Fighting Game Catch-All

I would also think that the SFIV online scene might be one of the toughest to jump into, given how long it's been out and what a high-skill game it is.

Add to it that many things carry over from 2 and such and you've got people who've playe for over a decade easily.

Yes, but those players rapidly rise up in the brackets and you don't get matched against them. Even without many new players entering the matchmaking, there is still a division. You're not going to get matched against Justin Wong if you've just start playing.

True enough.

Oh sure, of course not. I guess I just find the barrier to entry to that game huge, and fear the prospect of going online. Not to discourage anybody, though! When learning any of these games, going online (even just to get the sh*t kicked out of you) is key, along with all the other ways to practice.

I went online in Super SF4 on Tuesday, and honestly I found it to be about the same as SF x Tekken. My BP is pretty low in that game, so I was getting matched up against people who did all the same silly stuff we've been talking about in the SF x Tekken thread - Jumping shenanigans, abusing easily exploited characters, etc. These things are all difficult to defeat if you don't have the practice against them though.

I guess what I'm saying is I agree, eventually you just have to dive in, take your licks, and learn from what you see. I do hope that these regular fight nights help some folks with that.

EDIT: I've had to postpone my weekend vacation due to weather, so I will be around this weekend, and I am likely to show up at 2:00 tomorrow.

Are going to add SF3 or SSF2THDR to the lineup?

Yes, but I might do a split week for those and some of the ones that fewer people have. It's hard to justify 2 nights of Third Strike when I only count 4 people who have it. This will also likely be the case for U. MvC 3, Tekken 6, and Blazblue, there just aren't enough people who own them or have expressed interest to have 2 nights. I'm working on the next scheduling batch, for now I've just focused on the games lots of people have.

If anybody's at all interested, MLG has fighting games at the event in Columbus running this weekend. There's tournaments for Mortal Kombat, King of Fighters, and Soul Calibur 5.

I plan to have the fighting game stream up on my laptop while I watch SC2 on my other monitors.

I was going to actually go down and watch MK but we have a baby shower this weekend.

Those MK matches are going to be worth watching. The new Mortal Kombat is much less dial-a-combo than previous iterations have been, and you can get really creative with a lot of different characters.

I was originally going to drive up too, but I blew my fun budget for the month on other things and couldn't bring myself to throw a hotel stay on a credit card.

Ah. I guess I should actually look at the sheet.

I should make a sheet, that would simplify things greatly!

Here it is, just follow the instructions. I've also added it to the OP.

There's also NorCal Regionals this weekend, starting tomorrow, with more of a focus on AE, SFxT and UMvC3. I'm gonna head out on Sunday with some of me droogs to watch the top 8s. B-)

Switching between the SC2 and fighting game streams from MLG, they sure do make SC2 look more exciting than fighting games (which, actually, I think is true, just not by such a wide margin!). But maybe I just don't "read" KoF as well.

Oh, I made the form anonymous, so no worries that anybody will see your gmail name or anything. I just want to get absolute counts of availability, this will make choosing games a lot easier.

I haven't been finding KoF all that interesting myself. I'm hoping to see some MK tonight. Can't seem to get the schedule to come up for the Fighting game stream though. Don't know if they're showing any of that tonight or not.

Earlier they put the schedule on screen and it looked like it was going to be KoF all night. :-/

I ws afraid of that. With the tournament going three days and all three fighting games sharing one stream I wondered if they weren't going to burn through most of one today, the other two tomorrow, and just do the finals of all three on Sunday. It does make sense though.

Ok. I honestly thought there was one for some reason. Hopefully my complete lack of paying attention didn't come off as being a jerk.

I could probably be talked into MK and UMvC3.

And maybe Soul Calibur 5. If anybody sees really good pricing on any of those say so in here or let me know somewhere. If there's a good deal I'll probably just go ahead and pick at least one of them up.

After some warm-up been playing ranked matches only. Slowly working the jitters out. I've won a round here and there, but no matches yet. Got a better feel for my fight stick after changing how I grip (three on top instead of wineglass). Looking forward to learning more tomorrow with you all!

I noticed that SSFIV has a Tournament option. Any opinions on Wednesday being Endless Lobby 'warm-up' and Saturday being a Tourney (maybe 1 hour warmup prematches)? I know not all games have that option, but just pen+pad the brackets.

The tournament mode in Super SF4 will handle the brackets for you, if I recall correctly it just does random assignment. That could be fun, and it probably wouldn't take long. Considering we played for nearly 3 hours on Wednesday, that's more than enough time for a tournament.

Re: Soul Calibur 5 - I'm planning to wait a while before scheduling this game in particular, and there are a number of reasons for that. First, it's brand new and thus full price. Second, it's gotten pretty mixed feedback from series fans in terms of the fighting (Soul Calibur hasn't been a well balanced series since 2, but 4 was notoriously unbalanced and 5 is worse from what I've read). Third, Namco has by far the worst online of any fighting game I've played. Soul Calibur 4 was laggy even on a 100% perfect connection playing with somebody the next town over, anything less than a perfect connection was nearly unplayable, and I haven't heard that Soul Calibur 5 rectified this issue. Of the two brand new fighting games, I would rather go with Street Fighter X Tekken, at least the online is playable, if slow to connect, in that.

*Sigh*

I bought a stick.

I think that means I'm in for at least one more of the games soonish.

I assume you bought the 360 version, and just accidentally linked to the PS3 version?

They are good sticks. The stick and buttons are the same ones I bought for my own stick, and I can attest to their quality. I don't think you will be disappointed.

Yeah, I'm not that dumb.

SC5 and SFxT are available at Red Box. I'm not planning on buying either just renting.

The only red box that's convenient for me is at a grocery store and never has anything available

*Actually, it looks like they've added a second kiosk in the same building and it has SFxT in. So when that comes around maybe I'll be able to play.

*Also, just want to say watching Mortal Kombat is hilarious. So much ridiculous stuff happening constantly.

edit: scratch that

Wait, did I miss today?

Not that I know of. Should still be another three hours before everybody's really on.
