Madden Online Quitters

(Posted this over at OS as well, but I'm so ticked off at the moment, that I figured I'll share the joy at my favorite game site here as well.)

Best game of Madden I've ever played. Dallas vs Green Bay. I'm Dallas. This guy is *good*. He stops me on my first possession, comes back and scores a TD. I have to fight hard to get a FG on my next possession. 7-3 to the Packers. A few possessions later, as I'm trying to figure out how to stop Green, he takes it in for 14-3 at the half.

In the second, I find a hole in his defense. He's not covering the TE. A couple of passes to Campbell later, it's 14-10. Of course, by then, he steps up his passing game and I screw up with Newman and gives him an easy touchdown. 21-10, and I'm thinking it's over.

A few passes to Campbell later (still wide open, his LBs and Safeties can't stop him!). I manage to run in and make it 21-17. Thinking I probably should've gone for 2, but don't, lucky for me as he guessed that I would and was in a 4-3 on the extra point.

I stop him around mid-field and I get the ball back with a little over 2 minutes left on the clock. One pass to Keyshawn, and a couple to Glenn later, I'm closing in on his goalline. Taking it slow to leave as little time left on the clock as possible. I'm down on the 5 yard line with 4 fresh downs in front of me.

I've played pretty much the whole game using the I formation only to confuse him as to if I'm going to call run or pass.

First down. I formation. run for 2.5 yards.
Second down. I formation. run for maybe 1 yard.

Now I'm nervous. 15 seconds left on the clock.

Third down. Goalline formation.

Playaction. Pass to the corner of the endzone. TOUCHDOWN!!

24-21 me with 12 seconds left on the clock.

I squib kick it. Manage to somehow kick it out of bounds, so he gets great field position.

He throws a bomb. Pass defended.
He throws a bomb. INTERCEPTED BY NEWMAN! (Newman, all is forgiven for when you screwed up in the playoffs last year...)

Suddenly, I see the message on screen:

"Opponents controller is no longer connected - please wait".

Thinking he'd thrown his controller (I would've most likely done the same in that situation), I wait patiently that he will reconnect and he does.

I go to special teams, select QB Kneeldown and get ready for the last play of the game, maybe two, as he has one timeout left.

snap the ball - feeling absolutely great for having been lucky enough to have won this game.

Then the $#$&*#&$ quits the game.

"Do you want to continue against the CPU?"

Tempted to post his gamertag. I have yet to get credit for the game and I'm more than a little ticked off at the moment.

Said it before, and I''ll say it again, this is why I never play pick up games against random opponents. Too many clowns out there and I don''t have time to waste on ''em. Feel good about the great game, Mag. Nice comeback there.

Better the clown you know, that''s what I always say!

Post the tag so we all don''t have to go through it as well. We should keep a list of quitter...

Thats too bad - I got my copy yesterday and I havent had time to play it yet. I have yet to really get into ESPN either, but the coupleof scrimmage games against the AI were tons of fun although the game play is distinctly different from Madden and it is tough to unlearn some old habits...

I''ve had the same thing happen as a winning FG crosses through the uprights. Now I play either one of you guys or the computer.

I wish these online services would do something about this. I''ve been on the fence about subscribing to LIVE for a while (and the 2 month voucher with ESPN 2K5 is really tempting) but stories like this really make me not to want to bother. I mean, they can''t really penalize everyone who drops because who knows.. maybe their cable dropped or their power went out. I don''t see why the game shouldn''t count just because the other user left. What they should do is prompt the user still in the game if they would like to force a forfeit on the other player. But if nothing else, there has to be a way to record quits so it''s part of the user''s stats. Or if they rack up multiple quits over a short period of time then they somehow get penalized. Or if nothing else, provide a feedback system like what Ebay uses.

Quits and drops are counted on people''s records. You can see them before agreeing to play someone.

They also have a feedback system on Xbox Live, but I''m not sure they actually *do* anything with the feedback. I''ve submitted negative comments about people I''ve played, but I''m tempted to believe it has no effect. Now, if they started policing this and taking it seriously, it could be really helpful. Before I play a match against someone, I''d like to see all feedback for that user. Kind of like, yeah, eBay. That would be most helpful.

Did you finish the game (2 plays, right?) against the CPU? If you did, then you should have credit. If you didn''t... I think it either doesn''t count at all or only counts as a quit on his record.

(Disclaimer: Of course, I may be getting this completely crossed up with ESPN.)

Update: Yep, finished the game against the CPU and got credit for it. Kudos to EA for getting it right!!

But the question is.. did he get credited a loss?

Wait? you paused the game and went to post this then came back to it vs cpu??

Good read Magnus. I''m glad your hard-earned victory counted.

I believe he should have got credited with both a ""loss"" (a reflection of your abilities) and a ""quit"" (a reflection of your sportsmanship).

looking at his record now (RagedTheReal1 if you want to add him to your Xbox ban list) and it looks like he got credited a ""quit"" and a ""loss"". Woohoo

All right! Maybe I should be playing Madden if they deal out the appropriate punishment on asshats. That''s pretty snazzy.

I''m pretty sure that ESPN handles things pretty much the exact same way.

Okay, then that settles it for me then... looks like I''ll be getting LIVE. I guess first I need to go out get the wireless Xbox hookup.

You can get a nifty router at Best Buy for 99 dollars for the wireless - just plug it in and play. It''s actually called wireless game router or something to that effect.

- Spy

Ya, I was looking at getting that but everytime I go there to take a closer look they''re sold out. I have a feeling that the device is just going to be the wireless component to the Xbox. I think I''m still gonna need to get something to plug into my cable router to make it wireless (it''s just a D-link 4-port router).

[edit]
By the way Spy.. you still living in good ole Dead Fred? I grew up there.. but I''ve been living in northern VA the last 5 or so years. My folks still live there so I go back occasionally.

He is duly marked in the ""jackass"" category...

The only appropriate punishment is going round to these people''s houses and hurting them.

Yep live in Fredericksburg - great town for the family. The Best Buy down here had a ton of those wireless hook ups for the X-box - I already had a wireless network installed so all I did was plug it into the Xbox and turned it on and I was good to go.

Yep, wireless is nothing short of a gift from God...

I think Gabe covered this one already.

Ya, Fredericksburg has grown up a lot since I lived there. That Central Park place is pretty insane. I remember when all that was over there was the Spotsylvania Mall and across Rt3 was a golf course and farmland... nothing else. Now there''s like 100 restaurants and a 1000 different stores.

As for the wireless... I suppose I''ll have to shell out $100 for the wireless Xbox thing and hope someone makes a little do-hickey that''ll plug into a port on my router and make that port wireless. I''d rather keep my PC''s hardwired if I can instead of going with a completely wireless router.

[edit]
Okay, I think this is what I need. Anyone ever tried this before?
[/edit]

I''d rather keep my PC''s hardwired if I can instead of going with a completely wireless router.

Most all wireless routers still have at least four wired ports included with them so that doesn''t need to change. Get a linksys wireless router and a Game adapter (about half as much as the official Xbox one) and off you go. Keep in mind their console wireless adapter thing can be a Female Doggo to get working on a secure wireless network.

Silly rabbit, you don''t need that d-link, You need this d-link. Wireless and a 4-port hard-wired router. No real point in getting anything faster than 802.11b, as your broadband connection is the bottleneck.

--edit-- Stupid Certis and his fast fingers!

Ahh cool, thanks guys.. I had no idea the wireless routers included ports too. It''s been a while since I shopped for one (about 3 years) and I don''t recall ever seeing that. Okay.. so I guess now it comes down to which is better? Looking at customer reviews it seems both the D-Link and Linksys suffer from the problem where you have to power it off and on a lot to maintain the connection. Are you guys using these routers that you''re linking to?

I have the Linksys Wireless-B router, I''ve run it for about a year now and I have a few clients who use them with no problems. One client who''s office is 100% wireless has had it running for over a month straight now with no wireless connection problems to speak of. Remember, people come online to complain, not to praise

I''m using Netgear and haven''t had any problems whatsoever. Don''t even remember the last time I rebooted, and I have two of them. One for DSL and one for cable modem. (http://www.netgear.com/products/wire...)
