Great Big Tracts of Land, or How I Bought a Castle

My favorite logo doesn't have a raven in it so I didn't rate it. Put some ravens in it though and it would be miles ahead of the rest. It's the Client Ranked 6th one.

My second favorite goes to the wood one, but I think it would be better if it were made to look like stone instead. Black and gray, like granite or something. It would be sweet.

Every goodjer should buy a castle. That is all.

Agreed on both counts. The first one you mentioned we're likely to buy anyway, not as a logo, but to use on mugs, hats, etc. The second one I've already requested he work up as a stone sign. I love that one, I can easily imagine it hanging on two rusted chains outside an old D&D inn.

So many possibilities for silly slogans...
Mi castle es su castle
A man's castle is his home

I hope that logo is going to go on bottles and tankards!

Am I the only one that missed the link to the page with the logos? I have gone back through the old posts and still don't see it.

First, the logo contest is starting to gain some entries. LogoMyWay has a feature where you can allow friends and family to check out the entries and rate those they like, acting as a sort of focus group. We'd love to have your input. The contest just finished its first day, with six days to go. Please feel free to head over here and let us know what you like.

Congrats on the castle, that's really awesome and is probably the coolest thing I'm going to see all day

Clearly the next thing that needs to be done is building a Mage Guild and naming the castle "Lord Ironfist's Keep" or "Lord Gryphonheart's Inn".

An Englishman's home is his castle.

So, in a manner of speaking, I did!

"Put a bird on it"?

Congrats!!!!

Jake and I take the dogs hiking from Old Man's Cave to Cedar Falls and back at least 1 or 2 weekends a month.

On that note, will the outside "cabins" allow pets?

We will be visiting FOR SURE!

Spruce it up. Make it pretty.

And congrats, Teneman! I'd love to check it out, with or without birds, if only it wasn't so far away.

Nice! Glad to see there's someone that comes through so often! We love Old Man's Cave ourselves. Not sure we've hit Cedar Falls though.

The current owners have a no pets policy. We're looking pretty seriously at changing that if we can, at least in some of the outskirt areas. Don't hold me to anything, but it's a possibility.

This is great, Teneman! I would drive to Ohio for an S&T there. I will even bring my battleaxe when I do!!

I admit, I gave the highest vote to the bird with the bow-tie. Raven wears a bow-tie now. Bow-ties are cool.

We can pickle that!!

I too am a fan of the bow-tied Raven. Sadly, I found myself heavily outvoted. Even the seven year old would only toss me a sympathetic "Well, I guess the tie is kind of neat Daddy."

Pretty sure that Ravens are about it for rockin the bow-tie.

It's the dream of the 1890s.

Ok, about having Pencon here.

A lot of people are excited (I am too) and we're working on it right now. Teneman gave me a really awesome price on the place so it's very doable from that perspective. The problems we're running into are of a timely nature. He doesn't own this place until May so he kind of doesn't have much of a say in who gets booked for when until then. The weekend that we're thinking might get booked out from under us. There's also some issues related to drinks but I think we've already found a way around those.

But rest assured, we're working on it and we hope to have some news for you guys one way or the other within a week or two.

Keep in mind, if it isn't pencon we'll do SOMETHING here. It won't cost us that much to rent the place in the off season so we'll get something going regardless.

sorry to hijack your thread =)

To get back on track, I'm all for the raven with the bow tie but only if he has a top hat and a monocle.

That would be aces!

I have already been given wife approval for this year's PenCon. If this is at a castle, she may have to come along.

That would immediately get a 5-star vote from me.

This thread makes me feel that I cannot consider myself successful until the day I own a castle or better.

But seriously, Teneman, that place looks incredible. I can't wait to see your improvements and make the pilgrimage.

Have you run a hotel before? If not, it may be prudent to hire people with experience or find a hoteliers forum and follow advice. No need to learn from your own mistakes.

Hey, you - i was down to go but you had to extend the trip longer than I could(babby #2 was arriving shortly after!).

I think the only possible way this could be cooler would be if you were to buy a castle on top of a massive underground bunker of some kind, perhaps a missile silo.

You asked and so you shall have it.

That is cool, but it's not cooler. That's a missile silo, but to be cooler than a castle, it would have to have a castle, too. Castle = silo, so you'd have to have both, sort of 1 + 1 = 2.

A huge subterranean lair on a tropical island would be about 3 on that scale. Parting lava curtains protecting the inner sanctum add +1. Super-hot assistant (gender of choice) adds another +1.

Give it a shot. I talked to the wife tonight and we may be taking one of the cottages and filling it with out babbies for the weekend. There could be baby goodjers all over.

(super excited for you to make it though, SN)

Just joshing with you Sally. We shall coordinate closer to the date!

Could you set the reservation with the current owners, at whatever rate they'd charge, but not actually pay for it until Teneman buys it?

Alternately, you could explain what's going on, and set a tentative reservation based on the closing being successful?
