Dwarf Fortress you sick temptress, you!

I'm gonna give up on that map. The whole lake freezes, and then take about 10 minutes to thaw out in spring.

Cool!

Embarked on a 2x2 with a stream nad a volcano. It said there was some soil and clay so I thought I'd be able to do alright.

The volcano in the bottom left is a tube of magma with a thin crust of obsidian that extends 12 z levels above ground level so If I choose to I have a permanent way to keep out invaders and migrants.

Oh, and look in the top left... My first Adamantine spire! Surface Adamantine

It starts 12 levels above ground and I can see it goes down at least 40 z levels before my visibility fades out.

This may be a fun map... or a 'fun' map...

I'm a sad panda

I think the surface adamantine and the map starting with slade visible has broken something. The dwarves won't mine or channel. and for a map that JUST started 40 FPS is kind of pants for a 2x2 embark...

Guess i have to chalk this up as a failed experiment.

I'm an action figure!

Looks like there's a big update that just got pooped out.

Thanks for the heads up. I might have to start a new fort later today and see what's new(ly broken).

And I will have to wait for your painful failures in order to decide if I have the gumption to attempt another legendary civ. The adventure mode sounds kind neat tho. Haven't really tried that yet.

Also, you guys know they have a podcast, right? No updates since November, but still... interesting listening.

I'm on a very long game-buying ban and I just downloaded the latest Dwarf Fortress. Is there a graphical upgrade? I see on Rock Paper Shotgun they got this image:

It's a tileset that replaces the ASCII characters with actual images.

Ooh. It looks pretty. Any idea where I can find such a tileset or should I just Google for it?

This is maybe more than what you're looking for, but you can try the Lazy Newb Pack as an all-in-one place get DF tools.

I've heard it mentioned in a couple places that existing tilesets work fine with the new version. I don't know for sure, I never use any.

It makes sense. I imagine any new things would just remain ASCII.

Thanks guys. I so do like the pretties.

I'll be leaving this alone for a while. I have Crusader Kings 2 to steal all my time. Usually with Toady there is a massive update like this, then there will be 3 or 4 updates over the next month. I'll come check out this new version then.

Same here. If for no other reason than it will take some time to squash the majority of the bugs.

Wait for therapist to get updated and someone to make sure that a new lazy newb pack is up, etc.

I keep on hoping the new big patch would be along the lines of, "Interface API created! Create your own UI for the game!"

Anyone care to speculate on how long I should wait?

Don't hold your breath. From what I've seen Toady is only interested in putting into the game what he wants and he seems to be fine with the interface the way it is. I would love to be proved wrong though. Frankly I'm surprised someone hasn't made a Minecraft-DF mashup yet.

It's good to hear the new version is finally out. My new PC can handle DF pretty well but I"ve been playing other games recently.

I usually wait for Lazy Newb Pack to get updated before I download new versions anyways.

Hah, as if.

Dwarves still, after all these years, don't know how to replace their clothes when they wear out.

Fix bugs? Yeah right.

I'm surprised you haven't gotten on this game sooner, it seems like it would be up your alley.

I just grabbed the new version tonight and look forward to inadvertently killing off my ascii characters.

Wait, I thought that one was fixed? Do they still just rot off and new clothes are layered on? I could have sworn Toady fixed it.

The first bugfix release has arrived. Unfortunately, you'll have to restart -- even if your save seems fine, it's likely that it is dying a slow death due to corrupted buildings. Hopefully a compatibility break won't be necessary again for a while.

There was a save corruption bug in the release, so a new bugfix release is out: http://www.bay12games.com/dwarves/

Isn't that like "calling" that the sun will rise tomorrow?
Has the merchant ghost problem been fixed yet?

I haven't seen anything saying so, which makes me sad as it is my No 1 gripe.

Wait, I thought that one was fixed? Do they still just rot off and new clothes are layered on? I could have sworn Toady fixed it.

Well, it certainly wasn't fixed the last time I tried to play. The date on my savegames was 5/9/2011.

So, apparently the new version is less Dwarf Fortress and more Dwarf Vampire Fortress. A good 20% of all immigrants turn out to be vampires. Kind of amusing at first, but it gets old very quickly. Hopefully this gets patched to less of a Twilight situation.

One thing I really despise about the new squad system is that when you select people to put into a squad position, it doesn't remove them from the list. So when you go to select people for the next squad you can easily mess up and recruit someone already filling a position. In which case it yanks them out of that one and puts them in the new squad, creating a gap you have to go back and fix. I've taken to just giving dwards nicknames like MACE1 in an effort to keep them organized. On the bright side sparring actually works now and doesn't involve filling a room with orphan limbs and teeth.

In the top right it should say that a dwarf is already in a squad.

Thanks for the tip. I never would have noticed that normally. The interface is hard to manage. I don't mine the complexity of the game, I play Aurora and in some ways Aurora outdoes DF in terms of detail. But Aurora is organized into spreadsheets and everyone understands how the work right? Essentially, input into Box A and change the figures in Box B.

But using some parts of the DF interface is a lot like trying to play Ultima without the manual. Once you learn the hotkeys things like building structures are much easier. But a lot of things get too repetitive. Like building walls with a maximum size of 10X10. Toady is fixing these issues, but glacially slow. And interspersed with new content like donator creatures (which are pretty neat) and Vampires which just add to the pile of issues.
