The Binding of Isaac

I could be entirely wrong about this, but I think that you always get to Sheol by beating Mom's heart/fetus

The first 9 times I beat mom's heart all I got was the chest and only once I got a Satan room with a door below

Here's a helpful tip: Chocolate Milk and Brimstone do not mix well. I think it's a bug, but picking up Brimstone after you've got Chocolate Milk significantly reduces the damage from Brimstone, to the point where it takes two or three full hits to kill most monsters. It does allow insta-firing of the Brimstone beam, but the damage is so low compared to either alone that it's just not worth it.

I think that's intentional, due to the higher firing rate.

I think it was mentioned before, but Sheol permanently unlocks once you get 10 kills. I think if you've got ? you've already killed Mom 10 times.

Ah, awesome.

3 posts above you *cough*

I got my blue baby run done tonight, so that's it for beating the game with all the characters.
I still haven't gotten Golden God yet, so I must need to finish my item collection. Obviously I'm missing Forget Me Now and hopefully that will spawn soon. Apparently though I've never seen The Wafer. Anyone have tips on how to increase my chances of it dropping? My initial impulse is just to play as Isaac + D6 and respawn items as much as possible until they both drop.

One theory I've read is that certain items appear more commonly for certain characters. So since the Wafer is a kind of holy/Christian item it may appear more commonly for Maggy. I know it can definitely appear in shops so be sure to always check the item shop if you have enough money to buy it.

That would have been my suggestion.

Apparently I didn't need The Wafer for Golden God. Forget Me Now dropped and after that run "GOLDEN GOD"!

Golden God was in the original release and all the Sheol stuff came later, so you don't really need 100% to get the achievement. Maybe they'll patch in a new version? Platinum God?

Golden God actually wasn't unlockable until the Sheol update. Golden God broke because of the Christmas update which added the Lump of Coal.

Dr. Fetus + Mr. Mega + Transcendence = my first Sheol win with Isaac! It was surprisingly easy with that combo.

I didn't think I was going to bother beating Sheol with all the characters but I find the game so engaging that ever time I sit at the computer I have a go. Just got my blue baby sheol run left to.

As addicted as I am to this game, it's obvious I'm not very good or just not very lucky. I have died 56 times and still 0 mom kills!
I did finally get all the way to the fight with mom in my last play through, but I was low on health and died when she was at maybe 15% health left. I'll kill her eventually...

Once you get one, the rest seem to follow. Also there is a lot of luck involved.

Yeah, don't get discouraged. It's ok to die a lot. The important thing is to try to take away one thing you can improve on in each life.

Got my blue baby sheol run, all the collection items found and my Golden God 'cheevo! As I hadn't hit 100 deaths, I had to kill myself 12 times to get the Shears/Lost My Head achievement.

I think I died about 40 times before I got my first completion and then as Bogle says, it just kind of falls in to place. You've likely seen most of the room layouts and monsters, you'll have a good idea of what's a good upgrade path to aim for (brimstone is great, guppy is rubbish etc...), you'll have unlocked some of the better items.

Well I beat Mom for the first time. But I did it using the bible, so it was somewhat anti-climatic.

I'm sure you're all very impressed.

Let's see...something like 250 deaths and 20 mom kills and I am so close to Golden God but I can't for the life of me defeat Sheol with the blue baby. Oh how I wish the blue baby got the D6. It's gotten to the point where if I haven't acheived a certain amount of progress by the time I hit the depths I just quit because I know that I can get all the way to Sheol barely getting hit but Sheol will just own me unless I have a powerful character and I am tired of wasting time meticulously saving my blue hearts only to get bent over the barrel by brutal double boss spawns in Sheol.

I want to 100% this game so bad but Momma's Boy and Blue Baby Sheol run are really starting to frustrate me.

I've only done isaac and maggy sheol runs. Working on cain.

I recommend the Book of revelations and one or both of the batteries. I had way, way more than the 12 soul hearts the display will show when I got to Satan. By the time I finished off Satan I still had 12 soul hearts showing on the health counter, even after being hit many, many times in that fight.

Also the compass is essential (and the map is great). Once I'm in the womb and the lower levels I just go straight for the boss. There's no shop so there's no point in clearing out every room, the challenge room awards aren't worth the 3 hard waves etc...

Is that in general or just the blue baby? From what I've seen, the challenge rooms in the womb are just a mini-boss rush for a treasure room reward and I usually don't have much trouble with that. Maybe it's significantly harder once you unlock "Everything's Terrible"?

Oh, I didn't realize you had to beat Sheol with Blue Baby to get Golden God. Ouch. I still have Eve and Blue Baby Sheol runs to do then. With luck maybe I can do it before the expansion comes out. Anyone know when that is supposed to be, by the way? Day one purchase.

Also, Valve, where are my Binding of Isaac TF2 hattes? Huh? Huh?

The point or a Rogue-like isn't to win. It's to die in an interesting way.

For me, that's an 'in general' rule. A 3 mini-boss rush is still has a good chance of taking a heart (or more) off you and you can't really afford that once you're in the womb and below. The challenge room usually just has a chest or locked chest in it; so the reward available (keys, money) at that point in the game isn't worth risk of some damage; of course if it was something particularly good like an extra heart or the bible I might reassess. I say "at that point in the game" because once I'm in the womb I've usually wrung out the arcade, so I'm typically carrying 20+ keys and 30+ bombs.

Mostly though it's part of my strategy to go through as few rooms as possible to reach each bosses in the womb and sheol. My main reasoning is that the more time you spend in combat the more likely you are to take damage so you may as well take the quickest route possible. Also worth while if you have plenty of bombs in sheol, if you don't like a room or you don't think you can beat the mobs without taking too much damage then just bomb your exit door and leave. That works best if you have the compass and know the route to the boss.

Eve Down! Blue Baby Sheol to go.

While that would be awesome in so many ways, I suspect the sort of material they could use to make Isaac themed hattes in TF2 is probably not suited to the light-heartedness of TF2.

Although the Heavy with a coat-hanger through his head would be so very inappropriately hilarious.

Skatole or Mr. Mega would work.

Steam Sale price tag.

Woo Golden God! Finally was able to exploit Book of Rev + Battery+ Relic in same run. Demon Baby + Spider Bite was huge too, especially on bosses, because it meant I could slow everything. That lowered the effective difficulty quite a bit. Lucked out and found Poison Touch too, but probably didn't need it.

Never thought on purchase that I would eventually get 88 hours out of this game. Holy crap!
