Not another school shooting

And another Korean ffs.

OAKLAND, Calif. — One wounded woman cowered in the bushes after the gunman opened fire on the campus of a small Christian university. One student hid in a locked classroom as the shooter banged on the door. Another heard the shots and ran to safety.

All within an hour Monday, police said, a 43-year-old former student named One L. Goh walked into Oikos University, and began a rampage that left seven people dead and three people wounded, trapped some in the building and forced others to flee for their lives.

Dude was 43. This was a shooting at a school, but it wasn't really a 'school shooting' like we're used to thinking about them. This wasn't a teenager running amok because of being socially ostracized, it was a fully adult man.

We should probably just disarm all ethnic Koreans. Just to be safe.

lol.

I told my wife about this last night and she said "why are all Korean men with guns so crazy?". To this I replied "Honey, he was off the boat Korean, a heavy Christian, and a nursing student to boot. If we had to decide who he was more like, who do you think most people are going to choose?"

I slept on the couch.

Oh man. You had to say that? Lucky she didn't throw stinging nettle into your smoothie this morning...

She said "well, he obviously wasn't Christian because a Christian wouldn't act like that.".

lol

I tried not to mention the Crusades and the Inquisition.... and almost succeeded.

Good thing you didn't know about the recent abortion clinic bombing, either.

You did mention how Christian women always serve their husband as their master, right?

I think that played out a while back...

He may have questionable wisdom, but I highly doubt he has a deathwish.

Not to lighten the thread too far, I am saddened by the tragedy. The guy sounds pretty disturbed.

What? Nobody mentioned the tie-in with the bullying thread?

Apparently Goh went all shooty in part because the other students teased him about his poor mastery of English.

Man, your missus sure has a very short trigger pull.

Um. Korean?

Seven people are dead. It's very sad news indeed.

This is maybe not the most tasteful joke to make in a thread about fatal shootings.

They wind 'em tight in Hanguk.

Fun fact: The same passage of Ephesians talks about how husbands should love their wives the way Christ loved his followers.

Part of me wonders if there was some meaning in that. Something about how Americans choose to "speak," or something.

My understanding is that the majority of the students there are Korean Americans and Korean Americans from the Los Angeles area (yes, I know, Oakland is very far north of that) have a reputation for being extremely cliquish and cruel -- particularly to OTB Koreans. This aspect of the story doesn't surprise me in the slightest.

But at age 43, it makes me wonder if the guy was getting revenge on the bullies through their kids. I mean if its a highschool, he was their 25 years ago.

Doubtful. He's a Korean national. Like I said. Off the boat.

I doubt he has any connection to the place other than his time as a student there.

He had been a student there until very recently; it wasn't like a '20 years later' type thing. He was expelled in January for undisclosed reasons.

You're right, actually. My apologies, folks.

Police reports said he was a naturalized US citizen. He couldn't have been too off the boat considering that process takes at least five years.

I've only had limited experience with that subculture, but what I've seen corroborates. Much more in-group/out-group than the friends I grew up with.

Even more important is the totality of the cultural dynamics involved.

He was 43 years old, unmarried, no kids, could not speak English, and had just gotten kicked out of an "admit anyone with $3000/semester check" evangelical college. In Korean society, that's about as low on the social ladder as one can get. And if my considerable experience with Korean American society offers any insight, I am pretty sure that his classmates were almost certainly merciless in their disrespect of him.

Korean folks in those situations generally just grab a handful of pills and a bottle of Johnny Walker Blue, but he, apparently, had been living in the states long enough to recognize the opportunity to get national attention.

Yeah.

In a NPR segment this morning I thought I heard them say he was expelled for possession of a firearm while on campus. They also went on to mention a "troubled past" but I didn't hear any other details.

They probably got him confused with anyone from a Korean movie.
