Is that a screenshot of AC3 or Mirror's Edge 2? O-o

I second the question!

I'm not sure if that's an actual gameplay screen, but it should be, it looks incredible. I just started Brotherhood so hopefully I can get through that and Revelations prior to release (or as soon as it drops to $40).

The image is a edit of the original Mirror's Edge concept art or something like it.

That said, AC3 with ME art-style... might be something cool.

Now the real question is... are they going to release on October 30th for PC as well, or claim that they are, then mysteriously push it back a month or 2 for some "polishing"?

Personally there are only 2 games I'm definitely buying this year. This is the other one.

If it were ever possible, I'd love for AC3 to have the verticality of that shot. I'm reminded of my love for Spiderman 2 and Prototype.

That screenshot makes me wonder if AC3 will be set in the present day/near future rather than the past.

Regardless it gives me a reason to bump Brotherhood and Revelations up the Pile of Shame list.

I dunno, I just googled AC3 and grabbed an image that seemed the most appropriate. It was either that or a sexy oogaba assassin.

EDIT: on closer look it's pretty obvious that it's Desmond shopped into the Mirror's Edge universe. The color scheme gives it away.

C'mon feudal Japan or 1800's London! It's kind of weird that we haven't seen any media. Perhaps Nintendo wants to show it at E3 for WiiU?

I'm really interested to hear where the 3rd game will be set. So many options really, assassins seem to be a pretty ubiquitous bunch.

Edit:

The stark whites of Mirror's Edge seem to match up with Abstergo aesthetics though, and presumably the cities Abstergo resides in will be similar. So if we do end up traipsing around 20-minutes-into-the-future cities as Desmond, I suspect it wouldn't look too far different from that.

I still think it should be set in the French Revolution. Awesome architecture, labyrinthine and ancient city in Paris, crazy dress, and one of the most world-shaking and history-changing events in human civilization, ripe for some Illuminati-level conspiratorial injection. And why not let a French-owned company plumb that?

But I won't be surprised of rumours of the American Revolution prove true. Gotta sell to the biggest crowd I guess.

American Revolution this time around, and then French with the same character for the inevitable 2013 game?

I was pretty disappointed in Revelations too. The core gameplay toolset has grown too crowded. I felt like I was hardly making use of some of the most fun parts - things like using agents, and social stealth, and the ledge kills that were added in AC2 - unless the mission was specifically designed for them because the newer methods like bombs and assassins were more expedient. Plus the Altair sections were a letdown, and the story just felt like it was treading water and filling time. So hopefully they find a way to pick things back up in 3, but I have my doubts. Certainly, unless the reviews are phenomenal, I'm not going to be in a rush to acquire this one, though I'm sure I'll rent it eventually.

I'd be cool with French or American Revolutions, or Victorian London, or the English Civil War, though that's pretty close to the Renaissance, or, say, Europe 1913, or the Gilded Age, or even All 2012. And I think it's a shame that as far as I know, the Hapsburgs haven't been touched. Feudal Japan would make me yawn so hard my bones rattle.

But I'm super, super wary after AC:R, which let me down, big time. It's going to take some seriously strong reviews and word of mouth to get me back in the Buying Right Away mood.

Ezio was the most interesting protagonist of the series. I'm honestly more interested to see if they can create a new interesting character for whatever setting is used.

It's a bit quick, unless they've been working on this for months without us knowing (what are the chances of that!?)

The screenshot has the Mirror's Edge's colour coding of usable wall edges, etc by the look of it.

The phrase 'interactive entertainment/storytelling' sends shivers down my spine. On the upside, Ubisoft are pretty damn good at coming up with new mechanics that work and preserve the game in their games.

I guess they can write the plot any way they want, but the previous time periods all had a reason to go there, AC1 for an apple location, AC2/Bro for training. The main conflict is in the present, so any animus action needs to have an impact on the present, and assuming AC3 is the end of the story it has to be a near immediate impact.

It the animus central to AC, or could they do a fully present day one?

Here's the original:

Edit: Yes, it was definitely a Mirror's Edge screenshot originally. They're just playing with our hearts with the Mirror's edge angle, especially since I suspect that if the game takes place in the future, the color palette will be white, not blue.

I think it's fair to say they can (and probably will) stretch the story to fit any protagonist they like. One reason I figured Japan was out was it'd be unlikely one of Desmond's ancestors would be a Japanese assassin, but upon further reflection, there's no reason one of his ancestors couldn't have visited there. Or he could just straight up have a Japanese forebear, he doesn't really look like he has that heritage, but a few generations down the track it might be hard to tell.

Something I like about AC is that I don't think they've ever stated much of the present day locations involved (besides AC:B?). It could be in any country, and that probably makes more sense than fixing it to one given the global nature of Abstergo.

The incoming catastrophy in 2012 is their overall story, so a big part of it will have to be present day.

AC is all about the history and the architecture, so revolutionary America wouldn't seem to fit, unless they add a big gameplay mechanic with trees. Victorian London has the architecture, but may not be pretty enough with all the pea soupers and so forth. Excellent for an assassin-type plot though. I also really like the revolutionary France idea from a look and feel point of view, though I'm not sure why the assassins and templars would be there. London was the most important city in the world back then, so if they decide to make it more of a cloak and dagger steampunky type feel then that would tick a lot of boxes.

My big problem with AC fully in the present day is that it makes it too much like a lot of other games, so I think the period thing is fundamental to AC.

I believe one of the articles I posted in the OP mentions that they've been working on it for ~3 years now.

I guess that's ok then

I'm totally in. I love this series and apparently this instalment's been in development for 3 years alongside Brotherhood and Revelations so it won't have the rushed feel Revelations did. I hope not anyway.

I still hold out hope they'll set at least PART of it in 1800's New York City. COME ON, GUYS. Tesla, Twain and Edison!

Even better: Chicago in the 1890's. Not as vertical as New York, but still an incredibly fascinating time.

Is this actually AC3, or is it going to be AC2:4?

I'm a little concerned that if the new setting is too modern, and firearms overtake bladed weapons, it will lose some of the flavor of the series. To me, AC is all about fighting with blades (and the occasional smoke bomb), and I'm trying to imagine how plausible that will be in an 18th- or 19th-century setting. Not that swords and daggers are impossible in those eras, but firearms would be a lot more prevalent.

Wait. There are other ways to kill guards than the crossbow? Huh.

I'm all about the face-stabbing.

Are we still talking about the game?
