Per the big man himself:

Yes, Virginia, it's true... there is going to be a GAME OF THRONES MMORPG. And that's in addition to the two previously announced videogames from Cyanide, the real-time strategy game GENESIS and the forthcoming Cyanide RPG.

The upcoming Game of Thrones MMORPG is currently being developed by BigPoint (http://www.bigpoint.com/) in collaboration with HBO. BigPoint is already one of the premier developers of online games, including Battlestar Galactica Online, and Lord of Ultima. Now, in partnership with HBO, and based on their award winning television series, BigPoint is working on a Massively Multiplayer Online version of Game of Thrones.

Preview here

Work on the game began last summer and a closed beta test is planned for the fall of 2012.

Seems very optimistic.

Given his track record, that really means 2014.

Zing

If this a browser based MMO, it really wouldn't take very long to get it up and running and adding features is a feature of a browser based MMO. They move quicker, or at least that's my experience.

Can you get married in this game?

I just remember the various WoW griefing shenanigans (example), and this would be the perfect setup for griefing, better yet it fits the setting.

It looks a lot like skyrim with different factions and a new map.

You know I was just thinking that we needed another Fantasy based MMO. I really wish we had more options for that.

While I mostly agree with your sarcasm, I would still welcome a WOT or Malazan based MMO. While I love me some GRRM, I think his world might be a little to low fantasy with regards to potential class types.

Knight
Beast Master
One armed knight
Exiled knight
Bastard knight
Pirate knight
Vagina sorcerer

LOL, yeah:

those are what I think of when someone uses the words "premier online games".

Normally it's the famous author's descendants that sell out the license and reap large amounts of cash from crappy games, sequels, and spin-offs. Truly Mr. Martin is ahead of his time!

Well, from his blog

"The moment I signed my deal with HBO, all subsidiary and merchandising rights not already under license passed to them."

EDIT - Just whimsically killing time today...

Welcome to A Game of Thrones.. The text based MMO... Shall you make a character?

*Clicks Yes*

What is your name?

*Darth Yoda Starks Suck*

What noble house dost thou join?

*Lannister*

Darth Yoda Starks Suck enters the grand hall of...
You have been murdered by the vile and dastardly Snoogans Blartwaters of Frey. He who has watched your rise in power with a sneer on his lips and a carefully hidden dagger. The deadly poison of his foul blade burns through your body, and you scream in pain as your lovely betrothed watches from the balcony above... a playful smile on her alabaster skinned face as her step-brother, whom you learned from the Oracle, was really her half-brother, slaps her behind. You have perished.

You have been murdered by Frodo Dkmv...

Bigpoint need to step up their game because Battlestar Galactica isnt that impressive.

Did any of you play the Game of Thrones Strategy game that was for sale on Steam? It bombed big time. It was apparently made by a low budget developer and was riddled with imbalances and bugs. I waited 30 days for a review before buying and by the end of the month it was 99% complaints on their Steam forums.

Yeah, there's not a lot of love for Cyanide. They're doing the RPG that's coming out this year and, well, I fully expect it to be utter crap.

While my heart hopes for the best, my head regrets to inform me that this will be a terrible disaster. We should take bets on which fantasy MMO death spiral this will most resemble.

And should we bury it next to the others?
