Broken Age Catch-All

Backed! $15 is well worth a game!

I have a theory for the sharp dropoff in backers: a lot of people are like me. If they hadn't met their goal yet then I'd kick in $15-30. They have met their goal though, which means the game is definitely going to happen, which means I can wait until the actual release and give Double Fine my money then. Also, hopefully by then I'll have a job.

Also, hopefully by then I'll have a job.

Well, if you're not working, you shouldn't spend anything on it, but every dollar that gets contributed is a dollar that makes the game better, at least up to a certain point.

If you buy now, in other words, you'll get a slightly better game than if you buy later.

Donated my 15 bucks. I hope they can make it a touch less frustrating than Monkey Island, but if not, it'll still be worth it.

50k more and they will have the two million mark.

Less than $7500 away. Wow.

And they're now over $2 million.

For some reason, the ability to be in the credits on this appeals to me.

There are already 4100+ backers pledging $100 or more -- how are they possibly going to fit everyone's name into the credits?

Edit: 5100+, including the higher tiers.

Maybe you just stumbled on the synopsis for the game.

So the game's story is meta? I'd find that fun.

Also, I love Tim. I think he would be hilarious to talk to just about normal everyday things. Like plumbing. And curtains.

Yeah, they're going to be the length of an average Ubisoft game at this point.

I don't know, but I'm almost certain there will now be an achievement for sitting through the credits.

If so, I hope they put each name on screen individually, for 1 second each -- almost 1.5 hours of just backer credits.

I hope they then also get their composer to put together a seamless 1.5 hour musical remix of their various themes and free reign to experiment within that space for the duration of the credits.

So, I have to modify my earlier comment:

There aren't many people in the gaming industry who can say, "Hey, I wanna make a game. Adventure game. Dunno what it's about. Dunno when it'll be done. Wanna help fund it?" and get TWO million dollars shoved in his face.

They may need 1/2 a million just for the credits.

5100 names and counting - with full voice acting in English, French, Italian, German, and Swedish Spanish!

In case, for some reason, you'd like to listen to people talk about the Double Fine Kickstarter vs just read people's thoughts in the thread, the most recent episode of the podcast I record talks about this. I'm sure there's other ways to get to it but (as my tag states) I know nothing- you can look under iTunes for The Principled Uncertainty Podcast.

It's worth noting that they added 3 more slots of the $10,000 tier -- and one of them has already been claimed:

Pledge $10,000 or more
2 Backers • Limited Reward (2 of 4 remaining)

Lunch with Tim Schafer and Ron Gilbert, a tour of the Double Fine offices, and all previous reward tiers. THERE ARE MORE REWARDS but we can't post them here because they're too big! For premium rewards past a $10,000 pledge, see www.doublefine.com
Estimated Delivery: Jul 2012

Took me long enough, but in for $100.

And another update. A full 35 minute youtube movie, talk, between Tim and Ron Gilbert.

Ahoy, Backers of Adventure! And potential Backers of Adventure! And Haters of Adventure who come here whenever they feel like gnashing their teeth and seething with rage!

To the first group, we’d like to say THANK YOU again for the incredible support you've given this project. You’ve changed the way we are thinking about it, and you’ve changed the way EVERYBODY is thinking about a lot of things.

To say thanks to the first group, to entice the second group to join the first group, and to confound and annoy the third group, we are now offering these NEW REWARDS!

The Digital Soundtrack of the Documentary ($30 reward tier) Listen to the awesome game soundtrack at the same time as the awesome documentary soundtrack! I don’t know if that makes sense, or if it’s even medically advisable, but at least this way you have the option!

Special edition box containing both the game disc and a DVD/Blu-Ray of the documentary ($100 reward tier) Perhaps you’re not hip to this digital download craze. Or maybe you just like really nice boxes to put on your mantel so that your guests might linger and admire them while you pour another scotch. Either way, this is gonna be suuuper rad.

The Double Fine Adventure Book ($60 reward tier for a digital PDF, $500 reward tier for a physical copy) WTF? ART? In your MFing HANDS? Whoa Nellie, this is an exciting new development! Filled with concept art, developer bios, excerpts from the game’s script, and deep dark secrets, this book will further expand on this entire adventure. It will be made available both as a super nice, mantel-ready hardcover book in the $500 reward tier, and as a digital PDF in the $60 reward tier for people who just want to read it on the crapper with their iPads. (By the way, never ask to borrow my iPad.)

SO MANY NEW REWARDS!!!! To memorialize this momentous occasion, we’ve got a special treat for you. About a month before we launched the Kickstarter we filmed a 35 minute conversation in which Tim and Ron discussed what adventure games are, what it is like to make them, and what different forms they’ve taken over the years. It’s like watching Bill Moyers talking to Joseph Campbell, but if those guys were cool. We’ve embedded a 5 minute clip of that conversation below, but you can see the full version here.

This project has really grown into something much larger than we were expecting, which is-scientifically speaking-awesome. Many of you have been asking if this means we’ll be taking a bit more time with the production, and the answer is yes. This is not a cute, quick little game anymore. This is the real deal. This is a capital-G Game. This means that some rewards might show up a bit later than originally intended but fear not, it’s all to make sure we provide you with something that is worthy of the love bomb you detonated over Double Fine. Kaaaaa-blooooxoxoxxoxoxoxoxoxo!

That’s the sound a love bomb makes.

THANKS AGAIN AND WE’LL BE TALKING MORE SOON!!!

I think I'm disappointed by this.

Well they're kind of screwed either way. Expand the scope of the game to account for all the extra money, and people will complain when the game takes longer to come out than they originally promised; make the game the way they initially described it and people will complain that Double Fine made a $400k game and pocketed the rest of the money. Personally, I'd rather see them put those funds to use and make the best game they can.

Yeah I agree with that, I'm more disappointed that it happened, not disappointed in Double Fine.

I'd still prefer the money went to multiple games. I think video game budgets often have massively diminishing returns.

Hmm. If you look at the comparably budgeted games, this isn't going to be a blockbuster. They've got about the budget of Costume Quest or Stacking.

I was on the kickstarter site reading the comments for a while, didn't notice but I think I was there maybe an hour...it went up about 5000 dollars. BUT, the number of backers didn't go that much higher. Seems lots of people are changing their pledges to higher amounts, which is good, but I agree with someone that said in the thread long ago, don't remember, that the number of backers was also important. Regardless, we still get a great game, and a message is sent. BUT, the strength of that message I believe depends a lot on the amount of backers, doesn't it? Still haven't crossed the 100,000 backers, which seems like a small amount.

Assuming they peak out around $2.5 million, which is probably too optimistic, that's still not going to fund anything AAA. It's not gonna be Brutal Legend II, but they should have the budget to make something that measures up to Day of the Tentacle or Full Throttle. That kind of game usually took, what, 18 months from Day 1 to shipping?

Yeah 2.5M will make a very detailed and in depth adventure game. Much more so than $400K. Gives the artist plenty of time to build a decent amount of locations and characters..not to mention you get full voice overs now

Well they claimed, or so I read, that the budgets were:

Full Throttle 1.5M
Grim Fandango: 3M

...back when they were made, so with 2.5 which I'm sure they'll cover by fund's end, and with 2D graphics, I'm sure they can come up with something along the lines of a Grim Fandango. Which makes me happy because Grim Fandango is on my top 3 games of all time.

I was reading the comments on the kickstarter page, and some people had a good idea, don't know if it'll happen or what restrictions there are, but they were asking to use the extra money to re-release DOTT, Throttle and Fandango on Steam. All 3 licenses are owned by LucasArts, right? How much would one cost? Its gotta be pretty steap I think, but maybe feasible? I dunno...wish I could play them on steam again, or for the first time in Full Throttle's case...
