Wasteland 2 Catch-All: Director's Cut!

Approaching 800k with 33 days left. Looks like a lock!

I kicked in $15.

My bad, Gremlin! The game that was a development nightmare was Stonekeep, not Dragon Wars.

FMV FTW!

I got that in the Interplay anniversary set years ago, but never got around to playing it.

Care to be more specific? You don't feel that if they get funded they will deliver a game? They won't be able to deliver something very specific?

That at the end of this there won't be a game at all. inXile's track record isn't stellar, I don't doubt that if they deliver a game that it will be a faithful Wasteland experience but that's IF they deliver a game which I have strong doubts that they will.

I would love a Wasteland sequel, I'm just not sure that inXile is the company that can produce it.

That said, I wouldn't mind eating crow over this.

Yeah, that makes more sense. Stonekeep was one of the games that was legendary vaporware, back when Battlecruiser 3000 was the joke instead of Duke Nukem Forever.

Over 900k in two days. Looks like two days is becoming a norm for the legendary developers.

I saw this on a local news sites so I threw in my 15$. Wasteland is a cool game :).

And somewhat more on topic:

I just hope they hit the 1.5 million mark so I get a Mac version, so I don't have to dual-boot/VM.

If you were just $400,000 more about putting your money where your post-mouth was, you wouldn't have to hope. You casual.

Gone ahead and given as much as I can afford. Maybe a little more than I should have, but this is something approaching a dream for me.

You and a lot of other people, apparently.

I kicked in $15, just hoping it ends up on Steam. Approaching 1.3 million now.

I never played Wasteland, but Fargo's been involved in enough great stuff that I'm willing to spot him $35 to see what he can do with it.

However, to the person who mentioned:

Arcanum
Vampire The Masquerade: Bloodlines.

You shouldn't have gone there, because both those games were buggy, unplayable messes when they shipped. Bloodlines was kinda fixed by the developer, but it eventually took fans working for free to get it all the way correct. Arcanum, OTOH, was never really fixed.

He was talking about Jason Anderson who is doing the story for Wasteland 2 (and only the story). As far as I know inXile doesn't employ people from Troika (or Obsidian).

Ah, okay, I misunderstood the thrust of the comment, then. The writing on Bloodlines was outstanding, and I think Arcanum was good, but I never got that far with it, because it kept crashing, or putting me into unplayable situations.

Yeah, Troika did amazing work, it's unfortunate their games were broken. It's no surprise how many Troika people work at Obsidian because that's generally how I feel about Obsidian.

Well, New Vegas was a festering mass of bugs, and was never really fixed, so ... at least those guys are over there, instead of working on Wasteland 2, eh?

I've read the kickstarter and watched the video. I honestly want to understand and am willing to be convinced: Why are people backing this? Is it just because people want a sequel to the original so much? That'd be odd, since a quality game could have any number of names.

Not trolling, honestly want to know. When I heard the lead dude go through go his credentials I was impressed, and it is the one thing that has me considering donating- thus, I'd like to know more from those who are sold on this.

I'd love to see a sequel, and I've got enough buy-in to the world, and the creative team behind it (Brian Fargo, Michael Stackpole, Mark Morgan) that I'm willing to take a flyer on being a patron, for, say a 35% chance I'll get a good game back (that I would have bought anyway, for the WL name), a 10% chance that I'll get a great game back, and a 100% chance that I'll enjoy rooting for regardless.

Brian Fargo has been either behind or involved with many of my all-time favorite games: The Bard's Tale series, Wasteland, Dragon Wars, Battle Chess, Neuromancer, Baldur's Gate, Icewind Dale... the list goes on. It seems like he's struggled to find his voice in the world of modern publishers so I'm hoping this route may help him find a new spark. Certainly sounds like he's been excited about doing a new Wasteland for awhile, so I hope the passion shows in the end result.

As for Wasteland itself, it could have any number of names but Wasteland implies a style of game you rarely see any more: open world, turn-based party-centric RPG. That's what I was raised on and I'll gladly jump at the chance to help see a new one happen.

Why are people backing this?

Dude, this guy did Fallout. Fallout! That was kind of the game that he was forced to make, originally, instead of Wasteland 2. He's asking for funding to go back and make the game he would have made instead.

In computer game terms, this is approximately like da Vinci asking for money to create a painting he originally wanted to do more than the Mona Lisa.... but with space age materials.

Maybe a better analogy would be giving the guys who made Stonehenge some money to make something cool with modern construction techniques.

In an industry so rife with eagerly-anticipated sequels, what exactly makes it odd? Half of the threads on the first page of the Games forums are about sequels.

For me there are two main reasons

- Brian Fargo et al did Fallout and called it that because they no longer had the rights to Wasteland
- He says he wants to do a no holds barred isometric party based RPG

This leads me to think that Wasteland 2, albeit with a different backstory and setting somewhat, would be a spiritual successor at least in gameplay to Fallout 1 & 2.

I miss shooting some dude in the balls and kicking him when he's down in agony

Don't forget reason number 3. It is 15 bucks, it is not like they are asking for $50 minimum, I tossed in $15 just to see what happens, if I get two hours out of the game that is worth the money to me.

Those reasons are the excellent reasons for backing this. I'm a little paranoid that this game will be vaporware and/or run out of money. It they pull it off, it could be amazing. Fallout was.

$15 is a risk I'm willing to take. The more people take the risk the less of a risk it is too, so that's slightly comforting.

I plan to do $15. If I didn't have these misgivings, I would be interested in doing more.

They need to make a game that you can make in two years or less. They need to avoid stupid things like full motion video, expensively animated cutscenes, motion capture, etc. Make the core, isometric game. That's what people are backing.

In my case? I just wanna see another isometric-view RPG. I miss those. It seems to me that game developers in general have forgotten there's a market for those.
