Did you disable/throttle the upload? The downloader is peer-to-peer, but doesn't do a good job of telling you that. A couple pages back someone posted exactly where to go to change the upload limit.

I found a static download through the web site forums. It was so much better, but I wasn't super fast, but it was so much better than 20kb/s.

I just had a hunt where I killed 1330 lbs worth of mule deer. Six total. I think the only thing I exceeded my other totals on was range. Here's that small deer:

Score: 59.449

Weight: 81.873 kg (180.5 lbs)
Time of Harvest: Feb 11 2012 19:28
Shots Hit: 1
Shot Distance: 134.350 m (440.8 ft)
Weapons Used: .243 Bolt Action Rifle (Wood)

I had two times where I had two deer on the ground at the same time. They were everywhere.

I shot a doe at 438 feet tonight. It looked like a few pixels in my scope. I have no idea how someone hit one from further away!

Big monitors help. I think it probably puts me in about 5th place or something, so people are definitely doing better.

I kind of wish this game had ballistics to where you had to adjust your shot for bullet drop(like Battlefield), or adjust your scope to compensate

If I can't find them good, I can at least shoot them from afar:

I really have a hard time telling how good a score a buck will get. Weight doesn't seem to matter that much, and I've seen some with a huge set of antlers that score very low.

Does the shot distance count for anything? Or is the score completely determined by antlers and weight?

Gimpy_Butzke wrote:

Buck score is purely derived from the antlers. If you click on the score number in the hunt statistics table, it will take you to the official scoring sheet that explains the whole score breakdown to the last thousandth of a point. The two key parts are: the number of "branches" on the antlers, and the symmetry between the left and right antler.

There are also a handful of 'bad' branches, which detract from the score if they exist. I don't know why those branches are seen as bad, I haven't looked it up.

No worthwhile improvements on my scores in the last few hunts. A point here or there, but nothing worth reporting.
I didn't get a chance to hunt this weekend to see if I could get a last-minute super-rack... but looking at the scores on the board I may as well have bought a lottery ticket! No snow day for me, so I'll be watching from my desk to see if we have any last minute upsets.
Go hunt!

Hooray! What did I win?

$10 Amazon.com Gift Card. PM me your e-mail.

Since I can't shop for most things I'd want on Amazon.com, I can't really use the gift card. So, unless karmajay wants to trade me his super awesome sniper pin (that would look snazzy on my hunting hat), you guys may pass my Amazon card to the next deserving person.

Congrats to the winners.

I think during this, I spent supposedly 30 hours with this. Don't know if that's true or not, but surprising.

EDIT: I think I figured it out. When you pause and minimize the game, it still keeps the clock ticking. My last hunt shows well over 4 hours long, when in reality, I started it, then paused/minimized and watched a couple of hours of TV with the family, only to finish it later. Maybe 1.5-2 hours of actual in game time.

My 9 year old step daughter loves to watch me play this. She likes pointing out the deer. Probably part of the reason why I played that much.

So close to having the second best everything!

Congrats karmajay! PM me your info and your choice of gift card or spiffy pin.

i don't have the opportunity to wear a pin so if MoonDragon wants the pin I'll just take the gift card, thanks!

Also, thanks for the contest! Lately, I've found that I have so may games these competitions (this and the minecraft survival one we recently did) really give me time to focus on a game. Let's do it again or a variation of!

Congratulations winners!

PM sent to you and karma both.

Congrats to the winners. We should do this again before summer time hits.

Thanks guys. And thank you Camniponent for organizing the whole thing.

But you took down the prize info too soon. I didn't even bother looking who was offering the prize(s). So now I don't know who was supposed to be offering the ranged shot prize. In any case, if they could contact karmajay, that would be fantastic! Thanks so much to everybody, again.

Oops. Rabbit's on the hook for that one!

Congrats to all, and it was fun to resurrect this.

Would have never played this if it wasn't for you plugging this in the CCs time and time again, rabbit. Thanks!

I had a lot of fun, thanks to everyone for their participation and coordination. I put in quite a bit of hunting time this weekend, but was not able to increase the quality of any of my kills.

I actually gave up on our hunt this Sunday, moving on to a territory in which I could stalk some bigger game.

My only valid weapon, however, was the bow, so I took that out for a spin. I had to get pretty close, because I was still unable to properly judge drop off and distance, but I succeeded in getting two deer.

Some thoughts on the bow: The biggest con, of course, is the rapid drop-off that gives it such poor range. I assume that the crossbow mitigates this, at the cost of fire rate.
Another con is that it has fairly low penetration, it seems very unlikely that you will bring an animal down instantly.

However it has two equally great pros. The first is it's silence. It makes a nice thunk sound when you fire it, but I don't think that the animals can hear that. I missed three times at a doe before hitting, and while the animal was certainly close enough to hear the thunk of the firing bow, and in real life would probably notice the arrows hitting the ground nearby, or whizzing overhead, there was no response at all.
Second seems to be the fact that the bleeding never seems to stop, which makes sense for an animal with a stick pointing out of it running through undergrowth. With bullets the animals only ever seem to leave four or so blood splatters, and then either bleed out or remain alive. When tracking my two deer I would come across occasional blood splatters long after the initial shot, and then eventually each of the dead deer themselves.

The arrow will most definitely bleed out more than a bullet, but I have seen blood spatter from a bullet show up long after the initial hit when tracking an animal I hit but not fatally.

I have managed to drop at least 1 or 2 hogs instantly with a bow. It certainly is much tougher to get animals to drop instantly but it is possible. As you become more stable with the bow you should find you can do it as well.

I find the trick with the bow is in lining up your shot immediately after drawing back. The longer you hold the draw the weaker the shot gets, and you will actually notice that if you hold that draw for to long your aim will start to dip as you lose strength.

Woohoo! What fun. Hat tip to Dead End Thrills, I guess, for the pics that got me interested again.

So... What do you mean there's no gravity effect/bullet drop at range? That would explain why I was missing so much.

TheWanderer wrote:

I haven't noticed one with the guns. I haven't done any real life shooting past 40 feet, so I have no idea if there is noticeable falloff after 500+ feet in real life or not.

Speaking of distance shots, I picked up the .30-06 lever action rifle so that I could do some better large game shooting. I took down some elk, and then returned to the main island to go on an indiscriminate rampage rampage to up my stats. I took out 8 mule deer and four other creatures. The one I'm proud of is the following:

Coyote (F)40.371
Weight: 18.312 kg (40.4 lbs)
Time of Harvest: Feb 13 2012 19:22
Shots Hit: 1
Shot Distance: 220.850 m (724.6 ft)
Weapons Used: .30-06 Lever Action Rifle

It was an accurate shot too, right in the chest, dropped her instantly.
