DC: Universe - Catch All

Having played Champions Online for a while (a good, underrated, but not great game), Co made a big mistake by locking up powers.

Why do you think locking up powers is a mistake?

Glad you enjoyed it. No other game has ever made me outright angry the way CO did. I paid full price for a game that had essentially no manual, no obvious internal logic to it; it was only on the forums here at GWJ that I learned anything about how to actually construct a character. CO seemed to assume I was full aware of their pen-and-paper rules before I bought their game. And although people have criticized DCUO online for its limited number of cities, I thought CO had far too little content to dare charge a monthly fee.

But there you go: you, and obviously many others liked it, so they must have satisfied some customers.

I think "satisfied" is the word I'd use, both positive and negative. It was..ok. Everytime I reinstalled and played CO, it was like chewing gum way longer than necessary. Those first 5 seconds are just happysugarzenblissjoymouthsex, followed by repetitive flavorless chemical chewing, and then no way to discard it effectively and walk away.

Regarding locking out the powers, I love their choice to go F2P, and the game is ok in short bursts of say 10-20 minutes every week or so, since it's not a particularly large hard driive hog. But I think if you are going to do that then you need to offer complete freedom to design the character I like and then lock out content, instead of limiting my choices. As it currently stands, CO is about freedom to design the hero you want, and I think it does a better job of that than DCUO regarding body types and costume design, but then the game shoots itself in the foot by limiting what powers you can select. I also agree that the content for CO is lacking and lackluster - DCUO does a far, far better job of it.

Ironically, if you had actually played any Champions tabletop, you would be no better prepared. The only similarity between the MMO and the RPG is that some of the stats are called the same thing. Other than that there is nothing congruent between them.

Well, I bought the lifetime sub back when DCUO was released, but never really got into it due to conflicts with WoW. Now that I've finally quit my WoW addiction, I've reinstalled DCUO. I'll be looking for a league invite whenever I see someone online. Reading back the last few pages, it looks like the characters that can invite are:

Stele
Wild Orchid
Blackened Night
Kabar
Serra Angel
Quantum Fissure

Anyone I missed?

Hemidahl is available to fight some crime.

Need to get back into this. But actually being Batman in Arkham City has been a little more fun lately.

Once I 100% that I'm sure I'll need a hero fix and be back.

I'm playing this on PS3. Any any of you playing on PS3? I'm looking for some people to group up with from time to time.

TheAngryHeretic on PS3.

I really WANT to like this game, but there's so many annoying bugs that are STILL there since release.. and not uncommon ones either. There's whole powers with no sound effects, voiceovers that are missing for some NPCs (Um, pretty vital guys!) and graphical glitches that are very common. Just this week I fell through the world zoning into an instance. Lovely.

But besides all that, it's fun!

Hey. Hey. Hey. But those collections are badass, aren't they?

Curious about the platform you're playing on.

PC, and I've seen the same voice/sound/graphical issues on at least 4 different systems with both ATI and Nvidia cards.

I asked simply because I'm curious if this sort of stuff is happening on the PS3, which I've always felt is the lead platform.

Zenke might disagree, as he's (was much) closer to the development side, but I wonder if the game is getting the PC support that a "standard" (ie. PC only) MMO gets.

Keep in mind I can't talk for the dev team down there *at all* at this point, because it's now been months since I worked at SOE.

But: The PS3 and PC side, when I was there, was essentially the same 'thing'. The developers have no real way of working on one without working t'other. There was talk of splitting the codebase at some point because of the challenges involved in doing PS3 updates. But that would make the PC *more* advanced than the PS3, not the other way around. And I've seen no evidence in patch notes or announced plans that would indicate they've gone down that path.

Picked this back up and got from lvl 7 to 11 (I got a character up to 7 last year). Took a bit to remember how to do combat but it was fun. Beat up Bane anyway!

I have a lifetime sub, but haven't played in months. Thinking about firing it up and starting a new toon as breaks to D3 and PnP. Although as you know PnP has serious hooks in me. Really enjoying working maps and prepping modules etc... Not enough time in the day.

My brother just gifted me the DLC pack from this on Steam. I will have to make some time to give it another shot.

Yeah I picked it up myself. For F2P game, I didn't mind spending $6.80 to play for a week or 2.

It's fun but I get tired of playing solo!

I have a lifetime, but haven't played in ages.

Me too.

Is anyone here still playing this? Now that it's gone Free to Play I've been trying it out more and finally managed to fix a lot of the issues I had previously..

Haven't touched it in a while. Probably the most fun MMO I played though. Action-y combat with a gamepad is a lot more enjoyable than the slower 1-2-3-1-4-1, push-button stuff that most MMOs have stuck to over the years.

And the cameos by the comic heroes are pretty awesome.

Really should get back to it, but when I measure the pile vs MMOs, I generally choose the pile.

I haven't played in about a year, but I basically spent 2011 completely addicted to it. I'll probably go back and try it out again when I get tired of GW2. They're adding player bases in the next DLC.

My one disappointment with the game was that there was no natural power set for tanks. If they ever add that, I'll be back in a heartbeat.

I have a couple of level 30 heros and a villian that can access all the DUO content. Incase anyone was looking to do duo stuff etc. My nature hero is GreenBeanDemon so just send me a mail in game or post.

Surprisingly, I am still playing this game a lot and have bought all the DLC. Not sure why it's sticking with me so well this time around.

Anyway, I have a number of Heros:
Valmorian
Mighty Samson
ElectroVolt
Mystic Scarab

I'm still trying to decide what to do for a villain, but want to see that stuff too.

I presume we have no league set up though.

We do have a league, but it was dead when I was playing last year.

My experience was there wasn't very much at all unique to villain that I hadn't seen as a hero. Just playing a different side or story to the same quest. I'm sort of envious of those still getting mileage out of the game. I had a blast, loved leveling up so fast, and then suddenly found level 30 was unplayable with my build, and no opportunity to respec the fundamental power set and weapon set.

You can't change the power set unless you spend Station Cash (though I haven't found any powersets that are completely useless.. though I didn't really play a ton before they revamped Gadgets and Mental), but you can easily respec to use a different weapon.
