Now I do love Neil DeGrasse Tyson

They're both big meanies:

On a somewhat related note, Montalban, I just watched Space Seed for the first time ever. LOVED Wrath as a kid but never saw Space Seed. I have a new appreciation for your current avatar.

A friend of mine worked with him on a Discovery Channel series, and let's just say after that experience she now hates science. It's a shame, really.

Damn. I met him (very briefly) at a convention thing some time ago and he seemed like a decent sort.

Sad to hear the long-term experience may not live up to the moment-to-moment interaction state.

Please don't let it affect your love of science. Science!

I had some good times with Lt. McGivers. Good times, good times.

I am watching it now and he is just as entertaining in a forum like this as he is in scripted videos.

I laughed so hard the first time I saw that episode. Ahhhhh, good times.

Completely agree. Neil is extraordinary.

I've watched one or two of these Isaac Asimov Memorial Debates before (on the AMNH site), and I agree that Neil is a good emcee. That said, this year's "debate" isn't as quite as interesting to me as the one(s) I've watched before.

The Q&A from the audience is about to begin, so maybe that will be better than what's been discussed thus far.

I will be at work. I trust that this will be archived in some capacity?

+1

Didn't see an archive last night so I just watched the 2011 debate on Youtube. Dr. Tyson does not seem to be a proponent of the string theory.

Tyson was on the Daily Show just last month! Check him and JS hanging out.

Interview on the Point of Inquiry podcast.

Wait...Fox is going to remake Carl Sagan's "Cosmos" with Neil Tyson as the host? I guess this was announced almost a year ago, but I totally missed it. Seth MacFarlane is an executive producer, and its planned to air in either 2013 or 2014. That's pretty awesome, though it seems like a bit of a weird combination.

Have I just been living under a rock for a year, or is this news to everyone else as well? I have to admit, I'm a bit giddy to see how this turns out next year (hopefully).

Under a rock.

Fair enough. Still pretty awesome.

Under a rock.

I'm going with rock as well.

Seth MacFarlane made a big band album. Like NDT, he can do anything.

Today's Scenes From a Multiverse has a familiar looking fellow:

Yeah, what's this about black holes projecting on their surface the information content of the things they've swallowed? I had never heard of that before. Guess I don't keep up with this stuff as well as I thought.

I'm not a twitter guy, but every few weeks I catch up with Dr. Tyson's. One I enjoyed:

@neiltyson
Fond of bow ties & hats. Handbag is bigger on the inside. Talks to variety of creatures. Evidence Mary Poppins is a Time Lord

I remember watching Cosmos as an 8 year old boy with an interest in the stars and having my mind blown by Carl Sagan's words and Vangelis' music.

Thanks for pointing out NGDT, I hope to introduce him to my daughters in a year or two. In the mean time, looks like I have some reading to catch up on too.

This is funny because she didn't recognize him until afterwards

For those that only watch the imbedded video, and are disappointed that it doesn't show her coming to the realization of who she was talking to, here's what she wrote on the youtube page:

When I walk around Times Square looking for interviewees, I purposefully look for interesting people. People with a spark in their eye, people laughing or talking animatedly, people who look deep in thought, people wearing hats -- they are ALWAYS good to talk to -- and people with interesting hair. The latter drew me to this man. I admit it; I did not recognize one of our greatest minds as he strolled through Times Square. I, the girl who just got a telescope and has been reading only deep sci-fi for years and lives for the day our society turns toward the cosmos for its answers instead of our pockets and TVs -- I failed to recognize the incomparable Neil DeGrasse Tyson. That's why I talked to him about politics instead of the other grillion questions I would have asked, had I only known. That might make this interview better in terms of its spontaneous spirit, but it certainly doesn't make me FEEL any better. I blew my chance to know the secrets of the universe, people! Alas, I can only hope you enjoy this interview while I nurse my broken heart. Sigh.

I saw Cameron mentioning this on one of his talk shows last week doing all the press for the re-release. But he didn't mention it was Tyson. That makes the story even better.

I've seen/heard him speak that Stupid Design rant on Youtube. It's so good and so funny.
