Final Fantasy XIII-2‽ Catch-All

You clearly missed out on the Dragon Age 2 thread good sir!

I joke because I love.

Or the Skyrim thread.

Maybe I really don't belong here. I liked that game, too.

I'm pretty tickled in particular by the song's weird "Chocobos of the Devil" theme.

"So cute, yet fierce, is he from hell?"

I might spend $5 to see how many times the singer laughed mid-recording.

I will admit that I'm listening to it again. Something like a car accident, but I'm finding I like the song. It's so absurdly over the top.

I've seen people complain (and praise) the Chocobo lady and how annoying she is. I'd like to have this song playing every time she's on screen. I think that'd be funny.

Oh. My. God.

I... uh...

I guess I hope the gameplay is good enough to overcome this, because I want so much to like this release.

For what it's worth, FFXIII was the first Final Fantasy I didn't like, and I've been sincerely hoping that FFXIII-2 will make up for it.

...at least a little.

Same here. Like Jeff Canatta says, "I love loving things!"

Sometimes things get a little negative here, particularly pre-release. It's the natural reaction to marketing overhype, I guess. Then the game comes out and the people playing it mute out the naysayers with honest impressions rather than jaded preconceptions. I think only one person has played XIII-2 so far, so give it some time. I fell off the XIII train at a point, so I'm playing wait-for-a-sale on the sequel.

...I just bought it from Amazon five minutes ago after starting to listen through the XIII soundtrack again this morning, courtesy if 4xis. It'll be here Friday.

I will gracefully bow out of this discussion by posting this leaked concept art from Final Fantasy XV:

I think she needs more belts.

Agreed. But a couple hours in, I like it although the quick time events could get annoying. There is certainly a lot more to do in this game.

That's what I'm hoping for. After reading some solid previews covering the additional gameplay content in this one, I caved and preordered about a week or so ago, and it's set to deliver to me Monday. So for good or ill, I'll find out firsthand.

I think what I'm most excited about is the Dragon Quest V element of recruiting and leveling up monsters to round out the part. I really want a Tonberry party member if that's possible.

The achievement list reveals some interesting things. Re: quicktime events, there's an achievement for passing four of them as boss finishers, and people who are a good way through the game are wondering when it's supposed to pop, so probably not that numerous.

Looks like there's a 90-point achievement (gold trophy) for doing just that, actually.

To be fair, the chocobo music has always been terrible, and the two chocobo cuts from the XIII soundtrack were by far the worst in the game. That's like pointing to a cereal commercial James Taylor wrote and deducing that he's a terrible musician.

The old chocobo bossa nova is perfectly serviceable, and a couple of its renditions are IMO quite charming. The earliest ones worked, in part, because they fit thematically with the chocobo mechanics (freedom from random encounters! Light! Breezy! Good contrast with world map music!).

Final Fantasy XV to feature dub-step chocobo rendition. Calling it now.

Hey, now, I was in that boat too. Also, the Chocobo theme is great...except for apparently XIII-2, and moogles rule. FFs IV through IX all have different virtues that qualify them for "Great" in my book. And I liked XII a helluvalot.

But I'm also waiting for a sale. XIII was a bit of a chore, and while the system was neat, I didn't properly grok it, so a lot of fights ended up being ugly slogs of attrition. The strange and great thing about FF, though, is each game is so distinct, if you don't like one, you just wait for the next one--however the talk from Square about XIII being the last proper FF makes that problematic.

Never again will I believe anyone who tells me a Final Fantasy game is 'good'.

Any more trolling, or have you got that all out of your system? Seriously - what's the point of posting here if you obviously don't care for the series? I don't go into threads about [Awesome game X] just to dump all over it without ever bothering to even play it.

EDIT: And he's already gone..... that'll teach me not to click refresh before posting something I wrote but forgot to submit 30m earlier.

Out of curiosity, do we know what the context is of that Chocobo theme?

First few hours impressions:

- Still love the paradigm shift battle system, it is by far the most fun battle system in any Final Fantasy game for me.
- I'm enjoying the new monster mechanic, It adds some variety, some spice, and the feral links are a nice touch.
- I actually enjoy the cinematic scenes, it helps keep me engaged, even if it is somewhat silly button pressing, it gives a bit of a "God of War" feel.
- Hooray Vendors
- Hooray Townspeople

People that didnt like XIII because of the linearity get their wish, and although I haven't encountered the ridiculous music choices people have been talking about, overall I am pleased.

That's encouraging Harry, and that's how I'm hoping I feel about the game.

Ya, I went into this reading reviews of things people liked and didn't like, and it seems to be very polarizing per person, so everyone is going to experience differently. I got the strat guide for it too, and skimming it, it seems the main story is quite short but I'm not sure. More than half of the book is related to 'tour guide' and side quests. But hey, we shall see.

I dunno, saw the "review" at Kotaku and it was basically... all good, but the music. Improved upon all the bad stuff I heard about XIII.

Not sure I would want to jump in having not played XIII. But then again I had already decided there was no way I was playing XIII. So maybe this might be worth picking up sometime, even if you didn't play XIII?

Then again I haven't played one since VII, on PC. Not having a PS1/2 I missed a lot there for a few years. Was kinda excited about finally rejoining the series until XIII reviews started coming out.

There were quite a few people on here who really liked XIII; you just have to look at our other preferences and figure out if they line up with yours, as well.

Sold! Where do I preorder.

wub-wub-WUBWUBWUB-KUPO!

Fool! Chocobos don't Kupo, they Wark!

Anyway, the bombcast is discussing Square's woes, and they mention that XIII-2 has no save points. I'm honestly not sure how I feel about that. My brain tells me "Good, they're stupid!" but my heart is a little sad, and remembers modest cleverness like the save point that runs away from you in FFVII (if memory serves), or the awesome moment in Xenogears when you enter the room full of save points and an NPC informs you "We use these things to spy on the surfacers, and monitor them." How silly am I being?

At the very least, they were a handy reminder that I should save.

Chrono Trigger had some trickery with save points too if I recall correctly. Yay lampshading!

Anyways, from what I saw in the demo, it's auto-save/checkpointing. Which is fine since there's less pausing and flow interruption, but I have to say that sometimes it's nice being able to manually manage your saves in case you're trying to do something risky.

Not to mention corrupted saves. Does nobody think this happens anymore?

In the case of these large RPG's, I prefer savepoints. I try to manage mine to make it possible to play back through specific sections of the game at a later time. This means I can't do that.

I got my copy of this, but it's still shrinkwrapped and will stay that way until I get through this stupid )@&%) thing I have to get done for work.

Yeah ME2 just had that kerfluffle on PS3 less than a year ago.

Minarchist wrote:

Last time I had a corrupted save it was when my GBA battery died while saving in Golden Sun. I'm still amazed that game had a corruption recovery tool built in.

PREGUNTA!

Should I buy the dlc? It's a weapon for Serah.

Good news: You can!

It seems that they took the branching timeline stuff from Radiant Historia, so you're able to reset specific sequences at will in order to replay them.

Also, if you want to have multiple saves, it's possible to do that as well. On the Timeline screen, hit X, and you can create additional saves.
