This is exactly what I was going to say.

I think there is still a stigma to producing F2P game, and that they wouldn't get the player base they need to support a F2P game without charging people for at least a year.

Plus there's the need get back production costs. I doubt any aaa mmo will be f2p due to that and i dont want them stop making them. So personally i dont want to see f2p happen.

Ive yet to see a mmo (aaa) be developed as f2p that was actually worth a damn in the long run. (lotro, ddo were developed as f2p)

Thats a bizzare logic path... possibly correct though. I don't disagree that the stigma exists after all why are so many former subscription games going F2P. From my count there are far fewer subscription games vs F2P games.

I would be willing to bet that Rift goes F2P by the end of the year which will mark the end of that games subscription run.

I have no hard date to back up what is more successful F2P at launch vs. F2P after X amount of years.. but my feeling is that Blizzard's next MMORPG will be either 100% F2P or a hybrid model right at launch.

Plus there's the need get back production costs. I doubt any aaa mmo will be f2p due to that and i dont want them stop making them. So personally i dont want to see f2p happen.

F2P doesnt preclude charging for the box. at $60 a box you can recoup production costs fairly easily.

I agree that it is a bit weird but I can recall people on this board saying they wouldnt play a F2P game.

And we should all be clear.. that evidence is mounting that F2P is a very viable business model..which is why the bizzare logic path that you HAVE to launch as a subscription game to have success as a F2P down the road.

F2P from launch has generated a ton more revenue than subscription games combined minus Blizzard.. and even then the largest F2P companies are producing revenue on par with Blizzard in China

It sounds too much like Socialism!

Wouldn't the F in F2P preclude that? Guild Wars isn't a F2P MMO, but it's not a subscription based one either.

I figured it was obvious.. but if we are being literal.. then I get it. So I will alter.. I can't believe this game is subscription based and not a hybrid box fee/F2P game.

You can't really hybridize them. A game can't be free to play if there's an upfront box fee. Box fee/RMT would be a better phrase.

Sigh

What now? Lotro was developed as F2P? Because they had sub only (no in-store market) for several years. I also think it's one of the best F2P games in comparison to Perfect World and similar companies.

The reason I like Subs is because they tend to weed out some F2P community which is often filled with immature. Although P2P gets their share as well.

sorry mistyped they were NOT developed as f2p

Just got done looking at a presentation from a fairly well known Publisher... why exactly do we believe that F2P isnt viable for a AAA MMO to be profitable and recoup investment?

The amount of people willing to pay FAR more than $15 a month is no longer shocking to me.. but to see it in an excel sheet is eye opening.

As long as it wasn't some sort of hybrid free to play/pay to play. I hear those are an abomination.

LOTRO is doing alright with this, although it angers some of the community. You can subscribe and get all content unlocked, or you can purchase unlocks as you need/want them.

But in Japan MMO prices are like closer to $30 a month for subscriptions if I can recall correctly. I am happy with $15, but I would skip mmos entirely if the price were that high and it did not include the cost of the retail box. That would make the first two months ~$90.

I'd still pay more... i may have to reduce the number of active subs, but for a game i enjoy i'd be able to pay a lot more.

I'd pay more then the standard 14.99/mo but they better be giving me something worth that money,

Hell I am not sure I am getting my moneys worth on a lot of games right now that are at the standard fee.

League of Legends seems to have found a good way to do FTP.

and doesnt apply at all to a MMO

I'm not sure why exactly but I prefer to pay 15 bucks a month to know what I'm getting. I dislike all these microtransactions that seem to clutter the game up. I would rather pay a set amount of money for a complete, dependable experience.

I don't want to worry about two parallel economies when I'm playing a game. To be honest the whole "LOTRO BUX" kind of sapped a bit of the fun out of the game for me. I'm not sure why, because it's not like the gameplay changed.

My wife and I are really looking forward to this title. She'll just be finished with her dissertation and our pre-orders of this game is one of the rewards she has set for herself for finishing.

BY THE WAY HONEY IF YOU ARE READING THIS YOU ARE SO BUSTED AND BETTER GET BACK TO WRITING!

I'm hoping this game will tide us over until World of Darkness Online is released by CCP....whenever.

Doh!

Light on info but it does detail some bits about crafting here:

http://massively.joystiq.com/2012/03...

Ugh! Man, all these games are coming out at once. D3 may. Secret World June. GW2 July.

And then there are the outliers like TERA (may 1st) and Torchlight 2 which may surprise us with a sudden and quick release date due to D3's announcement.

Ya except i'm completely ignoring TERA and TL2. Neither one appeals to me. I'm still fairly hooked into SWTOR though. Big content patch in Apr for that.

Tattoo diaper man is a bit freaky.
But exposition make-out girl is freakier.

I want this game so badly.

The casting animations aren't that great. They'll do I guess.

Ya i dont understand this... AoC looks better and they said the graphic improvements came from TSW.

Those have looked weak in every clip they have shown. I don't know what is up with that, either.

I hope they have some sort of bare hand elemental fighting like Firebenders from Avatar or The Immortal Iron Fist.
