Tribes: Ascend Catch All

One thing to bear in mind is that unlike a AAA beta things are very much rough and changing in the Tribes beta. For instance the most recent patch broke skiing a little bit and occasionally kills your momentum on a smooth looking uphill slope. It's something I've had to get used to.

And some of the maps are functional, but probably not really dressed up with final detail.

EDIT: These are horrid TDM spawns. Let's just spawn enemies one right behind the other. I've been on both sides of spawning in and having somebody that's just barely starting to move from the same spawn point right in front, which generally results in a spinfusor to somebody's back. I've gotten to where I spawn and immediately look behind me because a lot of times, there's somebody there. That's actually worked out in my favor a time or two.

I haven't put a lot of time into TDM, but when I did play that mode I definitely remember a lot of bad spawns. I think I might spend some of my remaining XP on the MIRV launcher, that thing seems mighty useful.

I'm curious, how is everyone liking this after the latest update and three of the classes merging I into other similar classes.

Fine except the guns seem very, very expensive relative to other upgrades.

It does seem a bit ridiculous that some of the guns cost twice the unlock cost of the class that's equipping the gun. I wonder if it's because they are trying to get people to really master a specific style of play, because it's a new system and they're still trying to figure out the best way for then to implement it, or because locking those extra options down behind is part of their business plan.

I had to use nearly seven levels worth of points to buy a spinfusor for the Soldier. You know, the gun that the class had originally before this patch?

As discussed above, it pushed me back from actually buying the pack. Left a really bad taste in my mouth, and gives that "pay to win" feeling that F2P games should avoid.

Another patch today, and thankfully, it adjusts gun prices down.

I have virtually no interest in CTF, but have played the crap out of TDM. I know purests probably would hate me.

And new class suits! I've wanted a differentiation between the classes since I started playing. Friends list, and other UI, changes. Man, I just love all the work they're putting into this game. Such fast turn-around, I wish all MP games were like this. I still remember it use to take months, if not half a year to get any meaningful updates to CS:S. Even for the somewhat recent TF2, I'd take them months as well.

I have enjoyed TDM, but yeah, I mainly play CTF even though it's a bit difficult to get team cohesion in this game unless a great number work well together and, ideally, are communicating. That's the way it seems to me, at least.

It might be different if we had enough GWJ people in vent or something, but I've never truly enjoyed pub CTF game types in any game. And TDM is pretty fun on it's own, especially with the flag mechanic.

Haven't played as much Rabbit.

I really should, as I've no doubt I'll get better at skiing, which still gives me plenty of issues. I've been playing Infiltrator, Juggernaut, and Sentinel lately. I do kind of miss moving and shooting that my Jumper main allowed.

Found another good update.

Players should now receive XP at the end of a match even if they are offline when the match ends.

For those of us with a less-than-great connection, that's a godsend, honestly. Also good if RL needs your attention. I try not to let that happen though.

I'm really impressed with Hi-Rez's turnaround time and taking feedback into account; especially in the UI department as we've all experienced UI travesties hitting the PC.

Boo. Some guns still cost 42,000. So stupid that guns cost more than multiple class unlocks.

I'm totally ok with 42,000. The guns are one way to define yourself in the game, and they shouldn't be too cheap. 170,000 was obviously overkill but 42k will allow you to have all the (current) guns after a 30 day booster and 7 or 8 hours a week play time.

I was level 7 and only had 31,000 XP. So to get a gun, I'd have had to not upgrade ANYTHING for all that play time.

Playing 10 minute TDM games, I was earning maybe 300 points per game on average.

Silly high costs IMO, when whole classes cost 18,000 (which IMO is reasonable).

I'm back in the camp of not nearly as likely to buy the beta pack. If I got a better feeling of things being obtainable after spending a bit of money, I'd buy the pack for TA.

Just irritates me. Might just get Gotham City Imposters or something.

Hmm I haven't played much TDM because CTF is my mode of choice, but I earn between 1000k and 1500k per win, and about 400-500 if I join in half way. Did you buy in at all Mannish? It might be that I'm still earning VIP XP which makes this whole situation more tolerable. I've basically unlocked everything that I use (3 full classes) and still have half a million XP and all 6000 gold from the starter pack. Just hit level 20 as well. I wish there was a place I could see my total time played stats, I'm fairly sure it'll be embarassing...

I think once you buy anything you are VIP, and you will always get double XP. But it would still take 42 games at 1000XP to get one gun. I maybe play 5 rounds an hour in TDM, and would really only be getting maybe 500XP as a VIP. So it would take me 80 rounds to get a gun.

TDM probably has shorter rounds than CTF, so XP will be lower per round. Not sure how it would be per minute vs CTF.

Some guns still cost 100k it seems as well. Definitely a long way to go for Free to players.

While on the booster I was often getting around 4200XP per match, but that was on the token system. Not sure what the conversion is now with people on the booster.

Quick tip. If you find yourself getting stuck in the menus due to some weird bug, hit "M" to get yourself out of it.

When I looked earlier, M on the keyboard did nothing, but if I clicked on the M on screen, it would do what it was supposed to. Figured it was a bug.

The menus are in worse shape for me. If I go and change a key bind in game, it will not let me back out at all and get back into the game. Esc doesn't do it, clicking on the esc at the bottom doesn't. Even "exit match" takes me to a recover password screen. Had to kill the game.

I like the changes they've made to the UI quite a bit and them being willing to overhaul and improve things based on feedback (friends list, getting into matches quicker, better class UI in game) and I'm really loving the new skins for classes as they are both striking and visually distinctive enough that they'll be more easily read.

I haven't played any Rabbit or TDM, but a post on the forum by a HiRez employee revealed that XP is time based + bonuses for performance and winning and it's correct that those shorter modes will have smaller XP rewards.

With as much as is changing further price changes on weapons wouldn't surprise me in the least. When it comes to buying into the beta it was all about how much fun I was having. T:A is flat out the most fun I've had in an MP FPS in a long, long time.

I'm assuming they're going to go with the high-priced new, rapidly declining in price as new content is unveiled model. Which would work perfectly... if we had more content.

The only real complaint I have about the new patch is it seems to have turned up a crop of people who won't shut up when they're playing and are impolite, uncivilized, and crude. In a quick 5-1 victory I had 8 kills, 3 mid airs (blue plate special, mmm), and a flag cap and the other team was blaming the game itself for them getting rolled.

Other than that my playtime is yielding serious results with my spinfusor abilities and I've started to like running interference on the enemy flag/around their base. I would like to see 100% inheritance for projectiles, however.

Don't go to the beta forums. Seriously, worse than WoW PvP forums, it's terrible.

...I may know from experience trying to be the rational one. It's slipping, just a bit.

Pathfinder is my favored class so far. Mostly chasing and running interference for our carriers. And taking down tanks. +Armor Pierce on the spinfusor is maybe a bit much. It is, however, awesomely fun to dance around a tank like a demented grasshopper and rip it apart one blue disc at a time.

I find the game imminently more playable once I cut down the voice audio. That makes it much easier to ignore the whole chat box.

I've been playing this a bit lately as TOR loosens its hold on me. Not surprisingly, I am not as good as I was when playing the original Tribes back in my college days. However, if you guys are interested in getting on Mumble/Vent some night and playing some matches, I'll try and be there. Every team needs someone ranked last on the list, right?

Absolutely, we need to get a weekly time going. TF2 has Mon and Fri, and I think BF is still on Thurs. What do you guys think about Tuesday 9 EST?

That sounds good for me, though I may not be able to stick around for long.

I did have SignusX pop into a few games with me today, though, so that was cool.

Tuesday works for me! I'm on as Helioskannon, if you lot wanted to friend me up. It's the main game I'm playing at the moment.

silentsod wrote:

Yeah...it was pretty cool. I never noticed that your friends show as green (instead of blue). I would still like it if they added the option to join your friend's team when joining their match.
