SSX (2012) Catch-All

Yeah, it's funny. I was working my way to the top of the leaderboard and making decent progress, learning the slope and overall game mechanics through repeated runs.

Then I saw rickyyo's times and settled for, "Well, there's always #2.".

If there's anyone I don't have on my friends list, add me. I culled a few people yesterday ( ) to make some room. I generally try to stay at 99 so that I can still get requests.

I added several and had to do sOme cleanup as well. I'll do another cleanup after SSX is out and I can see who is actually playing.

The game isn't even OUT here yet!

It's not out anywhere yet.

I am getting closer to that crazy 2:09 of rickyyo. The demo is nice in that we all have the same character and equipment. I wonder how this is going to be handled in the full game?

With Forza, I also prefer the set races where everyone uses the same car and same setup. It worries me a bit about SSX. I would rather worry about my speed skills and ideal route, not the ideal outfit and board.

They're playing the demo.

Spent some more time with the demo tonight, and I'm totally in. I was a bit hesitant after an initial play through of the demo. I had some of the same worries about too much speed and ease of landing.

But as I tried to beat scores and times of the few guys on my friend's list playing tonight, I just really grew to love the controls, and the complexity and a strategy came into focus.

The fact is, as much as I loved SSX Tricky, whatI really wanted was that game, but with friends to race against. The online features in this kind of blow that away. Great use of ghosts, leaderboards, and in-game messaging to alert you of scores and times to beat really makes the experience immersive.

I like the I can go to Rider.net, and a rundown of not only folks on my friends list and and their accomplishments, but also the ability to add their friends who have played the game to my friends list. I hesitated to just start adding friends, as these are clearly people playing the demo, and they may not pick up the game.

Although, this is probably the game that is going to eliminate the vita from being purchase any time soon. With MLB 2K12, TW 13, The Witcher 2 all coming up, I can't justify the $$$ to add the Vita to the list.

Interestingly, all of these games might have been pretty cool on the Vita, and none of them are. SSX would be a seriously good Vita game.

Absolutely. 2-3 minute races, easy.

Are you on my friends list? I don't remember seeing you there.

I've thought about this too. I too only stuck with Forza 4's set condition races that leveled the playing field.

Going over video previews for SSX, it seems like anyone can create and invite others into a custom challenge. Seems like there's a ton of toggles that could make everyone compete with the same level characters and gear. You can also limit the challenge to Friends List only and finally set how long it stays active.

Approaching it from this perspective, it wouldn't be difficult to have a weekly or weekend challenge where a race/trick event is posted with a set time period for everyone to try out. Then we could just update it the next week with a new set of challenges.

There's an overview of what I'm talking about in this video.

That does sound like an awesome idea.

PSN is Miashara1 btw.

Flares partially refill your boost meter. This game is growing on me. I'm at 2:06.23 and I think there's another shortcut which will take a few seconds off. I'm sure its possible to hit sub 2:00 on the demo.

Looking on youtube I saw a time of 1:46. A couple of the shortcuts look like your running into a wall but are actually caves. Seems like the trick is to only take jumps to fill your boost up and avoid rails as much as possible.

Felt pretty good about my 2.8 million run yesterday, until I realized someone on my friends list has already broken 5 mill. I've gotta admit the way they have implemented leader boards and ghosts is only going to make my addiction worse.

The OP should be up-to-date with all names posted so far. Please double-check yours for spelling/syntax.

I sent out friend requests for the people I didn't have. It's getting harder to cull my friends list. I used to do it by finding people who hadn't been on in weeks but now I'm down to nothing but "So-and-so was last on 12 minutes ago" Some of yous are slackers though and might have to give up your new privilege of being my friend. Really, Tanglebones? 155 Gamerscore and 3 stars? I CULLED FOR YOU, MAN!

[Edit] Apologies if any of you got spammed with friend requests from me. I was using the web site and wasn't getting good feedback at times. It may be that the person I was adding is full as well and I thought I was having browser issues as it wasn't updating the request status.

Pretty anxious to pick this up tomorrow.

I watched the videos I posted on page two again, and it is really interesting to see just how much more game there will be than what we see in the demo. Having played the demo, it really made me appreciate those videos detailing all of the different environment and challenges.

The more I played the demo last night, the more I am sure that the devs have really knocked this one out of the park.

Heh, I actively avoid GFWL, and the 360 is my wife's Dance Central machine

I'll be getting this on 360 tomorrow if anyone wants to friend me.

So THAT's who rikyyo is.

Sorry I was so late accepting Friend requests - the hardware problem that's keeping me from playing the Mass Effect 3 demo is kicking my arse here as well. Hopefully that will be solved tonight.

I had to check this but my username is GWJ_Duoae. Sorry!

Add my name to the 360 list. Should be the same as my forum name.

My rental service came though and I've got a copy on the way (for 360). I'm actually a little surprised with how excited I am for it. I absolutely loved SSX 3 back in the day, and hopefully this one rekindles those memories.

I'll be picking this up tomorrow as well, but probably won't get around to playing any until Wed. It's been a while since I've done any serious cleanup on the ol' friends list, but this should be worth it.

edit: That would be for the 360, XBL tag is the same as my forum name.

Lowercase 'm' please.

I just got my notice from Gamefly that this shipped so feel free to drop me a friend request. I have tons to spare!

Can't wait! This looks like a hoot!

I dumped an absured amount of time into the mass effect 3 demo... I feel so ashamed. Let me tell you guys about something else I feel ashamed in.... I replicated DJ's time after seeing his run. I knew that the mining shaft existed I just never thought it would be worth my time. So, my new time will piss of the whole lot of you playing the demo.

Also, DJ if you read this... I tied your time 2:06.68 the first time.... The leaderboard took the newest record and placed in it front. In case you guys wanted to know how it worked. So matching times and scores are dealt with on the newest achieved first. And I apologize in advance for not seeing that.

I did UPS express from bestbuy.com it says no later than 10:30 am on release day. So I'll probably play a bit before going to class if UPS isn't lying.

Yes rails are a no no in ssx if you learned anything from the first 3 games. They are nice if you need to keep the tricky boost going. But, get off them as soon as you get the benefit of a score. The only rails that are beneficial in the JT2 race are, the one that goes down on that first drop and the train track that leads to that mine shaft on the far right of the track before the end. Also that tip I mentiond early of jumping over kickers and lips. It keeps the momentum going because your riding down a steep cliff.

A couple of questions:

1. How are you keeping your boost full?

2. When you say jump a kicker, you mean to completely leap over it onto the slope immediately behind it?

^^^ There has to be some hidden Achievement for getting the exact same time, down to the hundreth of a second, as another player. That's crazy.

Congrats, man.

Though I do think the leader should remain so until their time is beaten!

( )

On a related note, I'm really loving the trails other riders leave behind. The blue trail is a replay of the rival directly ahead of you on the leaderboards. The gold is a pre-programmed run of the A.I. who the devs. earned a minimum Gold time/score with. Not sure about the rest (live players? replays of people on your Friends List?). Either way, it's a great learning tool and as mentioned above immersive as heck when you consider you're seeing runs from your buds.

MisterStatic, for the first question, you have to keep tricking after you have Tricky or Super Tricky activated to keep it going. If you look at the word Tricky at the bottom of the screen, you'll see a set of 3 arrows on either side of it that serve as a visual countdown to losing Tricky status. Bigger tricks slow the countdown, but conversely, a quick jump/spin on flat terrain can be enough to keep the meter charged until you hit a jump.

Yeah, for the most part I am tracking that. I just don't know how rickyyo is doing it while avoiding kickers and rails. Just quick tricks off small jumps?
