. We kept waiting for the front desk to call or for someone to knock on our door but it never happened. I was trying to imagine the responses the hotel staff have gotten from other frustrated parents like "Yes I KNOW he has been crying! Why do YOU make him stop if it is bothering YOU!" My wife would never say something like that she is too nice, but crying babies have a way of bringing out the best in people.

Should we ask the front desk to be relocated to a room without neighbors so he can cry without disturbing others? Any other ideas/suggestions on babies in hotels. We don't want to be jerks to our neighbors but don't have any great ideas on how to prevent it from happening again tonight.

Goodgerdom, what's the cooler nickname spelling for Lucas, Luke or Luc?

So what you're really asking is, Star Wars or Star Trek?

Luke as in Skywalker wasn't short for Lucas or Lukas, it was just Luke. As for shorthand? Luke.

I think doing this is a good idea. It shows the hotel staff that you are willing to do something to help out the other paying guests, and you're open to suggestions.

Rather than ask if they can move you to another room (who wants a makeshift bed in the janitors closet?) ask if they could suggest something themselves. I doubt you guys are the first people with a baby unsettled from travel. They most likely have existing protocols for such things.

For all you know, they may have already relocated those around you it was disturbing, or given them complimentary breakfasts, etc.

We have friends who put the pack and play in the bathroom always...that way they can't see each other and the bathroom is at least not as close to the neighbor...

I wanted to do this but the pack & play didn't fit... We ended up putting a heavy blanket over the top and two long sides of the p&p so he couldn't see us. After he had a good hour of light crying/whimpering he fell asleep and slept all night without a hitch. He has even gone back down for his morning nap at this point so we had a much better night.

Thank you for the input everybody.

Your neighbor was a jerk.
Babies cry. You needn't feel guilty. You were doing everything that you could.
Also know that (at least in Ontario) "residential occupancies" are required to have a higher sound resistance than any other buildings, between rooms, and to adjacent elevator and service shafts. This is never a perfect solution, but know that from the momnet the building was concieved, to the night your baby was restless, everything possible had been done to let you guys have the freedom to have a crying baby with you.

The first time my neighbour banged on the wall, I would have been banging on his door.

I've been known to be out in the street yelling at inconsiderate neighbours. We had some landcaping their yard at 10:30pm and carting recylcle bins full of dirt and rocks up our sideyard. I let them know it wasn't OK. A 6'-4" 220lb guy as beautiful as I am, yelling at you in a pair of sleeping shorts is a fairly strong negotiating position.

Ask others to be as considerate as you and your wife are toward them. Don't suffer all of the guilt. I too was raised to be seen and not heard, but I'm finding that not long after my generation that wasn't taught, and keeping that up entirely isn't working out so well. I've changed my postition somewhat on that.

I'm with Ghostship here. Your neighbor was a jerk. If he or she'd spent 5 seconds thinking about it, he or she would have immediately realized that what was annoying her through the walls must be ten times worse on the other side. As far as I know, no one listens to crying babies for fun. Banging on the walls helps nobody and just adds to the annoyance factor.

Now that we are back to our normal sleeping setup...

Hey Ghostship, Can I get your number for next time I need to get a point across? I'll pay your transportation to Orleans.
You could have come in handy a few times in the past.

After 2 long days of PAX East, little man was tired.

I should probably not develop my reputation as a pot stirrer (____ disturber) any furhter.
I'm supposed to be working on my soft skills.
However, happy to meet with local GWJers.

Though you should know that these days the 220 doesn't come from being particularly svelt. Maybe more like 200 I've been running.

Ok, here's my first entry(s)

Now that's a quality Christmas photo!

YES.

This is usually not the type of thread I'd bother reading but since my wife and I are pregnant (~6 weeks with our first) I thought I should stop in and see what all the hype is about. I've even more excited after seeing these awesome pics! Congrats to all you great Goodjer parents!

Congrats!
So far I would say it is totally worth it! My first son is only 7 months old but I'm diggin' it. It is growing me as a man in uncomfortable but wonderful ways and I am sure I much of the growing is to come.

Kind of old (from Halloween), but a favorite.

And last but not least, a very talented local artist, Cbabi Bayoc is doing a 365 Days of Fatherhood art project after someone told him images of black fathers with their children will never sell. Here is one he did of a picture of me and my kids.

Funny thing about that picture: 30 seconds before and after the pic was taken the girls were both crying and yelling. I was able to tickle/laugh them into smiles for approximately 30 secs before the tears started flowing again...Ahh Parenthood!

+1 (~6 months for us).

How self-indulgent are we talking? Should I start posting baby bump photos?

Benticore, your kids are gorgeous.

Gravey, provided it isn't the conception, be as self indulgent as you like! Congrats, and to 93 as well.

My liitle boy suddenly decided that it was time to start walking unaided today, at 18 months. We suspect that he's Benin able to do so for a while, but couldn't be bothered!

Great stuff there, Benticore.

This thread is killing me.

I'm waiting for somebody to put up a picture of a tapeworm.

All your kids are cute, Benticore, but I have never wanted to pinch a baby's cheeks more than I do his. What a precious expression!

I gotta find some pics of my kids when they aren't crying and post them here.
