Dust 514 Catch-All

It's in beta now so I thought I'd start a thread here.
I'm also on
http://www.dust514.org/
There's a forum there dedicated to recruitment.

So should there be a GWJ Dust corp separate from the Eve one already established?
Same universe but still different playstyles and audience.

Has the beta started?

I didn't think we had an official GWJ Eve corp; just a chat channel.

Also I lost all interest in this once it became a PS3 exclusive.

There is a GWJ Corp, but it's been long defunct. EVE just doesn't have the numbers to maintain a corp for GWJ, and in all honesty, most MMOs are like this past the initial 3 month rush; see AOC, LOTRO and WAR for big names that did this.

As for Dust, I think you hit it on the head, there. PS3 exclusives get a little traction around here, but mostly the single player games(Uncharted). It seems to me that the majority of console players around here, especially when it comes to multiplayer, are on the 360, which is another big knock against it gaining traction.

I can't argue against them for making it a PS3 Exclusive; apparently Sony gave them free rein to do what they had to, to make it happen. We all know that Microsoft wouldn't do that with their beloved XBL.

I'm of the opinion that it should have been a PC game if they couldn't work something out with MS, or at least left themselves the option to cross-platform PS3/PC via Valve.

True.

While I sort of get the dislike for this being a PS3 exclusive, I don't think Sony could have done much more to sweeten the deal:

Dust 514 to support mouse/keyboard
Dust 514 free to download, free to play

Very cool.. and I think a good move.. but I can't help but think that an MMOG (even an MMOFPS) launched this late in the sales cycle in this console generation is a dubious investment.

I have absolutely no experience with Eve Online, but I get the Playstation Blog updates in my email and noticed that this will be free to play. Will this game make any sense for someone without experience with Eve? I've read a few of the dev diary posts and it seems like a steep learning curve.

Then again, I was originally put off by MAG and ended up loving it so I'm not opposed to giving it a try, especially since it will be a free download.

You're not going to need to know anything about EVE. You could go read the EVE Chronicles on the official website to get an idea for the back story of the universe and the theme of the various factions, but that's all pretty irrelevant to the gameplay.

That's good. I was worried that some of the vehicle or soldier upgrades and abilities would be in the Eve nomenclature, which is like a foreign language to me. That's the way some of the devs were discussing how you could add different upgrades and abilities to your character, but I'm assuming it will be described more quantitatively in the game (+2 fire damage resistance to tracked vehicles equipped with the Neutron Quarelator, for instance).

Amusingly enough, some of the recent changes being made to EVE are to reduce or eliminate some of the esoteric naming policies and name things according to what they actually do using clear language.

That would be nice. I think the devs might be taking for granted all the jargon they're using when describing this game. It sounds like they're targeting Eve players first and foremost with this game (perhaps rightfully so) without giving a second thought to new players who have no context with the Eve universe.

You don't think "Hardwiring - Inherent Implants 'Lancer' G2-Epsilon" was clear?

I have a Dust 514 beta key looking for a good home. I no longer own a PS3, so I hope someone here will put it to good use. If you want it, let me know if you are in North America or Europe/Australia (somehow those two regions are lumped together).

At this point in the console cycle do you think they are planning on this being a cross platform PS3/PS4 title? If not, I do not see much hope for the long term.

I don't think Sony can afford to take a risk on a new console failing the way the PS3 did, so I'd say you're fairly safe for at least the next 2-3 years.

Since when has Sony done the right thing, Anime? I figure you can just think of the *stupidest* thing they could do, and then wait for the press release.

I admit it, I laughed...

Well, true. But right now they're a myriad of failing businesses wrapped around a profitable insurance company. But yes, after all the screwups, they probably will push to market, ignoring Nintendo and MS and what they're doing right, and that'll be the end of the Playstation as we know it.

Oh, I don't think they'll kill the PS. It'll keep rolling along. I just don't think they'll make as much of it as they could.

Well, yea. But it'd certainly put a damper on new stuff for it, which would likely mean no more, or certainly fewer ridiculously long updates.

FYI, I have TWO beta keys for Dust 514 that I JUST got in an email today. First come first served to those that want one of the codes.

You can buy your way into the beta,

I'm making a character now, whoo!

Agreed. ...though the free-to-play/micro-transaction model on a console is territory not treaded often...

Not a guaranteed success I'm sure, but I know too little about the game itself to speculate.

Both my Beta Keys are gone FYI.

A new build is out.

So, I tried to find this on the PSN store this week to download a demo or something, but I can't even find it to buy. The store entry shows videos and microtransaction money packs, but color me stupid because within the Dust 514 entry there was no option to download the actual game client or buy it and add it to my shopping cart.

At the first of the week i think they were still down due to them merging wtih the EVE universe. Folks on the ground can call in planetary strikes and if someone has a ship in EVE correctly equiped they can get to attack.

Still sad this is just for the PS3.
