Guild Wars Revival

Cool, just give me a yell, here or by PM.

Is there a semi-regular night for this? I think I need to get back into the guild.

Nah, it all totally fell by the wayside.

My personal Starcraft 2 frenzy has come to an end, so I'm planning on getting back in again, but I'm so far ahead time-zone wise that the chances of us crossing paths is minimal.

Would be cool to try get something up and running though, if you need in the guild post your character name and I will send an invite.

Same here. SC2 sucked me in. And since I've been feeling the MMO itch again, I started up WAR again. I'm sure I'll be back into GW at some point before GW2, as it seems to always be a game I come back to.

I actually had a look at going into WAR again, but the updates in the time since I've played are way huge. I can't even afford to update LOTRO, and that's free.

Going to be in Guild Wars a bit this weekend if anyone is around.

Hehe, it's 'Talk like a Pirate weekend.' That could be fun.

So I'm guessing that I will be using mostly NPC henchmen to go through most of this game? The world really feels empty at times, or only solo oriented players are left. It's disappointing and tough to really get into the game. I bought the trilogy, so if anyone feels like getting together to play send me a PM here. I'm on Pacific time currently.

Yeah, sadly the revivial tapered out fast. I was on this weekend, but I'm many hours ahead of you. I saw a few people in the guild had been active in the last couple of weeks though. If you want in on the guild let me know, you may cross paths with people.

Arena.Net are going hard at reviving this game before GW2. More Canthan content is on the way, and:

You can look forward to filling out your party with Heroes as another feature of the free update build that will include Embark Beach.

Seven hero parties. Awesome.

Oh wow. The possibilities for that...

Yep. Think I may need to jump into my old level 20s I've forgotten how to play when that goes live.

So my friends and I are looking for a weekly co-op game, and are considering Guild Wars. I'm curious how Guild Wars plays out. Does it feel MMO-like, or could one conceivably pursue it like a long story-focused co-op game?

We're not interested in the stunted mechanics, or grinding of an MMO, but GW seems a bit different than that. In fact, some of the criticisms stating that it isn't a real MMO makes it sound appealing to us. We're all taking a hiatus from the JUGGERNAUT right now.

A few more questions for the GW Illuminati:

1. How's the loot? Call us little girls, but we like dressing up our Little Me's.
2. Hows the game play? Is it responsive, and are the mechanics varied and compelling?

Thanks.

It plays a bit more like tactical Diablo 2 with some MMO tossed in. Except that the chat rooms you meet up in are shared zones themselves. All fighting areas are instanced, there are lots of pretty gear options, with dyes, too. Just take a look at some of the GuildWiki armor sets: http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Necr...

I personally feel the combat gameplay is more varied than the-game-who-shall-not-be-mentioned. But it might just be a personal preference. There's a lot more customization with character abilities. A lot of magic the gathering style tactical planning. When you have a good group you can really do some amazing co operative team build stuff.

Great guides here: http://guildwars.wikia.com/wiki/Cate...

I have good news and bad news.

First the good. It is a great co-op game. The story is decent, although the voice acting is pretty horrible, and has a suitably bleak and epic nature if you watch the cut scenes. And for such an ancient game the art style is great and it's nice to look at. Having a good group gelling well during a mission is awesome.

Second the bad. Loot isn't much of a plus point. There are no uber weapons or armour, you do get cool unique weapons, but they are not super powerful. Uniques have their own skin, but can be reproduced using Insignia with special collector weapons. Uniques do occasionally drop, but usually need to be farmed. Most have a, IIRC, 10-20% drop rate.

Armour doesn't drop in a usable state, you need to get it crafted by an armourer. Armour you pick up gets salvaged for components and Runes that you can use for your own. Once you get to Level 20 you get max level armour and it doesn't get any better functionally. You do get fancier armour, but it has the same stats, it just looks different. You get some really sought after armours, but it's just dress up. Prestige armours need expensive components, or a lot of farming.

What a lot of people collect is Skills. These are the cornerstone of your character and are far more important than loot. Elite skills get captured from bosses and the Skill collector titles are pretty well respected in the game. It's not something you can show off, but being able to put together any deck of skills you need is cool.

*edit*

Just one further note. I don't tend to stick with an MMO for longer than 3 or so months, I have not ever had a point where I didn't have Guild Wars installed on my PC since I first started playing.

I'm not always playing, but I'm always coming back for a bit. Take that for what it's worth.

2. Hows the game play? Is it responsive, and are the mechanics varied and compelling?

Here's my take:

1. GW has some of the more innovative mechanics in the MMO market right now. It's very similar to a collectible card game in that you can create a lot of synergy depending on what skills you take. If you're tired of one strategy, you can always switch to an entirely different build. Secondary professions also give you more customization. For example, melee characters can pick up some magic or extra healing, while casters can pick up some of the defensive skills of a ranger or warrior.

2. There is grind but it's optional. You can grind vanity titles, armor and weapons, but the main storyline is pretty straightforward, as is PVP.

3. The good news about loot is it's easy to deck out your character with really solid gear. The bad news is the best looking gear is expensive, so you're going to need to grind out some gold and in some cases rare materials like gems.

3. I personally think the game's combat is very responsive. You're always fighting multiple opponents, and your enemies are far less braindead than the average MMO mob. Enemy assassins will try to slip by your frontline, warriors will block you, and casters will bombard you from far away. Yes, you'll likely be fighting all 3 types of mobs in an average battle. There are also plenty of effects to use or watch out for - bleeding, burning, illusionary damage, etc.

1) The loot in GW isn't that interesting. As others have said, the game makes it relatively easy to acquire max stats gear, which is good because it eliminates any need to grind, but not so good because you won't be looking to upgrade. This is not to say that you won't be interested in the loot from mobs. There are runes, inscriptions and weapon parts that are useful that you will be collecting. Also, there are very good drops out there (like a superior vigor rune) that you might get that is worth a lot of cash.

For dress up, all armour is made by various crafters around the world. The guild wiki link before gives you a taste of it. There is plenty of variety, some more expensive to make than others.

2) The game play in GW is reason I keep coming back. It feels rather MMOish - you have an auto attack, and you use skills to compliment it. However, the system of having 8 usable skills at a time makes deciding what to use in combination with what interesting. Also, mobs tend to use skills in combos as well, so when you're fighting it pays to know what the enemy is doing so you can avoid/counter it. You don't need to be worried about it when you're just starting out in GW, but the skill system is so deep - it's excellent. I just put together a new mesmer build last week. Had to capture a skill from a boss to do it, but it was so worth it. My hero mesmer is great now.

I can't believe it took me nearly 5 years to try out a Mesmer properly. What a great class!

My first was a Monk which is satisfying, but the skill interplay and tactical planning for a Mesmer is something else. Even at level, ummm 8 or 9 it's a deep class.

At its core, the game is a deck building game similar to Magic the Gathering. The real fun of the game is that "A-HA!" moment when you come up with the right builds to make a tough mission/dungeon doable.

Loot has less emphasis in GW, though having appropriate gear is still a good thing. Unlike WoW, there are max-level weapons, and they are reasonably accessible to get. You can farm them off bosses, make them from parts, or buy them from other players. You might have a different gear and weapon sets to complement different skill builds, but a max level item you acquire is never in danger of becoming obsolete such as in an MMO like WoW.

The mechanics of different builds can vary wildly, if you want them to. In WoW, your healing priest plays pretty much the same way from dungeon to dungeon. In GW, you can play your class relatively straight up, or you might switch between radically different builds to suit different dungeons. Once you get far enough into the game, you can switch your secondary profession in towns, which really opens up possibilities.

For example, a Monk/Necro combo gives you the ability to heal while sucking life force from enemies and using "wells" to recharge the mana of the party.

A Monk/Ele give you the ability to throw down defensive Earth wards to make your healing job easier.

A Monk/Ritualist can throw down a res bomb, and res the entire party at once.

On this page you can find links to see the sheer magnitude of the types of skills. The only catch is you have to choose just eight to use in any particular dungeon, so it's all about using builds.

Thanks. That was all very helpful. Looks like we're giving it a shot.

Is this still happening? Looking to learn something about this game. And is vanilla GW ($20) enough, or should I drop $40 for the GOTY edition that includes Factions and Nightfall?

I'd try the trial to see if you like it and then buy the GOTY edition if you do. Factions adds a lot of cool PVP options, and the storyline in Nightfall is one of the best I've played in a MMOG, outside of the latest Cataclysm quests. The settings for both expansions is also cool and a welcome break from the standard Medieval European fantasy fare.

I've been playing with this noob-friendly guild: http://costumedaggression.guildporta...

I hit max level for the first time ever and capped my first elite skill ever. I am also Closer to the Stars!

I decided to play this again for a bit to prep for GW2. is anyone else still playing?

I've been playing here and there. Going through the Prophecies Campaign. Just made it past The Sundering cinematic.

I thought this was interesting, and a laugh: https://forum.guildwars.com/forum/fo...

Less than one in two thousand players is on win9x. That's old.

I put in a few hours every now and then. It's still good fun, but I have limited time and many distractions.

I know this is a bit of necroposting, but I'm not going to make a "revival of the revival" thread. I've been wondering if anyone still plays at all (I believe I'm on the European severs). Used to play a ton a few years ago, but never quite finished Prophecies (stuck at Ring of Fire), didn't touch Factions, did about half of Nightfall and hadn't started EotN.
When GW2 was released, I linked the accounts and was surprised to see only 3 points! So since then, I've gone back and played a bit of EotN in order to reach the Hall of Monuments.

Anyone still playing? Do we have an active guild? Anyone want to team up and beat EotN in order to get shiny toys in GW2?

I can answer the guild question. Most of GWJ was in Silens Tamen Mortifer, which still exists and has a fully stocked guild hall for convenience. The membership roster lists only two or three people that have logged in during the last 5 months so there aren't any hidden hardcore players in there

Everyone who's left was promoted to officer, so we can still get new people into the guild and if we need something that requires the guild master I'm sure we can get Devilstick to log in and do it.

I've been intending to log in and get Hero builds set up for about a week now, but that week has been lovely Spring weather so I've spent most of it laboring in the yards. The wind, cold, and rain are coming back today though so maybe I'll get somewhere on that this weekend.

I'm totally game to team up, we just need to set up a time to get started. I know my morning play window overlaps your late evening one, so I'm sure something can work out.

I've still got a couple of EotN missions to do, but the thing that always keeps me from going back to GW1 properly is relearning the game more than spamming all my skills, and putting together a new spec.

Definitely I have all 3 major EotN quests to do, so basically, we just need to set up a time. Do we have a Steam GW1/GW2 group?
