Pixar and Dreamworks films discussions

Honestly, I don't blame Pixar for this. I blame Disney and their sequelitis/cashgrabbing ways. I feel like Disney was the only real reason we got any sequels out of Pixar at all.

Marketing Daily[/url]]Creutz wrote in a June 23 note that the original film has driven almost $10 billion in global merchandise sales, though most of it is through licensing, of which Disney collects up to 15%. Disney expects sales of "Cars 2" toys and products to top the $2.8 billion from "Toy Story 3" last year.

Man, Bravelooks like it might be kinda scary for younger kids

Next summer, Sparhawk -- about a year away.

Normally I like Pixar's work. They're a talented group of dudes and while everything they make looks appropriate for children, most of it is depressing or horrifying. I can respect that.

But man, Cars 2. Let me tell you about Cars 2.

That film looks stupid. Genuinely stupid. Criminally and objectively stupid, not just to an adult regarding a piece of children's entertainment but as a human being with any sense of humanity or compassion.

It's also the most heavily marketed thing I've ever seen. I see more ads for Cars 2 than for Coca Cola. I was walking through Wal Mart the other day and counted no fewer than 10 displays. I walked along a row of aisles and each and every one had a large Cars 2 display in the same exact spot. At one point I had to walk around ANOTHER Cars 2 display on the other side, because they worried someone might look RIGHT instead of continue to stare LEFT.

It also seems to be based around a single conceit: the most refined and talented Europeans still can't compete with a sloppy idiot American stereotype who is completely oblivious to the world around him (and possibly have to work their asses off to protect him from his own poor choices).

Of course I could be wrong about that, having not seen it. Maybe the Americans lose in the end. I haven't heard any outrage over it so I'm guessing they don't.

Actually, it's all this and worse. While having some entertaining moments (ooh! shiny!), the central message seems to be yourself, even if you're a bad person. A person who never considers the viewpoint of others, or even understand the effects of their actions. The movie seems to say "That's OK....everyone else must accept you for who you are (despite how much you've screwed them from your idiotic actions)". I could rage on and on, but suffice to say it's just a BAD message. Let's not even start about the target demographic.

Definitely the worst Pixar movie, by far.

Hey y'all, hope ya don't mind me chiming in, but this was the first thread I found talking about How to Train Your Dragon. I just saw it for the first time a couple of days ago, and it's now become my favorite movie. For serious, it just hit EVERY right note, especially as a cat owner.

I'm mad my wife and I didn't watch it before we got our cats. I think our girl would be named toothless or night fury.

Hahaha, aaawwww!

Is anyone else excited for The Lorax? I know it's not a Pixar or Dreamworks film, but it's another company that I love and follow their work.

Yeah. One of my favorites, too. Here's to hoping Dreamworks does more work of this caliber so they can have their own thread.

This trailer makes me excited for The Lorax. However, I've learned not to see a movie based off of a song in the trailer. Titan AE was a hard lesson.

Look at her, all gray and cute:

If that's not Night Fury I don't know what is.

Plus, if you hear her meow... wow, dragon's roar kinda stuff.

My wife loves the Lorax but she's leery of Danny Devito doing the voice. But then she can't stand It's Always Sunny and that may be affecting her perception.

AAWWWWW, that'd be a PERFECT name for her.

Yeah, the Lorax looks great. A really good trailer. Hope it ends up being a good movie. More good animation studios = awesome.

Time to replace her.

I actually agree with this. That's a pretty egregious crime right there...

I guess it would be a Prequel wouldn't it since it seems to deal with how Mike and Sully met at college?

Monsters, Inc prequel:

Yeah, it's a prequel. Fixed.

My daughter has been watching Cars 2 lately and every time I catch parts of it I can't help but feel that it's structured well but has no heart. That trailer gives me the same vibe — it feels like it's going to be disposable and without the usual Pixar magic. I hope I'm wrong.

I have higher hopes for new Monsters Inc over a new Cars because, well, I hated Cars and loved Monsters Inc. But if this does end up being a cash-in so they can fund their next original movie after Brave, then that'll be...alright.

Pixar gave me Wall-E, UP! and Toy Story123. If they never made a movie I loved again I would already have more than I needed.

Excited for Brave though!

Wow. My 2nd favorite Pixar movie (Incredibles #1) gets another two hours!

Yeah Cars 2 was clearly a merchandise cash-in. I haven't seen it actually, but the first Cars is down near or at the bottom of my Pixar list anyway, so I was in no rush. Critic reviews were awful, which is unheard of for Pixar.

Quick check of RT shows that Cars was the only Pixar movie below 94%, down at lowly 74%. And Cars 2 was of course the only rotten one at 38%.

I give you, Live Action Toy Story:

Pixar just announced their film for 2015 will be theater released on June 19th. It's from Pete Docter, called Inside Out. Pete Docter was a director for Monsters Inc and UP, and a writer for Toy Story, Toy Story 2, Monster's Inc, Wall-E, UP, and Monster's University.

Edit to correct misspelled name.

Sounds like a kid's version of Herman's Head. It was a sitcom in the early '90s about a guy named Herman, and it would flash to thoughts in his head, with characters portraying 4 aspects of his psyche.

It'll be interesting to see how it's done.

Totally on board for this. Judging from Pete Docter's previous movies I'm thinking I'd better bring tissues.

Forgot we had this thread. Has everyone seen the Monsters University commercials? Some great spots that aired during sporting events recently, that were just like the commercials that the schools playing in those events usually air. Pretty hilarious spoofs.

Also saw fraternity and sorority pictures for some of the characters posted on facebook the other day. See if I can dig them up to post here...

Here's some images and information about the cast and the monsters they'll be playing, Monsters University Cast.
