Great Big Tracts of Land, or How I Bought a Castle

Could you set the reservation with the current owners, at whatever rate they'd charge, but not actually pay for it until Teneman buys it?

Alternately, you could explain what's going on, and set a tentative reservation based on the closing being successful?

That's probably not the best idea. The deal isn't officially closed yet. So some random third party calling the staff, who may not even know that their employer is being sold yet, and asking for accommodations based on the deal wouldn't be a good thing.

Don't worry, if that comes down to the final obstacle between having PenCon at the castle, we'll figure something out.

This is awesome. Sounds like I have a reason to visit Ohio now.

Good luck with the purchase, Teneman. I went to a castle built by a robber baron in the foothills of the Shenandoah Valley (in Virginia) a few years ago. I can't imagine what it's like taking care of a place like that.

Was hoping it was maybe close to Toledo on the off chance (wouldn't happen anyway) that I find myself visiting Toledo to work with my client contacts. But no, looks to be a healthy drive.

Yeah, we have top men on it (top. men.). If it works, it works. If not, then there's always next year and also we'll be able to put together a non-pencon related activity for sure. Hell, I might still be the person putting it together. So no worries, regardless of what happens, I can safely say that as long as Teneman's deal gets finalized, there will be awesome things afoot in a castle.

About three hours. We were living in Toledo when we first found and visited the castle, in fact.

Oh, here:

;-)

Thank you, that is exactly what went through my head too. (and FTFY)

Actually it was a reference to this:

Whatever happens at this castle, I'll be there. I mean, how can something not be better at a castle?

"I can't find my pants"
"Did you check the blacksmiths cottage or the hedge maze?"
*enthusiastically high fives*

So Teneman, are you nervous about running an Inn? Is this a new adventure for you or have you done something like this before?

Also, did I hear it has a bar?

This is absolutely a new adventure for us, but I'm not nervous in the least. Don't let the sickly green tint to my face and the non-stop queasiness fool you, that's just my normal look

Seriously though, the wife and I are both ecstatic, excited, and terrified all at the same time. Pretty much the mix of feelings you want to have at the outset of any good adventure.

And there is absolutely a Ye Olde Tavern in the castle. It's one of the areas that I have the most plans for, in fact.

I would gladly offer my web and photographic services as well after the closing if you desired, since the state of the current site is, at best, poor.

"Parry, Parry, Thrust, Thrust, Good!"

Side note: I saw "tracts of land" and was hoping this was about bosoms, but a castle is just as good, if not better.

So should this thread change to be the Castle Catch All?

Meh. Certis will start posting pictures of other castle and things will just get out of hand. Let's let Teneman hang onto this for now, at least =)

So it's on 50 acres that means we need to build a trebuchet, right? I mean, you'll have room.

Can we build other castles nearby and play Rampart?

Castle thread? Okay!

You do have one of these on the premises, right Teneman?

Really cool. Must be a dream come true. For me it would. Except some headaches around business and such. But worth it.
Of course you will need a person to do 'stuff' for you, a well paid job of course. I am awesome at doing 'stuff', perfect match!

Anyway, I skipped a few pages, but did anyway think of starting a scary GWJ community living in there? lol

Wow. Sorry for the OT, but who is the cute redhead? She looks just like the girl I was dating before I met my wife.

Wow that makes me feel creepy. She looks just like the girl I dated which on the one hand is hot, but was born the same year that I was dating said girl which makes me feel icky inside like a creepy old man.

EDIT: Sorry to the OP for the sidestep. Once again good luck with the castle. I'll once again point you to the experts at running a country inn just to try to make some of my inadvertent creepiness dissipate.

My creepiness is infectious.

Among other things...

Oogaba Manor?

Funny enough, I just saw in the sidebar "Castle Catch-All" and wondered if a new thread had been made for this. Alas, it was for some show I've not heard of and don't seem interested in.

I'm trying to jump on the bandwagon here with keeping up of all the fun new things happening, but I feel like the wagons are going 65mph and my scooter only goes 25 while I'm trying to jump off and hang onto a wagonside before they all pass me by.

Are you trying to go for a medieval/ren theme completely, or is it mixed theme/historical-wise? Will it be more casual theme-wise? (ATM sounds more casual, though you probably could get themed murder-and-dinners)

I'm wondering about the haunted thing though. Not sure if there is some non-law thing about advertising haunted when it's not - kinda like false advertising? Unless you advertise that it's not *truly* haunted, but it's for fun (like haunted houses are fake, but anyway) Though! Depending on its history, who knows?

I'm guessing the castle has a kitchen? Is it one of the really cool ones with a fireplace/large kettle, and a roasting pit, and a brick oven, as well as moderny things? I totally vote for people making pizzas (and other fun things) in brick ovens during our weekend there.
Also: If it does have a kitchen, can I bring my fudge ingredients with me? I can make more there, since I know we'd run out after the first day or so.

What's all included with this castle? Are there other buildings on the property? Is there a hedge maze? (omg hedge maze is such an awesome idea) You were probably getting the internet domain name/website as well?

(sidenote: I do graphic design/web design; graduated for it last year. Not sure if you got people in mind for your site, or if you'd want someone who hasn't done much but the schoolwork experience-wise to help with it)

--- ran out of memory. Don't remember what else I was going to post.

If you need any advice point of sale wise for the restaurant/bar area let me know, it's kind of what I do now

I thought I saw something about brewing beer on sight. And also mead. That would get me to Ye Olde Tavern.
