Wait, did I miss today?

Not that I know of. Should still be another three hours before everybody's really on.

It's supposed to be 3PM PST on Saturday. Let's all try to be on at 7PM PST because of the confusion?

Yeah, my bad for not updating the OP with the Saturday time. Bishop and I were on for a bit, and I'll probably be back on sometime around 7.

7 PST?

7 PST?

Woohoo! Nice job, Thin_J.

Sorry, I can't make today, gents. Have fun for me!

GGs. I was pleasantly surprised at how good the 'newbies' were; close matches.

Good times guys. And bonus points to Bishop and Lupus for sticking with it so ridiculously late

You guys said MK is next?

Yes, MK is next week.

Did 7:00 PM PST work for everyone last night, or would 3:00 PM PST be better? I had figured that 7 on a Saturday night would be prime going out time, but maybe I was wrong...

I think most of us are old and boring though.

Whatever time works for me, if I can't make it, so be it.

3PST is normally better for me on Saturday. I usually work at 6am on Sunday morning and I'm EST, so... you know. Bed earlyish. But like Obirano I say go for what works for the most people. My work schedule is silly.

I updated the OP to reflect the days/times. This week we'll try 3 PM PST on Saturday, hopefully this will be easier for both EST folks and PST folks.

I have the next few weeks scheduled, based on the responses to the Google form I posted. Surprisingly, the #2 game people have access to is Street Fighter X Tekken, I didn't expect that. Anyway, here are the next few weeks, based on game availability:

This Week (Mar. 25 - Mar. 31) - Mortal Kombat, obviously
Week of April 4 - Street Fighter X Tekken
Week of April 11 - Blazblue: Continuum Shift EXTEND
Week of April 18 - Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix
Week of April 25 - Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3
Week of May 2 - Super SF4 AE / Street Fighter 3 Third Strike Online

If we try any of these out and people say "man, this sucks, I'm outta here!" then we'll ditch it and go back to Super SF4 AE for that week. SF3 is getting a split week with SF4 because only 3 people said they have it, and that's not enough to warrant 2 days.

I can't remember the last time I played a MK title. If you see me online in MK this week, hit me up and we can practice.

I noticed the majority of players at MLG using a controller. Given the button config and inputs, I wonder if there is an advantage in that. Also, there was some mention online about arcade stick 'desyncing', but I didn't look too much into it.

There's no inherent advantage given that the game is only a 5 button game, and tournaments disallow the use of multi-input single buttons (i.e. mapping RT to A+B+C). Frequently the appearance of lots of pad players has more to do with the community surrounding the game than the game itself. The tournament players tend to pick a couple games, and those are where they focus their efforts. If those games have arcade versions, then you're likely to see a lot of players who prefer stick. Mortal Kombat and Soul Calibur are the only current fighting games that did not get an arcade release, so that lends itself to a wider audience and thus more pad players. Street Fighter, BlazBlue, King of Fighters, and Tekken all get arcade releases well in advance of their home console releases.

This shows in who participates in these events. If you look at the full bracket for the MLG Mortal Kombat event, the only name in there you're likely to recognize is Justin Wong, and that's because he's now part of a group that is participating in every event (even if they're no good at it, look at where he placed). No Gootecks, no Mike Ross, no Aris Bahktanians (thankfully).

I haven't heard about any desyncing issues related to arcade sticks specific to Mortal Kombat. I know that some people claim the wireless sticks have lag issues, maybe that was it?

So for MK, will MK vs DC Universe work? I'll probably skip it otherwise since I'll be gone on Saturday and will be packing on Wednesday for vacation.

No, this is Mortal Kombat 2011, MK vs. DC Universe is a totally separate game.

Have a great vacation! We'll catch you next week for SF X Tekken.

EDIT:
Speaking of next week and SF X Tekken, we have got to try scramble battle when we play, because this looks like insane fun (some NSFW language):

Oh, god, you guys are going to make me learn SFIV, aren't you? Sigh, ok. Glad UMvC3 has made the list.

As for Blazblue -- I have the game, but how do I know if I've got the right version? I recall downloading a version patch, and got the two DLC characters. Does that bring me up to BB:CSE or am I just at BB:CS?

You want Blazblue: Continuum Shift EXTEND. Sadly, unlike Super SF4, the different versions of BB are not compatible with each other, so your copy of Continuum Shift (which had the DLC characters) will not play with EXTEND. The upside is EXTEND comes with everything and the only DLC is extra system voices and colors.

So anybody planning to redbox or buy this (it's $40 new at Amazon), make sure you get Continuum Shift EXTEND.

Ok, so I want Blazblue: Continuum Shift CONTRACT? Am I getting this right?

Does anyone have a streaming setup? It'd be cool to cast these nights on Twitch.

I don't have any streaming hardware, but that is a cool idea.

I have an older capture card somewhere that I might be able to make work. I don't know though, it's been a long time since I used it.

*Amazon has a buy 2 get 1 free sale on certain videogames right now. I thought hey why not.. I'll see what's eligible. First I noticed SFxT. I wasn't super interested in buying it, but at b2g1 pricing I can always trade it in and get roughly what I paid back out as long as I like the other two games. Ok. I'll keep digging. MK: Komplete edition? In there. I liked MK at Penguincon. Not against buying it at all.

Ok, looking for the third game.

And... nothing else. Nothing that I haven't either already played or care about at all.

Phooey.

What about all the other games on the upcoming list? Blazblue EXTEND (or CONTRACT, as 7inch would say)? Ultimate MvC 3?

Any advice for the newbie Mortal Kombat player? I've played a bunch today and read a bit over the past couple days, but I suspect I'm going to be a punching bag for most people tomorrow. Any recommended characters for starting players?

Smoke is pretty good and easy to grasp. Liu Kang is also good.

As for advice, look up a few bread 'n butter combos in the SRK wiki, or on YouTube, and just practice those.

I ended up going with Kenshi and found a good reference on Test Your Might (http://testyourmight.com/threads/ken...), which offers some decent info on MK9, including a good video overview (the 2nd one on the page). So, I understand the theory now, but still need to work more on the execution. I've been using pad so far because it feels easier to press block that way, but I don't know that I'll ever get consistent dashes without using a stick. Not sure which I'll use tonight.

Checked my Blazblue order and it's definitely not EXTEND. Given how little I've played my copy I don't think I can justify picking up the new version, unfortunately. But I'm thinking I'll get Persona 4 Arena when it drops, so I'll save up my Arc System Works learnage for that game.

Cool, obviously the point of this is not to get people to spend money they don't want to spend. I count 4 people who say they have EXTEND, which means I may change that week into a split week, do one day of EXTEND then the 2nd day of Third Strike Online, but I'm going to wait and see if more people fill out the response form.

Since today is Mortal Kombat, this is obligatory:

I'll have BlazBlue (the EXTEND version even...) before that week. And SFxT.

And I'll have Mortal Kombat for Saturday.
