NFL 2011 Conference Championship Round

You (and Meatman) don't dig the rematch angle? The Pats seeking revenge after the Giants ruined their perfect season? The Helmet Catch?

That was the most memorable Super Bowl since Kurt Warner and the Rams winning imho.

EDIT: And also the angle where if Eli wins, he has more than Peyton? Love that angle!

For the Pats and their fans, yeah, there's definitely the rematch angle. I was just speaking quite personally, as I don't really like the Pats or the Giants.

At least we get the two best QB's from today's games in the Super Bowl. Otherwise, it would have been a battle of the mediocres.

Wait? The Pats lost that one?

So enjoyed sitting through a concert for my wife's favorite musician, surreptitiously checking my phone for the score every 45 seconds or so. No, didn't mind missing that second game AT ALL.

Looking forward to the big rematch; I wanted the 49ers in just because I figure that franchise needs success after all these years, but Giants-Patriots was the best possible matchup for a bunch of reasons. Should be fun. I would like to formally beg the Giants to make David Tyree an honorary captain that day.

That part interests me. Especially when Eli had that interview about being "elite" back at the start of the season.

I know not of this interview. What can you tell me?

You're serious? All they talked about for weeks of training camp and pre-season...

Here's a CNN article from this week, which recounts the story...

Of course not. He answered the question the way any proud athlete, with a Super Bowl MVP on his fireplace mantle, would:

"I consider myself in that class," he told 1050 ESPN in New York during training camp, back in August. "Tom Brady is a great quarterback, he's a great player and what you've seen with him is he's gotten better every year. He started off winning championships and I think he's a better quarterback now than what he was, in all honesty, when he was winning those championships.

"I think now he's grown up and gotten better every year and that's what I'm trying to do," he said. "I kind of hope these next seven years of my quarterback days are my best."

It was hardly controversial stuff. But because it came from Eli Manning, who goes out of his way to be bland during interviews, it was back page stuff for the New York tabloids. And because he put himself in the elite category of NFL quarterbacks, it became a story that lingered on sports radio for weeks.

Either way the NFL wins. The only better scenario is a Manning vs Manning SB

Kyle Williams' twitter account is getting smashed by a lotdisgusting 49rs fans. Seriously some of these people.... No one deservs that.

In deference, that's not 49ers fans, that's sports fans in general. Still, I felt awful for that kid, absolutely awful, and i'm THRILLED the Giants won. It's too bad this weekend will be remembered more for the Goats (Evans, Cundiff, Williams) than for anything else.

Oh no! Yesterday wasn't a dream

What was wrong with Tom Brady on Sunday? That's about as bad as I've seen him play in a long while.

In news that is effectively irrelevant for everyone except me (i.e., Bucs news), it was rumored last night that Oregon's Chip Kelly was about to accept the head coaching job in Tampa, and it's now reported he's backed out. I am reasonably elated; the track record of college coaches heading to the pros is less than stellar, and the kind of offense Oregon runs is not something that works really well in college. Something about it screamed "STEVE SPURRIER REDUX".

He got better in the second half. I don't know why he was floating all those balls in the first half of the game ... or flat out missing people.

But, really, I think it was because the Ravens dropped so many people into coverage. The Pats use so many crossing routes and picks in their passing game, but I don't think the Ravens were biting. Plus, as the talking heads pointed out, they were in nickel almost the entire game.

Lord knows it wasn't because of the pass rush.

At least Legion hasnt posted a picture of Pieface celebrating yet....

1) I won't label Evans a goat, that was a good defensive play to knock the ball out as he was trying to secure the football. Cundiff does need to make that kick.

2) No play deserves the crap that Cundiff and Williams are getting. I am very passionate about my teams (as you probably gather), but in the end, I know that even if the Giants win the Super Bowl, I'm still the same schmuck I've always been, my life doesn't change. (Then again, being a Giants fan in my Princeton office makes me a rock star, I'm getting high praises from all the Eagles and Cowboys fans of the office, we are all very cordial to each other, with a little trash talking sprinkled in). After the whole Brian Stow incident, I was hoping that people would realize that sports shouldn't be taken to the point where someone's life was endangered, but then you have the Flyers/Rangers incident after the Winter Classic. I remember at a Jets/Browns game, some drunk Browns fan tackled some dude in a Jets jersey, only to turn out it was a 13 year old kid who was on the tall side. There's really that 2% of fans that takes these games way too seriously, and ruins it for the other 98%. When I travel to a visiting stadium, I wear gear for the teams I root for, I celebrate big plays, and try not to do it to the point where I appear to be provoking the home crowd. Anyone who does that deserves to get their ass beat. At home or away games, I try to respect other people and the teams they root for, and I expect the same is done for me.

*puke*

wont be watching the SB this year.

What I want is an animated .gif of the little dance Manning did at the end of the first half (I think it was) when he went up to the line and couldn't decide whether he had time to start the play or take a timeout. Comedy gold, that was.

Isn't it time for a "The Big Game" thread?

TL,DR: People shouldn't be so dopey about this stuff.

Grats to your Giants. I can't believe this is the same team that went 4-5 in November and December.

Well F-it.

Maybe I can talk to the wife into playing scrabble on the 5th. I do not believe I could find a matchup I would have less interest in watching. Seriously, is there a way they can both lose?

Thx. They play sh*tty in Dec, but show up in January.

Fun Super Bowl facts:

Aside from SB I, only 3 Super Bowl have featured 2 teams that have never played in a Super Bowl prior
-SB III, Jets vs Colts
-SB XVI, 49ers vs Bengals
-SB XX, Bears vs Patriots

Giants/Patriots will be the 5th time there has been a Super Bowl rematch. 3 of the 4 times, the same team won Part II.
-Dallas vs Pittsburgh (Pitt won Parts I and II, but wiffed on Part III)
-Miami vs Washington (Washington got revenge on Part II)
-San Francisco vs Cincinnati
-Dallas vs Buffalo

49ers are the only team that have stayed undefeated through multiple Super Bowls (5-0)

Joe Gibbs is the only head coach to win 3 Super Bowls with 3 different QBs:
-Joe Theisman
-Doug Williams
-Mark Rypien

Dallas and Pittsburgh have been to the most SBs (8), but the Steelers have the most rings (6).

Tom Brady is the only QB to appear in 5 Super Bowls............................imagine if the Jets never obliterated Drew Bledsoe?

*EDIT*
Only 2 Super Bowls have been played without Cheerleaders:
-Super Bowl II: Green Bay vs Oakland
-Super Bowl XLV: Green Bay vs Pittsburgh (last year)

I never noticed that. Interesting! Do we know why?

In the case of the last Super Bowl apparently it was just a fluke relating to the fact that neither team actually uses cheerleaders at all.

The sucky part is we're 5-8 in NFC Championship games now. Just think... we could have 13 Super Bowls.

At the risk of being a filthy skimmer, I laughed out loud after the Giants game. During one of the replays, the Fox cameras went tight on the face of the Giants punter/holder right after the game-winning FG. He was running down the field, helmet off and (in slow motion) yelling "WE'RE GOING TO THE F*****G SUPER BOWL."

Lip reading FTW.
