Recommend me a (non-gaming) podcast

Started listening to the Savage Love Podcast recently. Don't know if it's been recommended here before, but it's funny, and the archives go all the way back to #1. It's basically a sex advice podcast, so not for mixed company unless that company is your partner.

Also have been listening to the Living After Faith podcast, which is about living life after you've left a religious faith to become atheist.

In the same vein, The Atheist Experience is often good listening if you want to sharpen your mental tools for arguing with the religious who are trying to convert you back, or just be entertained and/or frustrated. Their archive of MP3 podcasts is not very deep, though.

So in keeping with my practice of listening to podcasts at work that let me vicariously experience things that I'd rather be doing than working (hence why I listen to so many video game podcasts, including the GWJCC), I've been hunting around trying to find a couple of good poker podcasts.

So far the only two I've liked enough to check out a second episode are Ante Up and Top Pair. Don't suppose anyone could recommend any others?

I'm not really interested in in-depth coverage of poker as a "sport," which rules out most of the major ones. (I checked out ESPN's Poker Edge, which reminded me why I hate professional sports; something about that ultra-slick, high-octane style of sports reporting renders even something I have some level of interest in and enough context to understand into boring gobbledegook.)

Nor did I play poker online even back when you still could in the U.S., which rules out most of the others, which currently seem dedicated full-time to a bunch of whinging about the DoJ. (I get it, that sucks, and I really hope it all gets sorted out, but in the meantime I don't care.)

I really like Top Pair for its informal tone, decent production values, and focus on home games, poker etiquette, obscure rules adjudication, etc. I've only been playing for a little under a year, so that sort of thing is really useful to me. I also liked their recent interview with Barry Greenstein; I might not care much about poker as a sport, but some of the fellows who've been playing for decades and decades are really interesting characters and I love hearing their stories.

Ante Up I've been liking a little less since they tend to give more air time to stuff I don't care about, but I REALLY like their hand-of-the-week analysis. I'd love it if I could find a podcast dedicated to that kind of strategy talk without devolving into a bunch of incomprehensible jargon and numbers up the wazoo. (Not that there's not a place for that, but a podcast isn't really the best format to present it.)

Anyone else listen to poker podcasts at all?

Has The Flop House been mentioned here? If not, then you should listen to The Flop House. They watch crappy movies and talk about them. It's much better that How Did This Get Made which I recommended earlier in the thread.

Obviously not for all ages. The Sex Nerd Sandra Podcast is a new favorite of mine.

It is not just clinical, she often will have a comedian, writer on as a guest. For people looking to expand their sexual knowledge, it is a great place to get info.

I'll say it again, Radiolab is my favorite podcast time and again. I wish they did it more often, but it's got fairly high production values, so I understand why.

No! It's so precious precisely because it doesn't appear too often.

If you want more Radiolab... then just go and listen to back catalogue.

I took this UCRC's recommendation back in April this year and am now almost through the 110+ episodes (I have less than ten shows left to go) and it has been an awesome trip. I will miss it and most probably revisit several shows. Despite all the different topics they took on I never felt bored, they surely are able to engage you in whatever they are talking about.

Great, I've been planning on giving most of the catalogue re-listen for some time now.
Interestingly, when I first fell in love with Radiolab I was straight out of high school, thinking hard about what to do with my education. It might have just nudged me to risk picking mathematics over humanities (or at least gave me a lot more confidence in making that choice), showing that even hard science isn't all lab coats.
Now, with this year devoted to preparing for my first degree in applied maths it will be interesting to re-live all those shows from the new perspective.

Warren Ellis has started podcasting again. The first episode of the new podcast, Spektrmodule, can be streamed from his website or downloaded from itunes. If you've never heard his previous podcasts, he likes to make short 15-30 minute mixes of obscure/unknown/forgotten music built around a common theme, tone or idea. The most recent episode consists mostly of ambient electronic and jangly lo-fi rock interspersed with his own brief ramblings and bizarre trivia about fire axes on the space station and the sonic resonance of walls.

He is a very interesting character with excellent taste in music.

I could swear the risk works the other way around there.

The bad news? The Bugle got the chop-chop by The Times and will cease podcasting soon. There's talk of keeping it going under some sort of pay system, though. And I will gladly pay.

The good news? Season 3 of We're Alive kicks off on January 2, 2012.

As would I.

Anybody got any suggestions for a good series of language podcasts? I've got a relatively long commute, and I'd like to pick back up my German or Russian, or teach myself Italian.

Anch'io vorrei parlar' Italiano!

Great. It's been absent for too long.

Nice!

How was Season 2. I really enjoyed Season 1 but have so many podcasts to listen to, it kind of got lost.

It was very good. The characters spent a lot of Season 2 away from the apartment building and running into other groups of survivors, each of which had different ideas on how to cope with the zombies and rebuild civilization.

The weekly Motley Fool Money podcast is one of my must-listen podcasts. There's usually the host & 3 of the Fool's stock pickers and they go through a recap of the week's major news, a "main" story and then some stock ideas. It's very much in tune with the MF's usual principles & not a "go with the herd" mentality. I don't use it so much for specific investment ideas as for a general feel as to how these guys are approaching their decisions & a skeptic's view of the week's macro.

Whoo. Some new fun podcast:

Mike and Tom eat snacks very funny.

WTF with Marc Maron podcast

As recommended on iFanboy's all media blow out podcasts.

If you like improv you should check out improv4humans. It's Matt Besser's (of Upright Citizens Brigade) new podcast.

Thanks for the We're Alive recommendations. It's the first podcast my wife has been interested in listening to during our commute. It's provided a nice break from the laff-riot morning dj's zany antics.

The Risky Business podcast is back from a holiday break. A relatively short podcast about information and software security fails in the news and interviews with security researchers and company spokespeople. It's pretty awesome if you're into computer or network security.

Warning, there is a non-zero chance that if you download this in the clear you may be put on the FBI's watch list.

(Cross-posted from a shorter thread on the same topic.)

Not sure if I'm allowed to plug my own stuff, but I co-host a podcast with a friend of mine. It's called CY & J, and it's on iTunes and in blog form. We talk about games and poke fun at each other.

I'd also recommend My Brother, My Brother and Me - a podcast by the McElroy brothers (who many know from Joystiq in the case of Griffin and Justin, while Travis seems somewhat more absent from the gaming scene). Now, this is not a gaming podcast - it's actually an advice show, with a mix of questions from listeners/advice-seekers, and funny ones lifted off Yahoo by either the hosts or listeners. You can find it here.

[edit]: Forgot to say that MBMBaM is an incredibly funny show. Do not listen to it on public transport. I try to and I always have to turn it off because I'm laughing to myself with headphones on in public.

My brother, my brother and me - episode 87 snippet: "It was either Ghandi or Hitler who said, 'half of love is fear'."

Was the first time I listened to MBMBAM and after that episode, I permanently subscribed. I am not a laugh out loud guy, so kudos to them for managing that every 5 minutes.

They are consistently pretty good. I'm also starting to enjoy Stop Podcasting Yourself, which is on the same podcast network thing. It's much more low-key humor, but entertaining.

I'm going to plug Good Luck, Have Podcast. It's a show about two guys that were about to give up on online dating, and in a last ditch effort they pooled their resources together to make a joint okCupid profile. They advertise themselves as two guys looking for one girl for a serious, straight relationship. The show chronicles their adventures in finding the woman of their dreams, and somehow they actually get dates and stuff.

Spoilers!

Spoiler:

It's my show! Shameless plug!

Penn Jillette has recently started a podcast called Penn's Sunday School that I'm enjoying a lot.

For sure, it's very enjoyable. I've been working my way through from the first episode and it's a great listen.

New episode of You Look Nice Today last week.

Merlin Mann is about half my weekly podcast listening roster.

Wait. Has Roderick on the Line not been mentioned? It is my favorite ear thing.

Roderick on the Line is amazing. 24 episodes. Approximately one per week. A crazy raconteur musician and an internet nerd go on enormous storytelling voyages which are quite possibly entirely crap. http://www.merlinmann.com/roderick/

Some topics include:
Which method of shaving will or will not get you killed by the viet cong.
How to purchase a dead rubber girl and the many options possible in her entrances.
Pump chili.
I don't know what I saw, man, but it was like, out there.
Combat booted women, and the love thereof.
Being antisocially graduated.
And many, many ways in which you can improve your life by keeping moving, and getting out of the way.

That's a little ping pong. Maybe tone that down, Doak.

Here's the thing about ping pong...
