January 26, 2012 -- Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Counter-Strike, Half-Life, Left 4 Dead, Portal, and Team Fortress) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced the beta release of the Steam application for iOS and Android devices.

With the Steam app, gamers around the world may chat with Steam friends, browse community groups and user profiles, view screenshots and user-generated content for their favorite games, read the latest gaming news, stay up to date on unbeatable Steam sales, and more.

"The Steam app comes from many direct requests from our customers," said Gabe Newell, co-founder and president of Valve. "Seeing which of your friends are online and playing a game, sending quick messages, looking at screenshots for an upcoming game, or catching a sale - these are all features customers have requested. Mobile is changing way people interact, play games and consume media, and the Steam app is part of our commitment to meet customer demands and expand the service functionality of Steam to make it richer and more accessible for everyone."

Those who wish to join the beta just need to download the Steam app (free of charge) and log in to their Steam account via the mobile app to express interest in the beta. Gamers will be added to the Closed Beta as the service ramps up.

Steam is a leading platform for the delivery and management of PC and Mac games with over 40 million accounts around the world and over 1,800 titles offered.

My God.

Woah.

EDIT: Wow, you can order from your phone? Sweet, no more having to deal with the website on mobile safari

Good luck with that on the iPhone version. Its against the Appstore rules. Its the reason Amazon can no longer sell kindle books through the Kindle app and the XBox live app doesn't have access to the market place.

Sha-zam.

I did not see that coming.

But I can still buy physical products through the Amazon app... I think (haven't check in a while)

Thank goodness. I remember always wondering why they didn't have an app during the Christmas sale.

I'm looking up on it now. I'm pretty sure for any data purchases like MP3s, games, and books Apple requires an in-app purchase ability which gives apple a 30% cut.

I wonder if it will let you set group alerts as push notices. That would be pretty neat.

Client downloaded - commence begging for beta invite. I hold out hope that TF2 hattes will somehow be involved.

Or a phone specific accessory like the earbuds :O

So its unclear whether it is just about content that is usable on the phone versus content that requires another device (Steams case). I'm not counting on it though. Link.

Steam: Here's a new game to preorder!
Us: Meh.
Steam: It comes with a free TF2 hat.
Us: TAKE MY MONEYS.

About time!

Here's hoping...

Edit: Although since in no part of the description does it say something like "purchase games that automatically start downloading in your Steam client on your PC", I'm guessing not.

I'm broke.

My wife says we are always broke. Smart woman that wife.

Hurray! This is pretty sweet. Won't be buying anything using it if Apple takes a cut, but the app will be useful for chatting on the go if I'm desperate.

Well, I signed up, but didn't get in. Does say that they have "made note of your account".

On a bonus, Steamguard is awesome.

WE CANNOT ESCAPE!

Any bets on how long it will be before they sell Android games directly?

A year is my guess.

Pretty sure that won't work. I've ordered stuff from my office and it doesn't start downloading immediately. The exception being DLC. That will start downloading once the client knows you're authorized.

They've figured us out! /skyisfalling

Weird, tried to look up the app from my iPhone, and nothing was found.

Is it US only app?

Well, you know what I mean. You buy the game in the app and it's ready to start downloading or install or whatever when you get to your computer.

I can tell you it's not US only. I couldn't find it in the store either, so I just followed the link in the OP.

did that, opened in Safari, and got directly to it. It worked.

That's how I imagine it working, yes.

Well, damn. Now I'm going to have to fix my Android's screen.

I don't know if the search is case sensitive or not, but I finally found it by typing Steam Mobile in the search and it was down the list of apps quite a ways.

I tried logging in but it gives me an error : /

Typing "Steam Valve", it's about (aboot for our Canadian friends) 10th place or so.

Whoa. Wait for donut to actually use this to keep in touch while she's at the office.

:edit:
This would've been awesome for the XMas sale.
